Can You Take the LMSW Exam Before You Graduate?

ASWB policy lets licensing boards approve MSW students in their final semester for the Masters exam, but your board decides. Here is how the approval works and what to ask before you apply.

Short answer

Sometimes. ASWB's policy manual allows licensing boards to approve MSW students in their final semester to take the Masters exam, but each board decides whether to do so. ASWB registers you only after your board approves you, or, in Colorado, Maine, Texas, and Utah, after ASWB's own exam preapproval. Before you apply, ask your board whether it accepts final-semester applicants and what proof it wants, such as a letter from your program.

What ASWB's policy allows

ASWB's policy manual describes what each exam category is for. For the Masters exam, it says boards may approve candidates who are in their final semester of the MSW program. The posted version of that section is labeled 1.2022. It was the most recent version Passy could find on ASWB's site on October 17, 2026.

The key word is may. The policy permits final-semester testing. It does not require any board to offer it. A 2020 ASWB article on exam use described final-semester testing as an approved waiver category and said boards generally ask for a letter from the program director confirming that the student is in good standing and on track to graduate.

Who approves you to test

The 2026 ASWB guidebook is clear about the order. You apply for a license with your state or provincial board, the board decides whether you are eligible, and only then can you register and pay with ASWB. ASWB's FAQ adds that you cannot register until ASWB has your board's approval.

The guidebook names one exception to that order. In Colorado, Maine, Texas, and Utah, applicants first apply for exam preapproval with ASWB Licensing Services, and then apply to the state board after passing. ASWB's Texas preapproval page shows how final-semester testing can work in practice: for the LMSW, it accepts an official transcript or a dean's letter if the applicant is in the last semester.

Board rules change, so this page does not try to list which boards accept final-semester applicants. Your board's website, or a call to the board, is the reliable answer. How to register for the LMSW exam covers the full board, ASWB, and Pearson sequence.

What to ask your board before you apply

  1. Do you approve final-semester MSW students for the Masters exam? Ask specifically about the Masters category.
  2. What proof do you need? A letter from the program director or dean, an expected graduation date, or something else.
  3. When do you need the final transcript? Ask whether the license is issued only after your degree is conferred, and what you need to send at that point.
  4. How long does approval take? You need it before you can register.
  5. Are there other requirements? Some boards require a separate state exam that ASWB does not administer, according to the guidebook.

Timing your exam around the semester

Once you are approved and registered, a few ASWB rules shape the calendar:

  • The Authorization to Test is good for one exam and up to one year. Your board may set an earlier expiration date. You can get no more than one extension of up to six months.
  • Schedule four to six weeks ahead to get the date and test center you want, as the guidebook recommends.
  • Nonstandard testing arrangements, including ESL extra time, must be requested and approved before you register. They cannot be added to an appointment that is already scheduled.
  • The ASWB fee for the Masters exam is US$230, and it is nonrefundable. Board fees are separate. LMSW exam cost lists the rest.

In a final semester, coursework and field hours compete for the same weeks. If your board allows final-semester testing, pick a test date that leaves you real study time rather than the first open slot. The free LMSW study plan can lay out the weeks once you have a date.

Which exam to ask about

The final-semester rule in ASWB's policy covers the Masters exam for MSW students and the Bachelors exam for BSW students. The Clinical exam is built for people with a master's degree plus two years of clinical experience, or what the jurisdiction defines as equivalent. The same policy lets boards approve Clinical candidates within six months of finishing their supervised experience, which is a different rule.
