How Much Does the NASM CPT Exam Cost?
NASM's exam-only option was $599 on October 17, 2026. Here is what that price covers, the other costs to budget for, and the rules that can add fees.
Short answer
As checked on October 17, 2026, NASM sells the NASM-CPT exam on its own for $599, as a one-time payment with no study materials included. You also need a current CPR/AED certification, which you pay a separate provider for. Retests, program extensions, late arrivals and recertification every two years each carry their own fees, posted on NASM's website.
The NASM CPT exam-only price
As checked on October 17, 2026, NASM's U.S. site lists the "NCCA-Accredited Certified Personal Trainer Exam" at $599.00, one-time payment. That buys the exam and nothing else:
- No study materials are included.
- You can take it at a PSI test center or with a live remote proctor.
- NASM recommends it for candidates with formal education or significant experience. The handbook gives athletic coaching or training as examples of related education.
NASM's handbook also confirms that you do not have to buy its preparation materials to sit for the exam, and that buying them does not guarantee a pass. The purchase date matters, because NASM requires you to take the exam within 180 days of buying it.
A NASM CPT cost worksheet
Use this worksheet to see the full cost, not just the headline price. Amounts other than the exam-only price are not filled in on purpose. NASM's handbook says its fees can change and refers you to its website for current amounts, and CPR/AED course prices depend on the provider.
| Cost | When it applies | Amount as checked on October 17, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Exam only | Always, unless a program includes the exam | $599 |
| Adult CPR and AED certification | Before exam day. You must show a current card at check-in | Set by the provider you choose |
| Program extension | If you need more than 180 days from purchase | Fee listed by NASM, not quoted here |
| Late Cancellation Fee | If you arrive late and must reschedule | Fee listed by NASM, not quoted here |
| Retest fee | Each retake, unless your program includes one | Fee listed by NASM, not quoted here |
| Rescoring request | Only if you ask for hand scoring. NASM may charge a fee | Not stated |
| Recertification fee | Every two years after you pass | Fee listed by NASM, not quoted here |
| Continuing education | 2.0 CEUs every two years | Varies by course |
Write in the current amounts from NASM's site on the day you buy. The eligibility guide explains which CPR/AED providers NASM names as examples.
NASM rules that can add cost before you pass
Most extra costs come from timing, not from failing. Four rules in NASM's handbook are worth knowing before you pay.
- The 180-day clock. You have 180 days from purchase to prepare, get your CPR/AED certification and take the exam. Running out means buying a program extension.
- The 24-hour change rule. You can cancel or reschedule only until 24 hours before your appointment. Miss that line and skip the exam, and the exam fee is forfeited. You then have to buy a retest.
- Late arrival. If you arrive late, you are not admitted. You must reschedule within 180 days of the original date and pay the Late Cancellation Fee.
- No-shows. A missed exam counts as a failed attempt, so you follow the retest procedure and pay accordingly.
NASM may waive the Late Cancellation Fee or forgive a missed exam for listed emergencies, such as serious illness or a death in the immediate family, if you send a letter with documentation postmarked within 10 business days. Registrations are also nontransferable. If NASM or PSI cancels your exam, you can reschedule within 180 days without a rescheduling fee, but NASM offers no refunds in that case and does not cover travel costs. The scheduling guide walks through the 24-hour lines with an example.
Why this guide does not quote NASM package prices
NASM sells the exam inside study programs as well as on its own. On October 17, 2026, the program page showed promotional pricing, including monthly payment offers and percentage discounts. Promotions like these change often, so any figure printed here could be wrong by the time you read it.
What a package includes also changes. The two NASM sources checked for this guide do not even agree on which programs include a free retest. The retake guide quotes both. To compare fairly, add up the $599 exam plus anything you would buy separately, then check that total against the contents of a package on the day you buy.
Costs after the NASM CPT exam: recertification
Passing starts a two-year cycle. To keep the NASM-CPT credential, you complete 2.0 continuing education units, keep your CPR/AED current and pay a recertification fee every two years. Using the 90-day grace period adds an extension fee, and restoring a lapsed certification adds a late fee. NASM also offers a one-time "Recertify for Life" payment that replaces future recertification fees but not the CEUs. The recertification guide lays out the timeline.
