CEN Practice Tests: BCEN's Practice Exam, the 10 Sample Questions, and What Else to Use
BCEN's official CEN practice tools are a free set of 10 sample questions, a practice exam on BCEN Learn with timed, non-timed and Quick 10 modes, and a $250 review course. Here is what each includes, what it can't tell you, and how to check any other question bank.
Short answer
BCEN offers three official CEN practice tools. A free PDF of 10 sample questions shows the question format but, BCEN says, not the real exam's difficulty. The CEN practice exam on BCEN Learn runs timed, non-timed or as a Quick 10 of random questions, gives a rationale and references for each answer, and earns 3 CEs; BCEN's voucher page lists a $75 standard price. The online review course costs $250 and earns 21 CEs. BCEN suggests taking the practice exam at the start of your prep and again as a final pretest, and it guarantees no result.
BCEN's official CEN practice tools at a glance
BCEN links its own CEN preparation tools from its study and prepare page. As checked on October 27, 2026:
| Tool | Cost | What it is | What BCEN says about it |
|---|---|---|---|
| CEN sample questions | Free PDF | Ten questions with the preferred response in bold | They show the format and "how questions reflect the nursing process," not the difficulty of the real exam |
| CEN practice exam (BCEN Learn) | $75 standard price on BCEN's voucher page | Timed, non-timed, or Quick 10 (10 random questions); answers with rationale and references | Take it at the start to find weak areas and again as your final pretest; 3 CEs on completion |
| CEN review course | $250 | Self-guided online modules that follow the content outline, with practice questions throughout | 21 CEs; an average of 20 to 30 hours; up to one year to finish |
| CEN content outline and resource list | Free PDFs | The 11 areas and their item counts; books and websites BCEN lists as helpful | BCEN "does not endorse any resources" |
BCEN adds on the same page that it "makes no guarantees as to the success of a candidate" who uses its tools. Group pricing exists through the voucher program: practice-exam vouchers cost $55 to $65 each in groups of three or more, and review-course vouchers $215 to $225.
What the 10 CEN sample questions show, and what they don't
The sample PDF is BCEN's free question set for the CEN. Each item is a single question with four options and one preferred response. Most open with a short patient situation, and several put MOST, PRIORITY or BEST in capitals. Some ask which finding is most critical, some ask for the priority intervention, and others ask what the nurse should assess or monitor for. The ten span cardiac, airway, neurological, obstetric, mental health, sepsis, musculoskeletal, facial injury, triage and end-of-life topics.
Three limits matter:
- Not a difficulty sample. BCEN says the items are not meant to reflect the difficulty of the actual exam
- Older than the outline. The file name is dated 2024, before the July 2026 outline took effect. The format still applies, but don't use the ten to judge area weights
- No rationales, and too few to score. The PDF marks the preferred answer but doesn't explain it, and ten items can't estimate a result. Use them to learn the style, and work out for yourself why the bold answer beats each other option
The CEN priority questions guide turns that style into a decision order with original worked examples.
The BCEN CEN practice exam: formats, price and timing
BCEN's how-to-study page describes three formats:
- Timed: "closely simulates the actual testing environment." You can see answers and explanations when you finish the whole exam.
- Non-timed: the same benefits "without the stress of watching the clock."
- Quick 10: 10 randomly selected questions for a short session.
BCEN says only its practice exams are "created by the same organization designing the actual exams," built by a committee of nurses working across the emergency spectrum, and that they help you get used to the computer-based format. Answers come "backed up with rationale and references," and you earn 3 CEs on successful completion, which count toward recertification later. BCEN's pages checked for this guide don't state how many questions the full practice exam has.
On price, BCEN's voucher page lists $75 as the standard practice-exam price, and its vouchers apply only to the 365-day access option, not to a 90-day option. Check BCEN Learn for the current price of each option before you buy. BCEN suggests taking the exam twice, at the start and as a final pretest, so confirm that your access period covers both dates.
The CEN review course: what $250 covers
The review course page describes "CEN Review Course: Essentials of Emergency Nursing" as microlearning modules that follow the CEN content outline, with anatomy and physiology, assessment, treatments and education, a printable study guide, and rationales with references. The modules can be taken in any order after the introduction.
Two details are worth knowing. BCEN's pages give different question counts: the review course page says "nearly 250" practice questions, the study and prepare page says 175, and the recertify page says "175+." And the course page says the course "was created independently of anyone developing the CEN certification exam," so it shares no proprietary exam information. It is a structured content review, not a preview of exam items.
Free and third-party CEN practice questions: a quality checklist
Search results for "CEN practice test" mix publisher sites, flashcard sets and question banks. Before you spend time on one, check it against what BCEN publishes:
- Current outline. It should use the July 2026 structure: 11 areas, Gastrointestinal Emergencies separate from Genitourinary, Gynecology, and Obstetrical, a Head, Eye, Ear, Nose, Throat area, and Professional Issues split into Prioritization and Legal and ethical issues. The CEN content outline guide lists every change
- Current facts. A bank that still quotes 106 of 150 was built for the old outline; the standard since July 6, 2026 is 99 of 150. A page that names a test vendor other than PSI has outdated logistics: BCEN tests through PSI
- An explanation for every option. Practice teaches when you can see why the three other choices are not preferred
- Original items only. BCEN's candidate handbook says all exam questions are BCEN's copyrighted property and prohibits reproducing or transmitting test content. A set sold or shared as "real CEN questions" is a red flag, not a shortcut
Passy's 20 free CEN practice questions are original, tagged to the 11 current areas, and explained option by option. For a larger pool built the same way, original CEN questions planned for launch are sorted by the 11 current areas.
Where each CEN practice test fits in a study schedule
A practical sequence, Passy's suggestion rather than a BCEN rule, for an 8-week plan:
| When | Tool | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Before week 1 or during it | The 10 sample questions | Learn the stem style |
| Week 1 | BCEN practice exam (timed or non-timed), or a mixed timed set | Baseline: misses by area, not just a total |
| Weeks 1 to 6 | Area drills and short mixed sets, such as Quick 10 sessions | Practice each area while you review it |
| Weeks 7 and 8 | One full-length timed rehearsal, then BCEN's practice exam as a final pretest | Pacing, stamina and a last look at weak areas |
The CEN study plan lays out the content weeks behind this table. If you want a second long rehearsal besides BCEN's, a full-length CEN rehearsal, scored at the end, is planned for launch.
Reading a CEN practice score without over-reading it
No practice exam, BCEN's included, is presented as a predictor of your result. The CEN passing score guide explains why the 99-of-150 standard and form equating make a single practice percentage a rough signal at best. Three habits help more than the total:
- Count misses by area. Five misses in a 10-item area are half that area; five misses in Cardiovascular's 18 are less than a third.
- Sort misses by cause. A gap in knowledge needs content review; choosing a correct-but-not-first action needs priority practice.
- Watch the trend. Compare the same area across several sets rather than reacting to one score.
Your next CEN practice step
Download BCEN's 10 sample questions today and, for each one, write a line on why the bold answer is preferred. Then take the free Passy set to see which areas slip first. When you know your test month, compare the free 20-question set with planned full CEN access; checkout isn't open yet.
