Failed the CPC Exam? Retake Terms and a Focused Study Plan
Check whether your CPC purchase includes another attempt, understand when scheduling becomes available, and turn weak-area feedback into a focused retake study plan.
Short answer
After failing the CPC exam, check your original purchase: AAPC says retake options depend on the voucher or promotion you bought. If another attempt is included, it becomes available after the first attempt is processed; otherwise, you need another voucher. Use the reported weak areas and fresh practice to decide what to change before scheduling again.
Is another attempt already included in your purchase?
After failing the CPC exam, check your original purchase before buying another attempt. AAPC's retake policy says your options depend on the exam voucher or promotion you purchased, so a free second attempt is not included with every purchase.
The AAPC retake FAQ, checked November 3, 2026, separates included attempts from purchases that require a new voucher. Use your receipt and original terms to choose the next action:
| What your purchase shows | What to do next |
|---|---|
| An unused additional attempt is included | Check its conditions and expiry, then wait for the first attempt to be processed |
| No additional attempt remains | Review the current terms and price before purchasing another voucher |
| A promotion or Unlimited Exam Attempts product | Use that product's original terms; do not assume standard-voucher rules describe it |
| A technical problem affected the attempt | Contact AAPC for review; a replacement attempt is not automatic |
AAPC's Exam Agreement, checked November 3, 2026, says exam fees must be used within one year of purchase and are nonrefundable and nontransferable. Check the expiry attached to your purchase before choosing a study deadline. Do not assume failing an attempt starts a new purchase window.
Write down the purchase date, remaining attempts, expiry and any promotion conditions. If you need another voucher, the CPC cost-planning guide helps you separate the exam charge from books and other preparation costs. Verify the current price before paying.
When can you see and schedule the next attempt?
AAPC's scheduling and retake guidance, checked November 3, 2026, says an included retake becomes available after the first attempt has been processed. An absent retake button immediately after testing does not establish that you must buy again.
AAPC lists a results window of 7–10 business days on its CPC exam page. That is a results expectation, not a universal mandatory retake waiting period or a promise that a particular appointment will be available.
Follow this sequence:
- Check the processed result and voucher. Look in your AAPC account for the result, remaining attempt and available retake option.
- Resolve missing eligibility before paying again. Allow processing, check the expiry and purchase conditions, and contact AAPC if the included attempt still does not appear.
- Complete the appointment booking. Follow the account's scheduling path to Meazure Learning, use the Notice to Schedule credentials as directed, and choose an available format, date, time and location where applicable.
- Keep the confirmation. Redeeming a voucher does not itself schedule an appointment; complete the booking and check the confirmation details.
If your new appointment crosses into another calendar year, recheck the code year before continuing with the same resources. Under AAPC's current U.S. policy, checked November 3, 2026, exams update annually on January 1. The CPC book and code-year explanation covers that decision. For a 2027 retake, confirm the applicable rules again before booking or buying books.
How should you turn the score report into priorities?
AAPC says candidates who fail receive the areas in which their subscores were at or below 65%. Those areas are a starting list for review. The overall CPC passing requirement is 70 correct answers out of 100; the weak-area reporting threshold is not a separate passing standard for each section.
Use the CPC section map to match each reported area to the material you need to revisit. For more detail on interpreting the result itself, see CPC passing scores and results.
Then test the likely cause with fresh study questions. As an editorial method, classify each practice mistake by what you need to change:
| Practice mistake | What to record | Next study action |
|---|---|---|
| You did not know the relevant rule | The rule and where you verified it | Review the rule, then apply it to a different practice example |
| You knew the rule but could not find the reference efficiently | Where the lookup stalled | Repeat the navigation with new examples |
| You overlooked a detail in the practice record | The detail you missed | Restate the task before comparing answer choices |
| You spent too long on one item | What kept you from moving on | Rehearse moving past difficult items and returning later |
Keep this log about practice work and general skills. Do not reconstruct protected exam questions; AAPC's agreement prohibits reproducing exam content and putting copied practice or exam questions in code-book notes.
For review organized by subject, full CPC prep planned for launch includes 1,100 questions across 18 sections. Start now with the material you already have and the specific problems your log identifies.
What should you change in the next study block?
Use a short review cycle that produces evidence of improvement. The sequence below is editorial advice, not an AAPC requirement or a promise that a set number of study days will be enough.
Start with a fresh baseline. Work a small set without checking answers as you go. The 20 free CPC practice questions can provide a starting exercise. Record the result and the reason for each miss; a short set does not establish readiness across the whole exam.
Repair one recurring problem. Choose a reported weak area and work through its relevant reference instructions. If your issue is lookup speed, practice locating the information. If it is misunderstanding a rule, slow down enough to explain the rule before adding time pressure.
Check transfer to different questions. Return to that topic using fresh examples. A correct answer you remember from yesterday tells you less about applying a rule to a new record. Keep occasional mixed practice in the cycle so that attention to one weak area does not become your entire review.
For example, suppose your hypothetical log shows that you can explain a rule correctly after a practice set but repeatedly run out of time locating its instructions. Make the next block a navigation exercise, then try a timed mixed set. If you still choose the wrong rule without time pressure, return to the underlying lesson instead.
Put these blocks into the free CPC study plan. For recall work alongside reference practice, full CPC prep planned for launch includes 540 flashcards. Decide which problem the next session should address before opening another set.
When is another timed rehearsal useful before booking?
A timed rehearsal is useful once you have changed something measurable: fewer repeated rule errors, more reliable lookups or a better habit of moving on from difficult questions. It should test the revised approach rather than repeat the previous study routine unchanged.
The official CPC format, checked November 3, 2026, is 100 multiple-choice questions in one four-hour sitting. That gives an average of 2 minutes 24 seconds per question, not a separate limit on every item. AAPC recommends answering every question and leaving difficult ones for later. Use the CPC time-management guide to rehearse that approach.
For a full-length practice set, full CPC prep planned for launch includes a 100-question mock exam. Treat any practice result as feedback about that rehearsal, not a guaranteed result on the next exam.
Before confirming a retake, check that your included attempt or new voucher is usable, your target appointment fits its expiry, and your latest practice shows that you can apply the changes under time pressure. If the same mistakes persist, repeat the relevant review block and reassess the date. Your next action is to verify the voucher terms and choose one documented weak area to work on first.
