ANCC FNP-BC Renewal Requirements: CE, Practice and the New Framework

Understand the five-year FNP-BC renewal cycle, the 75 CE hours including 25 in pharmacology, and which professional-development framework applies to your submission.

Short answer

ANCC FNP-BC certification uses a five-year renewal cycle, with 75 continuing education contact hours including 25 in pharmacology, plus additional professional development. Renewal applications submitted on or after February 1, 2027 follow ANCC's new handbook; earlier submissions follow the current handbook, as checked November 3, 2026. Choose the handbook by your application submission date, complete its qualifying requirements before submitting, and apply before certification expires.

When does FNP-BC certification expire?

ANCC FNP-BC certification follows a five-year renewal cycle, requiring 75 continuing education contact hours, including 25 in pharmacology, plus additional professional development. ANCC requires qualifying activities within the current certification period and an application before expiration, under the rules checked November 3, 2026.

Start with the dates on your own certification record. Renewal requires an active RN license and current renewable certification; completing courses alone does not complete the renewal process. ANCC allows submission up to one year before expiration, but the activities you claim must already be complete when you submit.

If you first become certified in 2027, the February 2027 handbook change does not mean you owe an immediate renewal. Use your own certification period to organize records, then recheck the rules that apply when your renewal approaches. Today's published framework is not a promise that every requirement will stay the same throughout your career.

For initial-exam candidates, the FNP-BC exam content outline guides review, and full FNP-BC prep planned for launch includes 1,400 questions across five domains. Exam prep is not renewal CE credit.

Which renewal handbook applies to your application?

The deciding date is when you submit the renewal application. ANCC's renewal page confirms the February 1, 2027 transition, checked November 3, 2026.

When you submitHandbook to useBasic structure
Before February 1, 2027Current renewal handbookMandatory 75 CE hours plus completion of at least one of eight professional-development categories
On or after February 1, 2027February 2027 renewal handbookMandatory 75 approved/accredited CE hours plus one complete activity in one professional-development pathway

Both frameworks include 25 pharmacology hours within the mandatory 75 for an FNP-BC renewing certification. The change reorganizes the additional professional-development choices; it does not remove the mandatory CE requirement.

For example, an eligible nurse who submits in January 2027 uses the current handbook. An eligible nurse who submits on February 1, 2027 uses the new handbook. Looking only at the certification's expiration year would miss that distinction. These examples illustrate ANCC's announced transition, not a recommendation to rush an incomplete application.

Before selecting activities, open the handbook for your submission date. Its renewal rules are separate from the initial examination covered in the FNP-BC content outline guide.

How do 75 CE hours and 25 pharmacology hours fit together?

The pharmacology hours are included in the 75-hour total. They are not another 25 hours added on top. The following accounting example shows how that works:

Qualifying CE completedContact hours
Nonpharmacology CE50
Pharmacology CE25
Mandatory CE total75

This example totals 75, not 100. When a course awards both overall CE and a pharmacology portion, record the overall total once and identify the pharmacology portion separately. Do not add the same pharmacology hours twice.

Approval requirements also matter. The current handbook requires at least 60 of the mandatory 75 hours to be formally approved. The February 2027 handbook requires 75 approved/accredited CE hours. Those are the respective handbook requirements checked November 3, 2026; do not carry the current 60-hour provision into an application governed by the new framework.

If you choose the additional-CE professional-development option, you need another 75 qualifying hours. That makes 150 CE hours overall: the mandatory 75, including the pharmacology component, plus the additional 75. Meeting the mandatory total alone does not also complete the additional-CE option.

For initial-exam recall, see the pharmacology study guide and 600 flashcards planned for launch as part of full FNP-BC prep; these are study resources, not awarded CE.

What additional professional development must you complete?

Under the current handbook, complete one of the eight professional-development categories in addition to the mandatory CE. Check the current renewal handbook for the full conditions of the category you select.

For applications submitted on or after February 1, 2027, the new handbook groups the choices into three pathways. You need one complete qualifying activity in one pathway, not every item below.

New pathwayOptions described in the February 2027 handbook
Additional continuing educationAnother 75 approved/accredited CE contact hours
Practice1,000 relevant nursing-practice hours, or 120 preceptorship hours, or 120 volunteer-service hours
ScholarshipQualifying evidence-based practice/quality-improvement project, presentation, publication or research activity

These options and thresholds were checked November 3, 2026. Each has qualifying conditions in the February 2027 handbook. Read those conditions before counting an activity: the table does not mean that any volunteer work, informal presentation or project automatically qualifies.

The 1,000 nursing-practice hours are one option within the practice pathway. They are not a universal requirement added to every other pathway. Similarly, choosing practice or scholarship does not replace the mandatory 75 CE hours.

Pick the activity you can complete and document in full. Do not assume that partial completion of several options adds up to a completed pathway. If your role or activity is an edge case, ask ANCC about its fit before relying on it for renewal.

What does a completed renewal evidence log look like?

ANCC requires supporting documentation for renewal activities. This filled log is an editorial recordkeeping example, not an ANCC form. Course bundles and providers A and B are fictional placeholders. Assume both completion dates fall within the nurse's current certification period and all hours have qualifying approval/accreditation. For real courses, verify the provider's actual approval statement and retain it with the certificate.

Fictional course bundle BSeptember 9, 2026Provider B placeholder3510Qualifying approval assumed for this example; verify actual provider statementCertificate B
Totals7525

The total is 40 + 35 = 75 CE hours. The pharmacology portion is 15 + 10 = 25 of those same hours. Adding all four numbers would incorrectly produce 100. This log accounts for the mandatory CE only; the nurse still needs a complete additional professional-development activity.

For a submission governed by the February 2027 handbook, compare these two hypothetical completed routes. In both, assume all activities occurred within the current certification period, were completed before submission, and satisfy the applicable handbook conditions.

Completed routeMandatory CE recordSeparate professional-development recordWhat the totals mean
Additional CEBundles A and B: 75 approved/accredited hours, including 25 pharmacologyAnother completed block of 75 approved/accredited CE hours, with separate certificates and approval evidence retained150 total CE hours; the original 75 are not counted again as the additional block
Nursing practiceBundles A and B: 75 approved/accredited hours, including 25 pharmacology1,000 relevant nursing-practice hours completed, with the activity's qualifying conditions checked and supporting evidence retained75 CE hours plus one complete practice activity; practice hours are not CE hours

The nursing-practice route is optional, not an extra requirement for everyone. Check the full conditions in the February 2027 handbook, including what qualifies for your selected activity and how to document it. These examples organize evidence; they do not determine whether ANCC will accept an actual renewal application.

To build your own record:

  1. Save your certification dates. Put the beginning and expiration of the current period beside your planned submission date.
  2. Enter completed CE once. Record each activity's title, date, provider, total hours, included pharmacology hours and approval evidence. Save its certificate.
  3. Keep the additional activity separate. Record the complete category or pathway activity and retain the documentation its handbook requests.
  4. Check the period and completion dates. Do this before submitting, while there is time to resolve missing evidence.

What should you check before submitting renewal?

Recheck ANCC's official renewal page when you are ready to submit, even if you began planning under the rules checked November 3, 2026. Confirm these items:

  • Your dates: you are within the permitted early-submission period and applying before expiration.
  • Your handbook: its effective rule matches your actual application submission date.
  • Your standing: you meet the active RN license and current-certification requirements.
  • Your CE: the mandatory total, pharmacology component and approval requirements are satisfied without double-counting.
  • Your additional activity: one category or pathway activity is complete, qualifies under the applicable handbook and has supporting evidence.

The February 2027 handbook provides no grace period or backdating. Leave time to resolve missing evidence before expiration; do not plan around a presumed extension. Consult ANCC directly if certification has already expired rather than applying the active-renewal checklist to that situation.

For initial candidates, the 20 free FNP-BC practice questions and free study plan support exam review; results and certification steps cover the first credential. For longer practice, a 175-question mock exam is planned for launch as part of full FNP-BC prep. These resources are not renewal CE.

For renewal, your next action is to note your credential's expiration date, select the handbook for your submission date, and compare your documented activities with one complete qualifying route.
