CySA+ Online vs Test Center: Choosing Where to Take the Exam
Choose between CySA+ online testing and a test center by checking your room, equipment, ID and travel constraints before you book.
Short answer
Pearson VUE offers CompTIA testing online through OnVUE and at test centers; online testing requires a private room, compatible equipment and a successful system check on your intended computer and network. Choose online only after confirming that your setup and ID meet the current requirements. A test center is the better fit if you cannot reliably keep the room private or meet the online technology rules, provided its location and appointment instructions work for you.
What must you have to take CySA+ online?
You can choose online delivery through Pearson VUE's OnVUE service or take CySA+ at a test center. Pearson VUE requires online candidates to use a compatible computer and network in a private room, so choose online only after the intended setup passes the system test and you have checked the room and ID rules.
The online requirements below were checked November 3, 2026. Recheck the CompTIA OnVUE requirements before booking, especially for an appointment in 2027; current requirements are not a guarantee of future rules.
- Computer and peripherals: check the supported operating systems and use a working camera, microphone and speaker. Only one display is allowed; headphones, virtual machines and beta operating systems are prohibited.
- Connection: the listed minimum is 6 Mbps download and 2 Mbps upload. VPNs and public, corporate or shared networks are prohibited.
- Room: you must be alone in a private space, with prohibited materials removed from reach. A quiet corner of a shared room is not a substitute for privacy.
- Rehearsal: run Pearson VUE's system test on the actual computer and network you intend to use before booking. A successful test on another device does not check your exam setup.
Treat these as separate checks. Meeting the connection speed does not establish that the network is permitted, and passing the software test does not establish that your room meets the rules. If either condition remains unresolved, compare test-center options before paying.
When is a test center the better fit?
A test center is the stronger choice when you cannot satisfy the online conditions consistently. Online delivery may suit you when the setup checks pass and travel would make an otherwise suitable appointment difficult. The decision below is practical advice based on the delivery requirements, not a prediction of your score.
| Your situation | Decision to make before booking |
|---|---|
| Someone may enter your testing room | Choose a center unless you can secure a private, uninterrupted space. |
| Your only connection is a corporate or shared network | Do not book online using that connection; find a permitted setup or a center. |
| Your computer cannot complete the system test | Resolve the failure and repeat the test before selecting online delivery. |
| You have a suitable room and tested equipment, but travel is difficult | Compare online appointments with center locations and the journey you can manage. |
| You need an accommodation or a particular break arrangement | Confirm the approved arrangement and delivery mode before making the choice. |
| You are unsure whether your ID is acceptable | Check the policy for the chosen mode; online and center instructions must be read separately. |
Before comparing appointment slots, check which exam code you intend to study for. The CySA+ objectives and version guide helps you identify the published scope; confirm the actual code and language in the booking system.
Once the mode is settled, preparation can follow the content areas: full CompTIA CySA+ prep planned for launch is organized around four domains.
How do ID and check-in rules differ?
For online testing, Pearson VUE currently requires a government-issued ID that is recognizable and matches the booking name. Some IDs, including U.S. military IDs and Common Access Cards, are restricted from online capture. Do not assume an ID is acceptable merely because it was issued by the government.
The timing instructions also differ, as checked November 3, 2026:
- OnVUE: begin check-in 30 minutes before the appointment. The process includes photographs of you and your ID, plus a room scan.
- Test center: the CompTIA Candidate Information document recommends arriving 15 minutes early. Follow the current appointment confirmation if it gives more specific instructions.
The center document points to a separate ID policy. Check that policy for the required number and types of identification; do not transfer the online ID requirements to an in-person appointment. If the name on your account and ID differs, resolve the mismatch through the testing provider before exam day.
Save the appointment details where you can find them, then plan either your check-in setup or your journey. The CySA+ exam-day checklist for 2027 turns those decisions into checks close to the appointment.
What can you use for notes and breaks?
Online testing provides access to a digital whiteboard; that does not permit paper notes or scratch paper. You must stay in camera view unless an explicitly approved break applies. The current OnVUE information does not establish a guaranteed CySA+ break, so do not plan to leave the room midway through the exam without approval.
For a center appointment, check the current permitted-materials and break instructions before you arrive. Personal items are excluded from the testing area under the candidate instructions. Ask which writing materials, if any, are supplied or permitted rather than bringing your own based on another exam's rules.
A useful preparation step is to try the 20 free CySA+ practice questions without reference materials and note when you want to write something down. This is an editorial practice exercise, not a reproduction of OnVUE or a test-center interface. Confirm the approved way to record working notes before relying on it.
For a longer practice set, full CompTIA CySA+ prep planned for launch includes an 85-question mock exam. Keep the rehearsal's purpose clear: practice answering and managing your attention, while learning the actual delivery rules from Pearson VUE.
How should you handle technical or appointment problems?
During an online exam, the in-exam chat connects you to the proctor, but it cannot pause or extend the exam. If you lose the connection, follow the instructions displayed by OnVUE. Do not assume that a technical interruption automatically means extra time or a replacement appointment.
Before the exam, resolve setup problems while you can still make an informed booking decision. Failure to meet online requirements can put the exam fee at risk.
If you need an accommodation, request it before booking. Pearson VUE's CompTIA accommodation process says accommodations cannot be added to an already scheduled exam. These steps were checked November 5, 2026:
- Start the request. Use the Reasonable Adjustments Request System; new users create an account with an active email address.
- Prepare documentation. Share the relevant evaluator guideline with the professional supplying your diagnostic report or detailed letter, and follow the request instructions.
- Upload and submit. Upload supporting documentation at the final step, explicitly submit the request and save the submission email.
- Read the decision. The decision email directs you to the determination letter in step 6, My Documents. If approved, follow its scheduling instructions.
Each request is considered individually. Allow 10 business days for review; this is a review allowance, not guaranteed approval or a universal booking deadline. Confirm the approved delivery mode. If you have already booked, seek provider instructions before assuming that appointment can be converted.
Scheduling, rescheduling and cancellation start through CompTIA Central. Check the deadline and consequences in your appointment confirmation, and contact support when anything is unclear. The older candidate document describes different change conditions, including separate accommodation-related notice; it should not be reduced to one universal deadline for every booking.
Use the CySA+ registration timeline for 2027 to separate choosing a mode, selecting an appointment and confirming the booking. Buying a voucher by itself does not reserve the appointment.
What should you verify before choosing a mode?
Complete one short decision check before committing:
- Confirm the exam. Match the code and language in the booking system to the material you are studying.
- Prove the setup. For online delivery, run the system test and separately check room privacy, network restrictions and ID suitability. For a center, check the location, route and mode-specific instructions.
- Resolve exceptions. Confirm accommodations, permitted materials and any approved break arrangement with the provider.
- Read the booking conditions. Check the appointment time, check-in instructions and change deadline before finalizing.
- Protect study time. Use the free CySA+ study plan to organize the preparation remaining before your chosen date.
Then return to the four-domain CySA+ objectives map and identify which skills need work. For that practice, full CompTIA CySA+ prep planned for launch includes 1,350 questions.
Your next action is concrete: test the intended online setup or inspect a suitable center's appointment instructions. Choose the mode only after you can explain how you will meet its requirements.
