ASWB Masters Online Practice Test: What You Get and When to Take It

ASWB sells one official online practice test for the Masters exam. Here is what the US$85 purchase includes, how its access window works, and when to take it so you have time to use the review.

Short answer

ASWB sells one official online practice test for the Masters exam for US$85, and only candidates already registered for the exam can buy it. The 2026 guidebook describes it as a full-scale, 122-question test made of retired exam questions, with rationales for each answer. You get a four-hour timer and one complete attempt, and access lasts 30 days from launch or until ASWB receives your exam score, whichever comes first. Take it after a first pass through the content, early enough to act on the review.

What the purchase includes

These details come from the 2026 ASWB guidebook and ASWB's practice test pages, checked October 17, 2026:

  • Price: US$85. You can add it when you register for the exam, or buy it later.
  • Who can buy it: only people registered for the exam. You need the number on your Authorization to Test email.
  • Length: the guidebook calls it a "full-scale, 122-question" test, the same length as the current exam. Some older descriptions online give a different length. The 2026 guidebook is the current ASWB source.
  • Questions: actual retired exam questions, according to the guidebook.
  • Time and attempts: a four-hour timer and one complete attempt. The guidebook adds that you can check in and out of the test during your access period.
  • Review: after you finish, you see your score and can review every question with its answer and rationale, either by content area or only the ones you missed.
  • Access: 30 days from the moment you launch it, or until ASWB receives your exam score, whichever comes first.

Candidates approved for extra time as a nonstandard testing arrangement can take the practice test with standard time, time and a half, or double time, according to the guidebook.

Three limits worth knowing before you buy

There is only one version. ASWB's own page says so, and its purchase screen warns you if you already bought it. A second purchase gives you the same questions again.

The format is not identical to the real exam. ASWB says the practice test format does not exactly match the exam as delivered at Pearson test centers. Use it for content and pacing, not as a rehearsal of every screen.

The score is a signal, not a prediction. Neither the guidebook nor ASWB's practice test pages present the practice score as a forecast of your exam result. On the real exam, ASWB says the number of correct answers needed varies with the difficulty of each form. The LMSW passing score guide explains how that works.

When to take it

Because the clock starts when you launch, the timing decision is really about the review. A Passy rule of thumb: take it after one full pass through the content outline, about two weeks before your exam date. That is late enough for the score to reflect real study and early enough to repair what it shows.

Here is one way to place it in a 10-week plan:

  1. Weeks 1 to 7: a first pass through all three Masters content areas, using the outline and your course notes.
  2. Start of week 8: launch the practice test and take it in one timed sitting, with no notes and no interruptions. The LMSW exam format guide covers the real timing.
  3. Week 8: review every rationale, including questions you got right for the wrong reason.
  4. Week 9: targeted review of the weakest content area.
  5. Week 10: mixed practice, light review, and exam day.

Launching too early wastes the review window on content you have not studied. Launching in the final week leaves no time to act on what you learn, and access ends once ASWB has your exam score.

How to use the review

Sort every miss into one of four reasons:

  • Content gap: you did not know the material.
  • Qualifier miss: you answered a different question than FIRST, NEXT, BEST, or MOST asked.
  • Second-guess: you changed a correct answer.
  • Pacing: you rushed late in a section.

Content gaps go back into your study plan by content area. The other three are skill problems, and the LMSW study guide shows how to schedule both kinds.

Where Passy fits

ASWB's practice test is built from retired ASWB questions. Passy's 20 free LMSW practice questions are original and are a different tool: use them during your first content pass, before you spend the one ASWB attempt. After the official test, you can run the same 20 LMSW questions again as a quick reasoning check, and take the areas your ASWB review flagged back to the guidebook's reference lists.
