Cosmetology Written Exam Day: ID, Prohibited Items, and Proctor Rules

The rules NIC applies in every theory exam room, the ID and arrival rules of the main exam providers, what ends a session early, and a checklist for the week before, the night before, and the morning of the cosmetology written exam.

Short answer

NIC's theory bulletin bans phones, watches of any kind, other electronic devices, printed materials, notes, bags, coats, and hats from the exam room, and you need permission and a picture ID to leave and come back. Your exam provider adds its own rules: most providers checked for this guide ask you to arrive 30 minutes early, refuse admission after the start time, and require ID that matches your registration exactly. Arriving late or with the wrong ID usually means losing the exam fee.

The NIC theory exam room rules

If your state uses the NIC National Cosmetology Theory Examination, its bulletin (effective July 1, 2022, revised January 1, 2026, and still current as of October 28, 2026) sets a short list of rules that apply wherever the exam is given:

  • Leaving the room: you may not leave the exam area without permission, for any reason, including a restroom break or finishing the exam. You need picture ID to get back in.
  • Proctors: apart from reading instructions, proctors and staff are not allowed to speak with candidates. If you have an emergency, raise your hand.
  • Prohibited items: cell phones, watches of any kind, pagers, tablets, computers, projectors, cameras, any other electronic or recording device, printed materials, and handwritten notes.
  • Personal items: purses, bags, coats, hats, and anything else you do not need for the exam.
  • Conduct: no talking to other candidates or examiners and no disruptive behavior.

NIC says the list is not exhaustive. The consequence is spelled out: breaking these conditions, or any behavior that suggests an attempt to cheat, means immediate dismissal and a report "to the proper authorities."

Why "watches of any kind" matters

The phrase covers a plain analog watch, not only a smartwatch. PSI's California bulletin says the same thing in different words: no watches or other timekeeping devices in the testing room, because timing mechanisms are provided in the room and on the computer. Wisconsin's handbook goes further and lists car keys and fobs among the items to leave at home or locked in your vehicle. Take your watch off before you leave the house, or leave it in the car with your phone. Finding it on your wrist at the check-in desk is a stressful way to start.

If you normally pace yourself by your watch, practice without it. You can rehearse a watch-free 90-minute sitting with the mock exam planned for launch, or simply time your practice sets with a clock you cannot see from your desk.

ID and arrival rules by exam provider

NIC's bulletin covers the exam room. Admission rules come from whoever runs your exam. These examples were checked on October 28, 2026:

Provider and stateID you needArrival and lateness
Prometric/D.L. Roope, Wisconsin (NIC exam)A printed admission letter, since electronic copies are not accepted, plus two IDs: a current government photo ID with signature, and a secondary ID. First and last names must match the admission letterReport 30 minutes early. Late candidates are not admitted and must reapply and pay again
PSI, CaliforniaA valid government-issued photo ID whose name matches your Board record "IDENTICALLY letter for letter," including middle name versus middle initialArrive at least 30 minutes early. Late arrivals may not be admitted and may lose the fee
PSI, Texas (test center)One valid government ID showing printed name, photo, signature or fingerprint, date of birth, and expiration date. Passport cards are not acceptedArrive 30 minutes early. Late arrivals are not admitted and forfeit the fee
PSI, GeorgiaTwo IDs: a valid government-issued ID and a second ID with your signature and preprinted legal name, both matching your registrationArrive at least 30 minutes early. Late arrivals are not admitted and forfeit the fee
Pearson VUE, PennsylvaniaTwo current signature IDs, one a government-issued photo ID. Names and signatures must match exactly, and expired IDs get no grace periodArrive 30 minutes early. Late candidates are not allowed to test and the fee is not returned

The common thread is the name match. If your name changed after you applied, fix it before exam day. Wisconsin's handbook, for example, asks for legal documentation at least 10 calendar days before the exam so it can issue an updated admission letter.

What can end your session early

The rules above are not just paperwork. Each provider describes how a session ends before you finish:

  • NIC: immediate dismissal for prohibited items or any behavior that suggests cheating.
  • Prometric/D.L. Roope, Wisconsin: a cell phone may not be in the exam room even if it is turned off. A candidate found with one after the exam starts is dismissed and reported.
  • PSI California: possessing a prohibited item in the testing room invalidates your results. A restroom break longer than 5 minutes brings a proctor to check on you and a report to the Board, and only one candidate may be on a break at a time.
  • PSI Texas: PSI may pause or end an exam at any time. Its list of prohibited behavior includes reading questions aloud, leaving the room without approval, and capturing images of exam items.

Remote testing and breaks

Most written cosmetology exams in the states checked are taken at a test center, and PSI's California bulletin lists only in-person California sites. Some programs offer the written exam remotely: PSI in Texas, PSI's online proctor in Michigan, and Prov in Maine. The rules below come from PSI's Texas bulletin, and other vendors set their own. Remote rules are stricter about movement. No breaks are allowed during a remotely proctored exam, you may not leave the station, food and drink are not allowed, and you must keep your hands on or above the desk. PSI tells candidates who think they will need a break not to choose remote testing.

A cosmetology exam-day checklist

The week before

The night before

  • Check that the name on your ID matches your registration or admission letter exactly, middle name included.
  • Print anything your provider requires on paper. Wisconsin's admission letter is one example.
  • Confirm the address, the start time, and how long the drive takes at that hour.
  • Decide what stays in the car: phone, watch, bag, notes, and snacks.

The morning of

  • Dress in light layers. PSI California allows lightweight layers without pockets or hoods and keeps outerwear out of the room.
  • If you need medication during the exam, check your provider's rule first. PSI California allows medically necessary prescription drugs in a container labeled with your name and the drug, subject to inspection.
  • Plan to arrive 30 minutes before your appointment, or at the time your provider states.
  • Use the restroom before check-in. NIC requires permission to leave the room, and PSI's remote exams in Texas allow no breaks at all.

This list covers what the bulletins checked here require. Close to your date, the Test Day checklist in full cosmetology prep, planned for launch, gives you a calm list to follow. What the clock looks like once you sit down, including the pace per question, is in the exam format guide. Rescheduling windows and fees are in the scheduling guide, and if a missed or failed attempt sends you back to booking, the retake guide compares the rules by state.
