CEH vs Security+: Compare the Exams and Your Study Goal

Compare the CEH knowledge exam with the documented Security+ SY0-701 exam, including question formats, topic coverage, eligibility versus recommended background, and a practical choice process.

Short answer

The CEH knowledge exam has 125 multiple-choice questions over four hours, while the documented Security+ SY0-701 exam has up to 90 multiple-choice and performance-based questions over 90 minutes. Choose by the credential you need, the topics you want to study, and the assessment tasks you need to prepare for. CEH has documented eligibility routes; the experience described in the SY0-701 objectives is a recommendation, so confirm CompTIA's admission requirements and selectable exam code before paying.

What does each exam ask you to demonstrate?

EC-Council lists the CEH knowledge exam as 125 multiple-choice questions over four hours; CompTIA's documented Security+ SY0-701 exam has up to 90 multiple-choice and performance-based questions over 90 minutes. Choose between them by the credential you need, the content you want to learn, and the work the assessment requires.

The Security+ column describes SY0-701 specifically. Its objectives establish that exam's specifications; they do not establish which version will be available for your eventual appointment. Confirm the selectable exam code before buying a voucher or study materials.

For CEH, practice explaining why one answer fits a scenario better than the alternatives. For the documented Security+ format, include practice that requires applying concepts as well as answering multiple-choice questions. These are preparation suggestions, not examples of confidential exam content. The question counts and durations alone do not establish which exam would be easier for you.

How do CEH domains differ from the documented SY0-701 scope?

EC-Council's CEH Blueprint v5.0, checked November 3, 2026, organizes the knowledge exam into nine domains. Its ethical-hacking coverage includes reconnaissance, system hacking, network and perimeter hacking, and web application hacking. The CEH blueprint guide gives the complete domain map and question counts.

CompTIA's SY0-701 objectives, checked November 5, 2026, organize the content into five areas:

SY0-701 domainPublished weight
General Security Concepts12%
Threats, Vulnerabilities, and Mitigations22%
Security Architecture18%
Security Operations28%
Security Program Management and Oversight20%

The document's introductory skills span assessing security posture, securing hybrid environments, governance, risk and compliance, and incident response. That gives you a broader security and operations comparison against CEH's ethical-hacking organization. Shared terminology does not make the two objective lists interchangeable.

As an editorial preparation exercise, write one task you need to improve. “Distinguish reconnaissance from later system-hacking activity” points you toward reviewing the CEH map. “Explain how security operations, incident response and governance connect” points you toward reviewing the corresponding Security+ objectives. Neither example proves that only one exam covers a concept; use it to identify what you need from your next study program.

If CEH fits that goal, full CEH prep planned for launch includes 1,800 questions across nine domains. That is CEH knowledge-exam preparation; it is not a Security+ preparation product.

CEH has a route decision to resolve before purchase. EC-Council's eligibility policy, checked November 3, 2026, allows qualifying official training or the self-study route, which requires substantiating two years in an information-security role. For self-study, the sequence is eligibility application, approval, then voucher purchase. Training packages may already include a voucher, so check before purchasing another.

Use the CEH cost and eligibility guide to work through your route. Record the evidence you need and who must confirm it. Do not treat being comfortable with practice questions as a substitute for eligibility approval.

The SY0-701 objectives describe recommended experience: at least two years in IT administration focused on security, hands-on technical information security, and broad security concepts. That wording describes expected preparation. It does not establish a mandatory two-year application gate, and it does not establish a universal no-prerequisites rule either.

Separate two questions in your notes: “May I register under the provider's current rules?” and “Does my background match the documented preparation expectations?” Confirm the first directly with CompTIA; use the objectives to assess the second. A recommendation and an admission requirement should not occupy the same checkbox.

Which preparation tasks fit three candidate profiles?

These hypothetical profiles are editorial decision aids, not a required certification sequence or a prediction of results.

You have a requirement that names CEH. First confirm exactly which credential or assessment the requirement means, then resolve the appropriate eligibility route. For the CEH knowledge exam, compare your gaps with its blueprint. Start with the 20 free CEH practice questions and note concepts you cannot yet explain; a small set does not establish overall readiness.

You want to develop broader security and operations knowledge. Compare the five documented SY0-701 areas with your work or study goals. For example, a hypothetical learner comfortable discussing threats but unfamiliar with governance and incident response could list those as gaps to investigate. Review the exact objectives available for the exam you can book before committing to that plan.

You are an experienced practitioner seeking a hands-on assessment. Do not infer that the CEH knowledge exam is a practical examination because “ethical hacker” appears in its name. EC-Council's training page, checked November 3, 2026, identifies CEH Practical as an optional additional assessment. Read the CEH versus OSCP comparison to examine a different assessment choice, and confirm each provider's current requirements.

If you choose CEH and terminology recall is a gap, full CEH prep planned for launch includes 500 flashcards. Keep that resource choice tied to CEH study; it does not establish readiness for a separate practical assessment.

There is no need to invent a universal “Security+ first” or “CEH first” rule. Write down the requirement or learning gap that makes one your immediate priority, then identify one practice task that would test your reasoning.

How should you compare your complete quotes?

Request comparable written quotes before deciding which route fits your budget. The worksheet below identifies items to verify; it does not imply that every item carries a separate charge.

Item to record for each optionWhat to confirm
Exact exam and regionExam code, country or region, currency, and any purchase restrictions
VoucherWhat it includes, its validity, and the permitted delivery option
TrainingWhether training is included or separate, and whether its package contains a voucher
EligibilityAny application process, required documentation, and associated charges
RetakeWhether an additional attempt is included and what conditions apply
TaxesThe final payable amount for your purchase
RenewalCurrent continuing-certification requirements and recurring fees

Keep a quoted base price separate from optional training and conditional retake spending. For CEH, resolve the training-versus-self-study route before comparing totals, because the purchasing sequence and package contents matter.

This comparison does not verify Security+ prices, passing scores or renewal figures. Obtain those details from CompTIA for the exact product you are considering; a format-and-objectives document is not a complete purchase policy.

Which exam code and requirements must you confirm before payment?

Make your final decision concrete:

  1. Name the goal. Write the credential requirement or learning need you intend to meet.
  2. Confirm the exam. Match the selectable code to the objectives and the voucher. This article uses SY0-701 as its verified Security+ reference.
  3. Resolve admission separately from readiness. Complete the CEH eligibility steps that apply, or confirm CompTIA's current registration requirements. Then assess your knowledge gaps.
  4. Check the quote and appointment terms. Verify inclusions, validity and the provider's current rules before payment.
  5. Schedule relevant preparation. Choose practice that matches the assessment and the areas you need to improve.

The accessible SY0-701 objectives do not verify successor launch dates or retirement dates. For a future appointment, including one planned for 2027, confirm the available exam and its objectives directly before committing. A planning year does not establish a new official version or guarantee continued availability.

If CEH is your choice, use the free CEH study planner to reserve study sessions, then consult the CEH study schedule for an adjustable structure. For a full set of knowledge questions, full CEH prep planned for launch includes a 125-question mock exam.

Before buying, you should be able to state your chosen exam code, why it meets your goal, which requirements remain to be confirmed, and what you will study first.
