The NCMHCE is NBCC's clinical case-study exam, used for counselor licensure in many states, for the NCC and for the CCMHC. See what it measures, how it's built, who decides whether you need it, and how to check your state's requirement.
Read the guideHow the current NCMHCE is built: 11 case studies in three sections each, 130 to 150 four-option questions with 100 scored, a 255-minute session with 225 minutes of exam time, sections that lock as you go, and a single break after the fifth case.
Read the guideNBCC's 2027 specifications give the NCMHCE 10 case studies, six new domains from a 2024–2025 work analysis, and a 100–500 scaled score with 360 to pass. See what's confirmed, what isn't announced yet, and which version your test date puts you on.
Read the guideA practical NCMHCE study plan: what NBCC itself gives you to study from, how to split your hours across the five scored domains, a 10-week schedule you can shorten or stretch, and a method for working full case studies the way the exam presents them.
Read the guideYou can register for the NCMHCE through CCE for a state license or inside an NBCC application for the NCC or CCMHC. Compare the two routes, follow the steps in order, and see every fee NBCC publishes and the one it doesn't.
Read the guideThe NCMHCE is demanding but passable: in NBCC's 2025 report, 67.6% of US licensure candidates passed. See what the numbers do and don't mean, why the case format feels harder than a standard exam, which domain scored lowest, and which myths to drop.
