How Much the NSCA CSCS Exam Costs: Fees, Retakes and Whether Membership Pays Off

The NSCA CSCS costs $340 for members or $475 for non-members, and $250 or $385 to retake one section. Here are the worked totals with and without membership, the optional NSCA study bundles, the fees you can avoid, and what recertification costs later.

Short answer

The NSCA CSCS exam costs $475 for non-members or $340 for NSCA members, covering both sections, as checked on October 27, 2026. Retaking one section costs $250 for members or $385 for non-members; retaking both costs $340 or $475. Membership saves $135 on the exam and costs $70 a year for full-time students or $130 for professionals, so it clearly pays for students and roughly breaks even for others before any study-material discounts. A 120-day extension costs $100, and withdrawing costs a $50 fee.

The fee you see first, $475, is only the non-member price for one passing attempt. What the NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) exam really costs you depends on three choices: whether you join NSCA, whether you buy NSCA's study materials, and whether you need to retake a section.

NSCA CSCS fees as of October 27, 2026

NSCA's CSCS page, its registration FAQ and the NSCA Certification Handbook list these fees:

FeeNSCA memberNon-member
Full exam, both sections (required for first-time candidates)$340$475
Retake of both sections$340$475
Retake of one section$250$385
Extra 120-day testing window$100$100
Withdrawal (deducted from your refund)$50$50
No-show, or late and not admittedFull fee lostFull fee lost

Two points from the handbook are easy to miss. First-time candidates must register for the full exam, so you can't split the first attempt into two cheaper sections. And "Retakes are not discounted": the one-section price is simply the price of a smaller exam.

NSCA takes Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover, plus promo codes and vouchers at checkout. If your employer or school is paying, NSCA's FAQ says it may need to buy a single-use or bulk voucher; email exams@nsca.com for third-party billing.

Does NSCA membership pay off for the CSCS?

NSCA says membership is not required to earn any of its certifications. It does cut $135 from every CSCS exam and section-retake fee. NSCA's membership page listed these prices on October 27, 2026:

  • Student: $70 a year, for full-time high school, undergraduate or graduate students, with self-verification
  • Professional: $130 a year
  • CPI: $371 a year, which adds liability insurance and isn't needed to take the exam

Here is the arithmetic for common situations (Passy's math from NSCA's listed prices):

ScenarioNon-memberStudent memberProfessional member
Exam only, pass both sections first time$475$410 ($70 + $340)$470 ($130 + $340)
Exam plus a one-section retake$860$660$720
Exam plus NSCA's Essential Collection$821$683$743

For a full-time student, membership saves $65 on the exam alone. For everyone else it saves $5 on a single attempt, and more if a retake or NSCA study materials enter the picture. A membership bought on October 27, 2026 showed a term through October 26, 2027, so one year of membership can cover both a first attempt and a retake inside NSCA's one-year window. Members also get journal access and up to 12 complimentary CEU quizzes, which matter after you're certified. Member pricing on study materials applies to NSCA's own products, so if you plan to study with other materials, check what full CSCS prep will include before checkout opens.

Optional NSCA study materials and their prices

The CSCS page says exam preparation materials aren't included with registration, and NSCA states that it "does not require, provide, or endorse any specific study guides, preparation materials, or review courses." NSCA's CSCS preparation page prices its own two bundles:

NSCA bundleContentsMemberNon-member
Essential CollectionEssentials of Strength Training and Conditioning (5th ed.), study guide, Practical/Applied and Scientific Foundations quizzes and tests$273$346
Platinum CollectionEverything in the Essential Collection, plus the Online Study Course and the Exercise Technique Manual$500$595

NSCA also runs CSCS Exam Prep Live Clinics, online and in person; the pages checked don't list clinic prices. Before you add a bundle to the bill, it's worth deciding how you'll practice exam-style questions. You can see the planned one-time prices for full CSCS prep, from $19.99; checkout isn't open yet, and the 20 free CSCS practice questions already work.

Costs outside NSCA's fee table

A few costs come from other places, and NSCA doesn't set them:

  • CPR/AED. Your course must include a hands-on skills assessment, so an online-only course without a skills check won't count. Prices depend on the provider.
  • Transcripts. Your school may charge to send an official or electronic transcript.
  • Travel. The CSCS is given only at Pearson VUE test centers; online proctoring is available for the TSAC-F exam alone. The handbook says NSCA isn't responsible for travel or hotel costs if weather or a closure cancels your appointment.

How to avoid losing your CSCS exam fee

Apart from failing a section, the easiest way to lose money is the 120-day authorization window. The handbook and FAQ set these rules:

  1. Test within 120 days of registering. If you can't, withdraw or buy the $100 extension, or you forfeit the registration fee. The extension must be requested during the original window.
  2. Reschedule at least 24 hours ahead. Changes through Pearson VUE are free inside the window if made at least one business day before the appointment. No confirmation email means the change didn't go through, and you may be recorded as a no-show.
  3. Withdraw in writing, early enough. Email exams@nsca.com at least three business days before your 120 days end. NSCA allows a withdrawal only if you haven't scheduled, taken or missed the exam, and refunds the fee minus $50. Canceling the Pearson VUE appointment alone doesn't refund anything.
  4. Arrive on time with matching ID. Arriving more than 15 minutes late means testing only at the center's discretion. Your ID's first and last name must exactly match your registration, and candidates without acceptable ID are recorded as no-shows. Either way, testing later means paying the full fee again.
  5. Contact NSCA within one business day in an emergency. If the center is open but weather or an emergency keeps you away, contact NSCA within one business day to avoid a no-show, and be ready to document it.

What a CSCS retake adds to the bill

If you pass one section, you pay only for the other: $250 as a member or $385 as a non-member. If you fail both, the retake costs the same as the first exam. You must wait at least 30 days after your last attempt before you can even register for the retake, and that registration starts a new 120-day window. The one-section retake guide covers the one-year deadline and how to plan the second attempt.

CSCS fees after you pass: recertification

Certification isn't a one-time purchase. NSCA recertification runs on a fixed three-year cycle, and the current one ends on December 31, 2026. NSCA's Stay Certified page prorates the CEUs and the fee by your certification date:

CertifiedCEUsMember feeNon-member fee
Before 20246.0$65$90
During 20244.0$55$80
During 20252.0$45$70
January 1 to June 30, 20261.0$35$60
July 1 to December 31, 20260$0$0

If you certify in 2027, you'll fall into the next cycle, whose CEU and fee table wasn't posted on the pages checked on October 27, 2026. If a certification lapses but you kept earning the required CEUs, the handbook lists a $200 reinstatement fee, plus any unpaid recertification fees.

Budgeting your CSCS attempt

A realistic budget for a non-member who passes first time is $475 plus a CPR/AED course and any study materials. For a full-time student who joins NSCA, the exam portion drops to $410. Once you know your likely test month, match a planned access period to your test date and check that the eligibility side is in order in the CSCS requirements guide.
