ACCUPLACER 2027: Which Tests You'll Take and What College Board Has Confirmed

Testing in 2027? College Board hasn't announced a new ACCUPLACER. See what stays the same, what can change at your college, how to spot outdated Classic ACCUPLACER materials, and what to check before you test.

Short answer

If you take the ACCUPLACER in 2027, you take the same Next-Generation tests used today: Reading, Writing, Arithmetic, Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra, and Statistics (QAS), and Advanced Algebra and Functions (AAF), each scored from 200 to 300, plus WritePlacer or the ESL tests if your college assigns them. As of October 26, 2026, College Board had not announced a new version, and its current Program Manual is the 2025–26 edition. What can change in 2027 is local: your college's placement scores, retest rules, fees, and testing options.

What College Board has confirmed for 2027 test takers

Nothing about the national test is scheduled to change. Here is what the current official material establishes, checked on October 26, 2026:

QuestionAnswer for 2027
Which tests exist? The Next-Generation placement tests: Reading, Writing, Arithmetic, QAS, and AAF, plus four ESL tests and two essays (WritePlacer and WritePlacer ESL)
How many questions?20 per placement test in the standard adaptive form, 25 for Writing
How is it scored?200–300 per placement test, 20–120 per ESL test, 1–8 for WritePlacer
Is there a pass or fail? No; your college sets placement scores
Is it timed? The multiple-choice tests are generally untimed; WritePlacer may be timed
Which manual is current? The 2025–26 Program Manual; College Board's manual link still served that edition on October 26, 2026
Has a new version been announced? No

So "2026–2027" or "2027" on a study guide's cover doesn't mean a new exam. It means the publisher refreshed its book. The test itself is the one described above, and the overview of the five tests applies in 2027 as written.

Because the content is stable, preparation you start now still counts. Practice the five Next-Generation tests you'll see in 2027, focusing on the ones your college assigns.

What can change for you in 2027

The parts of ACCUPLACER that can change are set by colleges, not College Board:

  • Placement scores. College Board recommends colleges re-examine their cutoffs every three to five years, or sooner when their students or results change. A new catalog year can bring new numbers, so use your college's 2027–28 chart once it's published rather than an older one.
  • Which tests you take. A college can add or drop WritePlacer, change which math test you start on, or change its branching rules.
  • Whether you test at all. Some colleges accept high school GPA, SAT or ACT scores, or prior coursework instead of a placement test, and those rules can change between catalog years. The exemptions guide explains how to check.
  • Retest limits and fees. Both are local policies.
  • Testing options. Remote testing, vouchers, and walk-in hours vary by college and can change between terms.

If you're enrolling for spring, summer, or fall 2027, check each of these on your college's current pages close to your test date. The 2027 scheduling guide shows how to time the test around your term.

Old materials: how to spot the Classic ACCUPLACER

College Board launched the Next-Generation placement tests in September 2016, replacing what it calls the "classic" tests. Books and websites built for the classic version still circulate, often with new covers. You can usually spot them by test names and score scale:

Classic test (scored 20–120)Next-Generation test that replaced it (scored 200–300)How closely the content aligns, per College Board
Reading ComprehensionReadingStrong
Sentence SkillsWritingMinimal
ArithmeticArithmeticStrong
Elementary AlgebraQASStrong
College-Level MathAAFModerate

The mismatch matters most for Writing. College Board rates the content alignment between Sentence Skills and the Next-Generation Writing test as minimal, and every current Writing question belongs to a full draft passage, with choices about organization, focus, and transitions as well as grammar. Materials written for Sentence Skills are likely to miss those passage-level question types. The Writing test guide covers the current format.

If someone tells you their score was 85 or 102, that is a classic or ESL scale, not a Next-Generation placement score, and it can't be compared with your college's current 200–300 chart.

Texas students in 2027

Public colleges and universities in Texas use the TSIA2, a different College Board test with its own required Pre-Assessment Activity. If you're enrolling in a Texas public college in 2027, prepare for the TSIA2.

What to watch between now and your test

  • A 2026–27 Program Manual. College Board's annual manual is where test changes would be documented. If a new edition appears, check its test descriptions and retest policy.
  • Your college's catalog. Placement scores usually appear in the catalog or on the testing-center page.
  • Your own date. Placement is usually needed before registration, and retest waits can push a second attempt past a deadline.

Until College Board says otherwise, the safest plan for a 2027 test date is the same as for any date: confirm your tests and target scores, take a baseline, and use your 2027 test date to set a study plan by test.
