HiSET Cost in 2027: Build Your Test and Retake Budget
Build a 2027 HiSET budget using current state fee examples, subsidy limits, retake charges and a worksheet to update before you pay.
Short answer
There is no single national HiSET price to use for a 2027 budget: fees and funding depend on your state and testing format. Iowa lists $90 for five first-attempt subtests at a center or $205 at home, while Massachusetts covers the first test plus two retakes per subtest per lifetime, under current rules checked November 3, 2026. These are current planning examples, not confirmed 2027 prices; verify your eligibility, available format and remaining fee coverage before paying.
Why is there no single national HiSET price for 2027?
HiSET cost depends on your state and testing format: PSI's Iowa page lists a five-subtest first-attempt total of $90 at a center or $205 at home, checked November 3, 2026. Its Massachusetts page describes state funding for the first test plus two retakes per subtest per lifetime, showing why another candidate's bill may not match yours.
Use those figures to understand the calculation, not to assume what your 2027 appointment will cost. The sources reviewed here establish current fees and rules; they do not establish a guaranteed 2027 price schedule. Start with your jurisdiction in the official HiSET state directory, then read the linked state page's current notices, fees and funding conditions.
Before comparing prices, confirm that the test and format you want are available. The HiSET versus GED guide explains how state offerings affect that choice. A directory listing alone is not enough to confirm that a particular testing option is still open.
How do you calculate the five-subtest total?
Build the total from each subtest's charge and any separately listed proctor or center charge. Do not multiply a headline fee until you know what it includes. For a first attempt at all five subtests, Iowa provides a clear worked example.
The following Iowa fees were checked November 3, 2026. The state's table assumes no retakes and completion within a single calendar year; confirm the current amount before a 2027 booking.
| Iowa testing format | Test fee per subtest | Remote proctor fee per subtest | Five-subtest calculation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper or computer at a center | $18 | Not applicable | 5 × $18 = $90 |
| At home | $18 | $23 | 5 × ($18 + $23) = $205 |
The at-home calculation includes a proctor charge for each subtest. A single remote-proctor payment does not cover all five. These are Iowa figures from its official requirements page, not a price range for every state.
Keep your own worksheet by subject, especially if you have already completed part of the exam. Use the guide to the five HiSET subtests to check that your list includes Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies.
| Your 2027 budget entry | What to record |
|---|---|
| Target appointment | State, subject, format and intended 2027 date |
| First-attempt charges | The current total for each subtest you still need |
| Confirmed funding | What the state or program covers for you personally |
| Retake reserve | Any test, proctor or center charge that would remain |
| Personal expenses | Your own estimates for travel, childcare or optional study materials |
| Verification | Date checked, official source and any written clarification |
Add the charges you actually expect to pay, your chosen reserve and your personal estimates. Keep an unknown amount marked “confirm”; entering zero can hide an unresolved expense. Personal expenses are budgeting suggestions, not HiSET fees.
If you want to compare optional study resources, full HiSET prep planned for launch includes 1,150 questions across the five subtests. Check its availability and price separately before treating it as a committed part of your 2027 budget.
When can state funding cover the fee?
The HiSET can be free or discounted for some candidates, and the routes verified here are state programs. Tennessee's voucher program covers all exam costs for residents who qualify, while Minnesota's code takes off $40 at most, so these routes differ from state to state.
These examples come from PSI's state pages, checked November 6, 2026 unless marked. They are current observations, not 2027 offers, and they are not a list of every state's funding.
| State | Route | Who the page names | Limit to note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tennessee | State voucher program that covers all exam costs; vouchers come through a local adult education program | Tennessee residents who demonstrate test preparedness through a qualifying official practice test | No required score is stated |
| New Mexico | Voucher codes from the State Office or an adult education provider | New Mexico residents are told to check for codes | Eligibility for a code is not described |
| Minnesota | Code MNHISET8 takes $8 off each subject the first time, $40 at most | Testers paying for themselves with a Minnesota address | Not for retakes; funding is not guaranteed |
| Massachusetts (checked November 3, 2026) | State covers the first test plus two retakes per subtest per lifetime, using subject-specific promo codes | Massachusetts residency is required | Confirm which funded attempts remain for each subject before checkout |
Each code or voucher shown above applies only to its own state, so enter a code or voucher in your Confirmed funding row only after your own state page or program confirms it. The Minnesota and Montana pages say fees increased in 2026, so an older figure may be out of date.
Separately from these state routes, PSI's Opportunity Pathways offered vouchers and scholarships, and applications were closed when checked November 6, 2026. Leave it out of your budget unless PSI's page shows an open application.
In Massachusetts, “per lifetime” matters if you tested before 2027. Starting a new calendar year does not restore previously used funding. Record previous attempts separately for each subject so you can ask about the correct remaining coverage.
Testing availability also affects the budget. As checked November 3, 2026, Massachusetts says new online-proctored appointments are not currently available, although already registered remote candidates may take their existing bookings. Do not build a new at-home booking plan from older wording elsewhere on the page. Recheck its current notice when choosing a 2027 appointment.
Funding is separate from preparation. Try the 20 free HiSET practice questions before deciding what additional study resources you need. For a broader set, full HiSET prep planned for launch includes 500 flashcards; their planned status does not make them an available resource today.
What can a retake still cost?
A covered test fee does not always remove every retake charge. In Iowa, two retakes may be available within the 12 months following the first attempt, but an at-home retake still carries the $23 proctor fee, under the rules checked November 3, 2026. For one eligible remote retake, that recurring charge alone adds $23 to your budget; confirm whether anything else is payable for your case.
Keep three questions separate when budgeting across the start of 2027:
- Are you allowed another attempt? Iowa and Massachusetts each currently limit a subtest to three attempts per calendar year.
- Does fee coverage still apply? Iowa's retake window is measured from the first attempt, while Massachusetts describes lifetime coverage per subtest.
- What charges remain? Ask specifically about proctor and center charges rather than asking only whether a retake is “free.”
These are current state examples checked November 3, 2026, not a national retake rule or a guarantee for 2027. A calendar-year attempt allowance, a rolling fee window and a lifetime subsidy count different things. Moving into 2027 does not make all three start over.
Record the original attempt date alongside the subject and funding already used. Then use the HiSET retake-policy guide to work through the scheduling questions. Having money reserved does not establish that a new attempt is permitted.
What should you reconfirm before your 2027 payment?
Use three budget checkpoints: when you set your intended 2027 test date, before paying for each appointment, and before paying for any retake. These are suggested planning checkpoints, not official deadlines.
At each payment checkpoint, confirm your state eligibility, the available format, the full amount due and any funding code or remaining entitlement. Compare the final charge with your worksheet. If it differs, resolve the difference before paying instead of assuming the older figure still applies.
Use the free HiSET study plan to organize preparation around the subjects still open. If you are considering a larger question set, full HiSET prep planned for launch is organized by the five subtests, so you can assess whether its planned scope fits your study needs.
Your next step is to complete one worksheet row for your first intended 2027 subtest. Verify that row against your current state page and booking information, then repeat for the other subjects. Keep the current fee, your personal reserve and any unresolved amount separate until the charge is confirmed.
