RD Exam Changes in 2027: New Test Specifications and Which Outline Applies to You

From January 1, 2027, CDR's RD exam follows the 2027–2031 test specifications, with four new domains and Human Nutrition and Medical Nutrition Therapy at 40%. See which outline your test date puts you on, where each 2022–2026 topic moved, and what stays the same.

Short answer

From January 1, 2027, CDR's RD exam follows the 2027–2031 test specifications, approved on June 25, 2025: Fundamentals of Dietetics Practice 23%, Community and Public Health Nutrition 22%, Human Nutrition and Medical Nutrition Therapy 40%, and Food Science and Food Systems 15%. Appointments through December 31, 2026 still follow the 2022–2026 outline. No CDR page checked on October 27, 2026 announces a format or fee change, and CDR has published its passing score of 25 for the current specifications only. A separate new rule sets a lifetime limit of eight attempts for candidates who establish eligibility on or after January 1, 2027.

Which RD exam outline your test date puts you on

CDR dates each RD exam outline by the period it covers, so the day of your appointment decides which one you're tested on. Your eligibility date and your Authorization to Test don't:

Appointment dateOutlineDomains and weights
On or before December 31, 20262022–2026 test specificationsPrinciples of Dietetics 21%, Nutrition Care for Individuals and Groups 45%, Management of Food and Nutrition Programs and Services 21%, Foodservice Systems 13%
On or after January 1, 20272027–2031 test specificationsFundamentals of Dietetics Practice 23%, Community and Public Health Nutrition 22%, Human Nutrition and Medical Nutrition Therapy 40%, Food Science and Food Systems 15%

The exam runs year-round by appointment at Pearson VUE test centers, so there are no fixed "2027 exam dates" to wait for. Expect older pages to describe the current exam: CDR's April 2026 handbook prints the 2022–2026 domains, and its RD Exam Overview still names the outline that "became effective January 1, 2022" as current. Both are accurate until December 31. The new document is posted on CDR's Examination Resources page as the 2027–2031 RD Test Specifications and Expanded Study Outline.

The four 2027–2031 RD exam domains

CDR approved the new specifications on June 25, 2025. They describe what's needed "for minimally competent performance as a newly credentialed practitioner":

DomainWeightTopics in the outlineRough share of 100–120 scored questions
I. Fundamentals of Dietetics Practice23%A. Management and Leadership; B. Marketing and Public Relations; C. Research Applications; D. Professional PracticeAbout 23–28
II. Community and Public Health Nutrition22%A. Community Nutrition Guidelines and Policies; B. Community Needs Assessment; C. Community Nutrition Programs and Services for Individuals and GroupsAbout 22–26
III. Human Nutrition and Medical Nutrition Therapy40%A. Fundamentals of Human Nutrition and Physiology; B. Screening and Assessment; C. Diagnosis; D. Planning and Intervention; E. Monitoring and EvaluationAbout 40–48
IV. Food Science and Food Systems15%A. Food Science; B. Menu Development; C. Flow of Food from Procurement to ServiceAbout 15–18

The last column is Passy's arithmetic, not a CDR figure: each weight applied to the 100 to 120 scored questions the handbook describes. CDR doesn't publish item counts per domain, and an adaptive exam draws a different set for each candidate. Use the column to see proportions, not to count questions on test day.

The biggest structural change is that community nutrition now stands on its own. In 2022–2026, one domain at 45% covered nutrition care for both individuals and groups. In 2027–2031, care for individuals sits in Domain III at 40%, and the community side (needs assessment, programs, policy, nutrition education) gets its own 22%. If you want to see how practice can follow that split, see how the planned CDR RD Exam prep tags every question to the 2027–2031 domains.

Where the 2022–2026 RD exam topics went

Most content didn't disappear. It moved. This map compares the two CDR study outlines line by line. It's Passy's reading of the documents, not a CDR crosswalk:

What the new RD exam outline no longer names

Several 2022–2026 headings have no named counterpart in the 2027–2031 outline:

  • Financial Management as its own topic, with budget types and methods (operational and capital, zero-based, flexible), accounting principles and financial statements
  • Pricing strategies such as breakeven and loss leader
  • Coding and billing, insurance requirements
  • Production systems (conventional, commissary, cook-chill) and equipment and facility layout planning
  • Named quality tools such as Kaizen, Total Quality Management and Lean Six Sigma
  • MyPlate, telehealth and the dysphagia diet standard named in the 2022 outline

Don't drop money and operations questions altogether. The new outline still lists budget development, cost/benefit analysis, productivity analysis, forecasting, portion control and yield analysis, and inventory management. A practical approach is to treat the topics above as lower priority, not zero, especially if you studied with 2022–2026 materials.

Some items appear by name for the first time, including health equity, HIPAA, the Academy/ASPEN and GLIM malnutrition guidelines, the Social-Ecological Model, the logic model, primary, secondary and tertiary prevention, and amputations alongside wounds. Cultural humility, which the 2022 outline listed under human resources, now also sits in nutrition assessment, with five "R"s: Reflection, Respect, Regard, Relevance, Resiliency.

Why CDR rewrote the RD exam outline

CDR's FAQ says the content outline changes every five years after a review of dietetics practice. For 2027, the basis is a job task analysis CDR ran with Pearson from October 2024 to June 2025. Its national validation survey ran from January through May 2025, and the final analyses used responses from 1,723 RDs or RDNs. CDR's summary says frequency, importance and criticality analyses were used to set the content priorities and weights, which subject matter experts then reviewed, and the analysis produced the four domains above.

The same study set a separate outline for the DTR exam (40%, 30% and 30% across three domains). That's a different exam with its own handbook. Don't study from DTR materials for the RD exam.

What CDR hasn't announced changing on the RD exam for 2027

These rules come from CDR's 2026 handbook and 2025 FAQ, and no CDR page checked on October 27, 2026 says they change with the new outline:

  • Format: 125 to 145 four-option questions (100 to 120 scored, 25 unscored pretest), 3 hours, no skipping or going back
  • Fee: $250 per attempt, or $350 for the optional bundle with a discounted retake
  • Passing score: a scaled 25 on a 1–50 scale, the standard CDR publishes for the current specifications

Two caveats. The handbook says the passing standard "was established with the implementation of the current test specifications," and as of October 27, 2026 CDR hadn't published a passing standard for the 2027–2031 specifications or said whether 25 carries over. The 2025 FAQ also groups score-report sub-scores by the 2022–2026 domains, and no 2027 grouping was published as of October 27, 2026. Read the handbook edition in force on your test date. The passing score guide explains the scale.

Other RD credential dates in 2027

January 1, 20272027–2031 test specifications take effectEveryone testing on or after that date
January 1, 2027Lifetime limit of eight attempts, adopted by CDR's board in May 2026Only people who establish exam eligibility on or after January 1, 2027
June 1, 2027Annual RD registration maintenance fee rises from $80 to $90Credentialed RDs and RDNs

The attempt limit doesn't reach candidates whose eligibility was established before 2027, by CDR's wording. The retake guide covers the details CDR has and hasn't published.

Testing in late 2026 or early 2027: what to weigh

If you already have your Authorization to Test, the calendar matters in two ways:

  1. A late-2026 retake falls in 2027. CDR lets you retest 46 days after an unsuccessful attempt. By Passy's count, a failed attempt on November 16, 2026 or later puts the earliest retake on January 1, 2027 or later, under the new outline. Plan for that before you book a December date.
  2. Your materials have a date too. CDR's free practice questions are classified by the 2022–2026 domains, and so are books and courses written before the new outline was approved in June 2025. For a 2027 appointment, check each topic against the new outline rather than against the old domain labels.

There's no official advantage to either outline. Choose the date when you'll be ready. If that's 2027, compare the planned 30-, 90- and 180-day access periods for a 2027 test date while you build your schedule.

Planning a 2027 RD exam date

  1. Confirm your outline. Any appointment from January 1, 2027 uses the four domains above.
  2. Weight your time by the new percentages. The RD exam study plan guide turns 23/22/40/15 into weekly hours.
  3. Use the free planner. The RD exam study planner weights focus days by the 2027 weights and shows the 2022–2026 domains if your date is before January 1, 2027.
  4. Test yourself across all four domains. The 20 free RD exam practice questions are mixed across the new domains. Full prep planned for launch adds 1,700 questions, and you can check the planned question counts for each of the four new domains, including 680 for Human Nutrition and Medical Nutrition Therapy.
  5. Recheck CDR's study page in January 2027 for an updated handbook.
