How to Register for the ASWB Bachelors Exam: Board Approval, Fees and Scheduling

Register for the ASWB Bachelors exam in the right order: board approval or ASWB preapproval, the US$230 ASWB fee, the Authorization to Test, then a Pearson appointment. Every ASWB charge and every deadline that can forfeit your fee.

Short answer

In most jurisdictions, apply to your social work board first and wait for approval to test. Then register and pay ASWB US$230 in ASWBCentral. ASWB emails an Authorization to Test within two business days, and you use it to book a Pearson test center. In Colorado, Maine, Texas and Utah, you apply to ASWB Licensing Services for exam preapproval instead (US$60 on ASWB's preapproval pages) and apply to the board after passing. ASWB's fees are nonrefundable, so the order matters.

Three organizations handle your ASWB Bachelors exam, and each has one job. Your board decides whether you are eligible and which exam category you may take. ASWB registers you, takes the exam fee and issues your Authorization to Test. Pearson runs the test center. ASWB's fees are nonrefundable, so paying the right organization at the wrong moment can cost you money.

The usual order: board, then ASWB, then Pearson

This is the sequence in the ASWB Examination Guidebook (08/2026) and ASWB's exam page, as checked on October 27, 2026:

  1. Apply to your board. Submit the license application, pay the board's application fee, and wait for approval to register for the exam. ASWB's FAQ is blunt: "You cannot register to take the exam until ASWB receives approval from your board." If your board doesn't license BSWs, this is where you'll find out. Which states use the ASWB Bachelors exam shows where candidates tested in 2025.
  2. Register and pay ASWB. In ASWBCentral you answer demographic and education questions, sign the Candidate Rules Agreement electronically, and pay US$230 for the Bachelors exam (the same fee as the Associate and Masters exams). ASWB accepts Mastercard, Visa and Discover.
  3. Get your Authorization to Test. ASWB emails it within two business days. It contains your scheduling instructions and any approved nonstandard testing arrangements.
  4. Schedule with Pearson. Log in to ASWBCentral and go to the Pearson page, or call Pearson at 877.884.9537. Pearson emails a confirmation within 24 hours. If it doesn't arrive, the guidebook says the scheduling didn't go through and it is up to you to contact Pearson.

There are no set test dates. You choose an available time at any Pearson test center, and your score is always reported to the jurisdiction where you applied. For the format, the result and the fee on one screen, see the ASWB Bachelors exam summary and the official ASWB links behind it.

The preapproval route in Colorado, Maine, Texas and Utah

In these four states, the guidebook says you first apply for exam preapproval with ASWB Licensing Services and apply for the license with the state board after passing. For a bachelor-level license, ASWB's state pages list:

Colorado's page lists only master's-level licenses. Utah's page lists a Social Service Worker license that accepts a BSW but doesn't name an ASWB exam for it, so ask Utah directly.

Testing in your final BSW semester

ASWB's posted policy manual (Section II, version 1.2022) says boards "may approve candidates for examination who are in their final semester of the BSW program." May, not must. The Texas and Maine pages above show how it works where it's allowed: a dean's letter replaces the final transcript. Elsewhere, ask your board whether it approves final-semester applicants and what proof it wants.

If you are testing while finishing field hours, pick a date that leaves real study time. The free ASWB Bachelors study planner turns a test date and daily minutes into an outline.

All amounts were checked on October 27, 2026. A retake means paying the US$230 again, which the ASWB Bachelors retake guide covers along with the 90-day wait. Two ASWB resources are free: the guidebook itself, and the FifthTheory Test Mastery Inclusion program, which your Authorization to Test email invites you to join.

Full Bachelors prep on Passy is shown as "At launch," and checkout isn't open, so no payment can be taken yet. When it opens, it is planned as a one-time purchase, and you can pick a planned 30-, 90- or 180-day study window that ends after your Pearson date.

Settle these before you pay ASWB

Your name. Register with the first and last names on the two IDs you'll bring. The test center doesn't check middle names, middle initials or punctuation such as hyphens. If your board approval has your name wrong, ASWB's FAQ says to ask the board to send a correction, and it can take 24 to 48 business hours to reach ASWB's system.

Nonstandard testing arrangements. Extra time or other arrangements for a disability, a health condition, lactation, American Sign Language, or English as a second language must be requested and approved before you register and pay. ASWB says a reply can take up to three weeks and that arrangements can't be added to an appointment you've already scheduled. For ESL arrangements, your board must approve you to take the exam first. ASWB's appointments page says candidates with arrangements schedule by phone, on a separate Pearson line, 800.466.0450.

Timing. The guidebook recommends scheduling four to six weeks before your preferred date, because Pearson centers run many other exams.

How long your Authorization to Test lasts

  • It covers one exam only.
  • It may be valid for up to one year, but your board can set an earlier expiration date, and you can't test after a board-imposed date.
  • If you don't test before it expires, you forfeit the exam fee.
  • If something prevents you from testing in time, you may get one extension of up to six months per registration, depending on your board's approval. ASWB's extension page says to request it within 30 days of the expiration date, and to leave yourself time to test in case it's denied.

Rescheduling or canceling without losing the US$230

The guidebook's rules:

  • Cancel or reschedule at least 24 hours before the appointment, in ASWBCentral or by calling Pearson at 877.884.9537.
  • For a Monday or Tuesday appointment, call before 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time on the Friday before.
  • If your arrangements include a reader, scribe or ASL interpreter, ASWB asks for two business days' notice.
  • When changing online, finish every step, including Submit Order, and keep Pearson's confirmation email.

Changes made within these rules carry no extra fee. If you miss an appointment, ASWB may excuse it if you file an Excused Absence Request within 14 days, waiting at least 24 hours after the missed time. Processing typically takes two weeks, some requests carry a fee, and ASWB says not to register again until you have its decision.

What to bring on ASWB Bachelors test day

Two original IDs, one from the guidebook's primary list and one from its secondary list, with first and last names matching your Authorization to Test. Without proper ID you can't test, and the guidebook says you forfeit the fee. Arrive 30 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows and forfeit the fee. ASWB suspended its online-proctoring pilot as of July 31, 2026, so plan on a Pearson test center. The ASWB Bachelors format guide walks through the four hours, and once the date is booked, full prep planned for launch, sold as a one-time payment with no auto-renewal, is one way to fill the weeks in between.
