RD Exam Cost: The $250 Fee, the $350 Test Bundle, and What Isn't Refunded

CDR's RD exam costs $250 per attempt, or $350 with a Test Bundle that includes a discounted retake. See when the bundle pays off, which mistakes forfeit the fee, how cancellations and illness are handled, and what you pay after passing.

Short answer

CDR's RD exam fee is $250 per attempt, paid by credit card through Pearson VUE when you schedule, as checked on October 27, 2026. An optional $350 Test Bundle covers your first attempt plus a voucher for one discounted retake if you don't pass. It isn't refunded if you pass. You get your money back only if you cancel online at least 48 hours ahead or document an illness. Arriving late, missing the appointment or bringing the wrong ID forfeits the fee. After passing, the first annual RD registration fee is $80.

What the RD exam costs, item by item

CDR's 2026 handbook, its Test Bundle Voucher page and its registration maintenance page list these amounts, checked on October 27, 2026:

ItemAmountWhen you pay it
RD exam, one attempt$250In full by credit card when you schedule with Pearson VUE
Test Bundle: first attempt plus a discounted retake voucher$350As an upgrade at checkout when you register for a full-price attempt
Retake without a bundle$250When you schedule again, after reauthorizing with CDR
Retake with a bundle voucherAlready paidThe voucher ID replaces payment when you schedule the retake
Appeal of a CDR policy decision$20With the written appeal
First RD registration fee, after passing$80 ($90 from June 1, 2027)After CDR's fee email, about 72 hours after you pass

The exam fee is separate from Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics membership dues and from CDR registration maintenance fees. For comparison, the DTR exam costs $160, or $235 with its bundle. Make sure any voucher you buy matches your exam, since vouchers are non-refundable.

Is the $350 RD exam Test Bundle worth it?

The bundle is $100 more than a single attempt, and the $100 buys one discounted retake. Here is the arithmetic for the first two outcomes, plus a third attempt at full price:

OutcomePaying per attemptWith the Test Bundle
Pass on the first attempt$250$350 (the extra $100 isn't refunded)
Pass on the second attempt$500$350
Pass on the third attempt$750$600

So the bundle saves $150 if you need a second attempt and costs $100 extra if you don't. CDR's latest reports show that about two in three first attempts pass, but an average can't tell you which group you'll be in. Base the choice on your own readiness: practice results across all four domains, and how much a second $250 would strain your budget. Once full prep launches, you can see how the planned prep reports your accuracy in each domain before you decide.

The voucher has conditions, from CDR's bundle FAQ and voucher page:

  • Retakes only. It's valid only for an authorized retake. You still reauthorize with CDR first.
  • First exam first. You can use it only after taking the full-price exam it came with. If you miss that first exam, you can't use the voucher until you take a paid exam.
  • Missed appointments count. A no-show on a voucher appointment uses that voucher attempt.
  • Two years. Vouchers expire within two years. CDR staff can be asked about an extension.
  • Yours alone. Vouchers can't be transferred or refunded.

If you test with approved accommodations, you can still buy the bundle: ask for the "discount retake voucher add-on" when you schedule by phone.

RD exam refunds, cancellations and forfeited fees

A fee can be lost to a scheduling or test-day rule as well as to a failed score. The handbook and CDR's rescheduling sheet say:

SituationWhat happens to your fee
You cancel online at least 48 hours before the appointmentRefunded
You reschedule at least 48 hours ahead (48 business hours by phone)Allowed. The new date must fall inside your authorization period
Your authorization would expire before the new dateCancel with Pearson for a refund, reauthorize with CDR, then pay again
You cancel within 48 hours and the test center is openNot refunded
You become ill within 48 hoursEmail CDR at cdrexams@eatright.org with an explanation and a physician's letter. CDR's rescheduling sheet says CDR will have Pearson cancel and refund the fee
You arrive lateNot seated. Fee forfeited
You don't show upNot refunded
Your ID doesn't match your Pearson profileTurned away. Fee lost
You bring an electronic device to the proctor stationNot permitted to test. Fee forfeited
You quit before answering the minimum number of questionsNot scored. Not refunded
You fail the examNot refunded
The test center closes for weather or an emergencyPearson emails you to reschedule

Two habits help you avoid several of these: book online and keep every confirmation email, and check that the name on your ID matches your Pearson profile exactly.

What the RD exam fee doesn't include

CDR's FAQ says purchasing a certification preparation product is not required, and CDR doesn't guarantee that buying one leads to a pass. Its free materials include the study outline, a reference list and practice questions with rationales, all on the Examination Resources page.

If you're comparing paid prep, note that full Passy prep for this exam isn't on sale yet. You can compare the planned one-time prices for 30, 90 or 180 days of prep now. Each is a single payment with no auto-renewal, and checkout opens at launch.

Costs after you pass the RD exam

Passing ends the exam costs, but CDR's registration maintenance page lists what comes next:

  • First registration fee: CDR emails a fee notice about 72 hours after you pass. You can't be verified or receive a digital credential until it's paid.
  • Late fee: after 90 days, a $50 late fee applies, for $130 in total. After 120 days, registered status is terminated.
  • Every year after: the RD fee is $80, due by August 31. CDR has scheduled an increase to $90 on June 1, 2027.
  • State licensure: licensure is a separate, state-based process with its own requirements and fees. Check your state board.

A simple RD exam budget

Using CDR's current fees, here's what reaching the credential costs at the exam and registration stage (Passy's arithmetic, excluding prep, travel and state fees):

PathTotal
Pass on the first attempt, no bundle, plus the first $80 registration fee$330
Pass on the first attempt with the bundle, plus $80$430
Pass on the second attempt with the bundle, plus $80$430
Pass on the second attempt without the bundle, plus $80$580

The free tools cost nothing at any stage: the 20 free RD exam practice questions, the study planner and the retake planner need no account.
