What to Bring to the MBLEx: ID, Check-In and Test-Day Rules

Bring two original, unexpired IDs whose first and last names match your application and ATT, and arrive at least 30 minutes early. Everything else goes in a locker. Here are FSMTB's ID rules, the check-in steps, what you can and cannot take in, and the test-day rules that can end an attempt.

Short answer

Bring two forms of ID to the MBLEx: one primary, an original and unexpired government-issued photo ID such as a driver's license or passport, and one secondary with your name and signature, such as a signed Social Security card or bank card. First and last names must match your application and Authorization to Test exactly. Arrive at least 30 minutes before your appointment. Apart from your IDs and locker key, everything goes in a locker, and your phone stays off-limits for the whole visit.

The two IDs you need for the MBLEx

The MBLEx takes two forms of identification, not one. FSMTB's Candidate Handbook, effective September 17, 2026, requires one primary and one secondary ID, and the format and spelling of your name must match your MBLEx application, your Authorization to Test (ATT) and both IDs. If you have read that a single photo ID is enough, that is not the MBLEx rule.

IDWhat it must beExamples from the handbook
PrimaryOriginal, physical, valid, unexpired, government-issued, with your photo. If it has a signature line, it must be signedDriver's license or state ID card, passport or passport card, U.S. Certificate of Naturalization, military ID, Permanent Resident Card, Employment Authorization Document
SecondaryOriginal, valid, unexpired, with your name and your signatureSigned Social Security card, signed employee, work or school ID, signed credit, debit or ATM card, or a second primary-type ID that carries a signature
Not acceptedAnything that cannot reliably prove identityPhotocopies, screenshots, photos of an ID, printed DMV receipts, renewal paperwork, paper temporary licenses or IDs, expired IDs, IDs marked clipped, voided or invalid

Three details catch people out:

  • Names. First and last names must match exactly. Your middle name or initial is optional and will not stop you from testing.
  • Temporary licenses. Under the handbook, a temporary, limited-term, restricted or learner's credential counts only if it is an original physical photo card. Paper temporary documents do not count, even from a government agency.
  • Digital IDs. A digital driver's license on your phone is not accepted as standard practice. Pearson may accept a government digital ID only where local law requires it and Pearson has validated it.

FSMTB's FAQ still carries an older, stricter ID list. It says the primary ID must include a signature and that temporary or renewed driver's licenses are not acceptable, while the handbook accepts an unsigned primary ID that has no signature field and a temporary license issued as a physical photo card. The FAQ itself says the handbook supersedes it. The simplest way to avoid trouble is to bring IDs that meet both lists. If yours meets only the handbook's rules, or is borderline in any way, email mblex@fsmtb.org well before your appointment, because staff can refuse admission if they are not satisfied with your identity.

MBLEx check-in at the Pearson VUE test center

You must arrive at least 30 minutes before your appointment, by the report time on your Pearson confirmation. The handbook is blunt about lateness: a late arrival is not allowed to test, counts as a no-show, and your ATT expires. Getting a new one means a new application and fee.

Check-in includes a digital photograph and palm vein recognition, according to the handbook and FSMTB's Requirements & Process page. Once you begin, you may not leave the building during the exam.

Two more rules at the front desk:

  • No translators. Print, electronic and in-person translators are not allowed at any stage, including check-in, and staff cannot translate. If you cannot complete check-in without one, you will be turned away.
  • Staff help with procedure only. They can explain test-center rules, but they cannot answer questions about exam content or help with screen prompts, and they cannot approve accommodations on the day. Accommodations must be approved through your application.

What you can take into the MBLEx testing room

Only your two IDs and your locker key, unless FSMTB or Pearson has authorized something else. Lockers hold a small number of belongings, and FSMTB is not responsible for anything lost.

The handbook's prohibited list is long. In short, it bans:

  • Electronics. Phones, watches, calculators, cameras, recording or Bluetooth devices, USB drives, computers.
  • Paper and study items. Books, notes, paper, outlines, dictionaries, pens, pencils and erasers.
  • Bags and containers. Bags, wallets, purses, cups, containers, umbrellas and keys.
  • Food, drink and tobacco. Including snacks, gum, tobacco products and e-cigarettes, unless approved as an accommodation or allowed as a comfort aid.
  • Clothing and accessories. Hats, head coverings, coats, jackets, gloves, sunglasses, large jewelry, earplugs and personal headphones, unless test center rules permit them, they are approved as an accommodation or after inspection, or they are worn for religious or medical reasons as policy allows.
  • Weapons, including pocket knives.

Two consequences matter more than the list. First, cell phone access is prohibited at all times at the test center, breaks included. Second, having a prohibited item in the room, or opening your locker during the exam outside an approved break for something like medication, ends your exam with a failing result for an incomplete exam.

Pearson keeps a separate list of comfort aids that may be allowed without an accommodation, subject to inspection. A comfort aid is not an accommodation, and anything that changes standard testing conditions has to be requested on your application. Since jackets are on the banned list, dress in a layer you can keep on.

The first ten minutes of the MBLEx appointment

Your appointment lasts two hours. The handbook allows up to five minutes for the Security and Confidentiality Agreement and up to five for the MBLEx Information Survey, then 110 minutes for the 100 questions.

Do not write on the erasable note board during those first ten minutes. If you write on it before the timed exam begins, the proctor takes the board, escorts you out, and you must reapply and pay the full fee again. Wait until the first question is on screen.

What the MBLEx screen and clock allow

  • Question format. The ADA Supplement describes 100 multiple-choice items with three or four answer options each.
  • Display options for everyone. Under standard conditions, any candidate can enlarge the font up to 24 point and change the font color or background for contrast.
  • Answer in order. The MBLEx is a fixed-length adaptive test, and the handbook says you must answer each question in the order it is presented. Pearson's FSMTB page adds that flagging for later review is not permitted.
  • All 100 or fail. If you do not complete all 100 within 110 minutes, you fail.
  • Breaks run on your time. There are no scheduled breaks unless approved as an accommodation. You may take an unscheduled restroom or food break, but the clock does not stop, and the security check on the way back in, which uses biometric verification, is not added back.

At an even pace, 110 minutes for 100 questions is 66 seconds each. The guide to MBLEx difficulty explains why the adaptive format feels hard even when you are doing well. The only way to make that pace automatic is to sit full-length sets beforehand, which is what a timed 110-minute rehearsal planned for full MBLEx prep is for once it launches.

If something goes wrong during the MBLEx

  • Technical problem or disruption. Tell a proctor immediately, during the exam and before you leave. Then send FSMTB a written report at mblex@fsmtb.org within two business days of your exam date. The handbook makes both steps your responsibility.
  • Bad weather. Pearson decides whether a center closes. If it stays open, the exam is not rescheduled for weather. If Pearson cancels it, you get rescheduling instructions by email and pay no additional exam fee. Call Pearson at 888.790.4892 to check. FSMTB does not cover travel or lodging costs.
  • You cannot make it. Changes are possible up to 24 hours before the appointment, with Pearson's $50 fee inside 60 days of it. A no-show for any reason means reapplying.

When the MBLEx ends

If you pass, a congratulatory message appears on screen. If you fail, the test center gives you a diagnostic report on each content area. Either way, the state board on your application receives the official result from FSMTB within five business days. The MBLEx passing score guide explains how results work, and the guide to MBLEx retakes covers what to do after a fail, including how to work one content area at a time with the practice planned for full MBLEx prep.

Your MBLEx test-day checklist

The night before, check four things: both IDs are original, unexpired and signed where they have a signature line; the first and last names match your ATT; you know the report time on your Pearson confirmation; and you have a route that gets you there 30 minutes early. If any name or detail is off, contact FSMTB before the day, not at the desk.

For the weeks before, practice in sets you answer in order and on time. The 20 free MBLEx practice questions are a start, and for the final days you can look at the Test Day checklist planned for full MBLEx prep, which is being built and not yet on sale.
