Taking the NHA Phlebotomy Exam at Home, at a PSI Center or at School: Test-Day Rules for Each

You can take the NHA CPT at an authorized school or employer, at a PSI test center, or at home with a live remote proctor. The exam is the same; the rules aren't. Here is who can use each option, the ID NHA and PSI accept, what you can write on, break and device rules, the remote setup steps, accommodations, and what happens when the exam ends.

Short answer

Yes, you can take the NHA CPT at home through live remote proctoring (NHA assigns the provider; its help center describes PSI's), if you have a compatible computer (not a tablet or phone), Google Chrome, a private room and a reliable connection. You can also test at a PSI test center or, if your school or employer is an authorized NHA test site that offers the CPT, on site. The exam is the same everywhere; the rules differ. Remote candidates get a digital whiteboard, no breaks and can't use a military ID. PSI centers hand out a physical whiteboard, and schools provide two sheets of scratch paper.

Where you sit the NHA CPT doesn't change the exam: the same 120 questions in 2 hours, the same five domains, the same 390 passing score. It changes the room, the check-in, what you write on, whether you can step out, and the list of things that can end your appointment before it starts. The rules below come from NHA's Candidate Handbook (updated October 5, 2026), PSI's candidate bulletin for NHA exams (updated June 15, 2026) and NHA's help center, as checked on October 28, 2026. The exam's structure and pacing are in the NHA CPT exam format guide.

Who can test at school, at a PSI center or at home

The choice starts when you create your NHA candidate profile and pick an "Organization Type." The handbook explains what follows:

  • Affiliated with an authorized NHA test site. If your school or employer administers the CPT, you apply for one of its exam dates. NHA requires registration at least 8 days before a school exam date (NHA), and a missed deadline means a later date.
  • Registering individually, or your institution doesn't offer the CPT. You test through a third-party provider: in person at a PSI test center, or by live remote proctoring (LRP) at home or another appropriate location. NHA says LRP requires internet service that supports Voice over Internet Protocol and a computer compatible with the remote proctoring system, and that the LRP provider is selected for you.
  • Instructors at NHA-affiliated institutions test at PSI or remotely, not at their own school.

How to register for each route is covered in the NHA CPT eligibility and application guide.

Since June 1, 2026, PSI-delivered NHA exams use no scratch paper at all, at a center or remotely, and have a calculator embedded in the exam (NHA update log). Personal calculators and your computer's own calculator aren't allowed anywhere.

ID rules for the NHA CPT, wherever you test

The handbook asks for a current government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license or passport, that shows a current photograph, your signature and a permanent address. If the address on the ID differs from the one you registered with, bring proof of address, such as a current utility bill matching the ID. After verification, you initial the roster.

PSI's bulletin adds the details for its centers and remote sessions:

  • One ID, current, not temporary. Examples it accepts: a state driver's license or state ID card with photo, a federal employment authorization card, a government-issued passport, a New York City ID or a green card. Arizona state IDs without an expiration date are accepted.
  • Name match. The first and last name on the ID must match the name you registered under, which NHA's help center says must match exactly.
  • No military ID remotely. A military ID is not accepted for a remote online proctored exam.
  • No ID, no exam. Not presenting proper ID cancels the appointment and forfeits the exam fee.

NHA's learner readiness checklist suggests checking 45 days out that your ID won't expire before the exam and that your first name, last name and home address match it.

What you can't bring into the NHA CPT

The handbook's testing rules apply in every setting:

  • No electronic devices in the exam room: phones, computers, tablets, e-readers, cameras, MP3 players, pagers, radios, watches, AI glasses, earbuds, earphones, electronic translators, calculators or anything else electronic, unless approved as an accommodation.
  • No reference materials or papers of your own.
  • No eating or drinking unless approved in advance for a documented medical condition.
  • English only. The exam is in English, and interpreters aren't permitted to translate it.

PSI centers add that hats, caps, visors (religious apparel excepted), coats, shawls, hooded clothing and heavy jackets aren't permitted in the exam room, that no personal items enter the testing center, and that people who came with you can't wait in the center, the building or on its property.

One leftover to ignore: NHA's learner checklist, revised in February 2026, still tells candidates to bring two #2 pencils on exam day. Since June 2026, PSI exams use whiteboards, and the handbook says a school proctor supplies the writing instrument, so you don't need to bring pencils.

Setting up for an NHA CPT exam at home

NHA's remote scheduling guide, its system requirements page and PSI's bulletin give the steps:

  1. Use a computer. NHA says certification exams can't be taken on tablets or mobile devices.
  2. Run the compatibility check when you book. PSI's scheduler checks your audio, video, webcam and system, then asks you to confirm you have a suitable device and a secure room.
  3. Enter your name exactly as it appears on your photo ID, and request accommodations at this point if you have an approval.
  4. Pick your time carefully. Choose your country and time zone, watch the AM and PM markers, and remember that slots open 24 hours ahead of your current time.
  5. Run the check again at least 24 hours before. PSI warns that a software, firewall or webcam update after you book can break compatibility.
  6. On the day: use Google Chrome with cookies enabled; NHA recommends a wired connection and a download speed of 10 Mbps or more, and says to clear browsing history and exit the browser before testing. You can launch the exam up to 30 minutes before the start time.
  7. During the exam: follow the proctor's instructions to remove items, turn off devices, adjust lighting or reduce noise. PSI's proctor pauses the exam if an unauthorized person or activity appears on video or audio, and may end the test if the interruption isn't corrected.

If the exam won't launch, PSI's remote proctoring technical support is at (844) 267-1017.

During the exam, in every setting

The handbook's testing rules apply wherever you sit:

  • One continuous session. You can't stop and return later to finish.
  • No content help. The proctor won't answer questions about exam content.
  • Exam content stays in the room. Copying, photographing, recording or memorizing questions is a breach of NHA's confidentiality policy, and you're expected to report cheating you witness.

PSI's untimed tutorial, answer review and pacing are covered in the NHA CPT exam format guide. Sitting still for one unbroken session is a skill in itself, and the planned NHA CPT mock exam is one timed 2-hour sitting scored at the end.

Accommodations and where you can use them

NHA's accommodations FAQ says extended time is the only accommodation provided through live remote proctoring; candidates approved for any other accommodation must test in person at a PSI test center. The handbook gives approved extra time as 150% of the standard limit unless your documentation justifies more. Register for the exam first, request accommodations at least 30 days ahead, and don't book with PSI until NHA approves the request. Once NHA notifies PSI, PSI's accommodations department calls you within 48 hours; approvals stay valid for 365 days.

When the NHA CPT ends

At a PSI center or remotely, you get an on-screen message and an email with instructions for receiving your score from NHA. NHA's help center says results are available within 48 hours for both institution and PSI exams (NHA), and the handbook says scores are never given over the phone. How to read your score report, and the preliminary report some school exams show right away, are in the NHA CPT passing score guide.

Choosing between home, a PSI center and your school

This is Passy's editorial view, built on the rules above:

  • Your school makes sense when it offers the CPT on a date that fits: a familiar room, scratch paper, and an institution that sets the dates and approves the roster. The 8-day registration deadline is firm.
  • Home makes sense when you have a quiet room you can clear completely, a computer that passes PSI's check, a wired or very reliable connection, and an ID other than a military ID. There are no breaks at all, so plan for a full 2 hours at the desk.
  • A PSI center makes sense when home is shared or noisy, your internet is unreliable, or you've been approved for an accommodation other than extra time.

Whichever you pick, the 2-hour sitting is the same, so practice it once at full length before test day.

Missed appointments, lateness and rescheduling

PSI's bulletin treats all of these as a missed appointment that forfeits the fee: not canceling at least 24 hours before, not showing up, arriving after the exam start time, and not presenting proper ID. A voicemail doesn't count as a cancellation. Under the handbook, you can reschedule without repaying to a date within six months of the original exam date; if severe weather closes a PSI site, PSI reschedules you at no charge. The full rescheduling rules are in the NHA CPT eligibility and application guide. If your date moves, you can see which planned NHA Phlebotomy access period ends after your test date at launch; checkout isn't open yet.

Your NHA CPT test-day checklist

Passy's suggested order, built on NHA's and PSI's rules:

  1. When you book: check that your ID is current and that its first and last name match your registration exactly; for a remote exam, run the compatibility check.
  2. One week out: confirm your NHA login and password (NHA's checklist suggests writing them down if you'll test on a different computer), your appointment time and, for remote, your time zone.
  3. The day before (remote): run the compatibility check again, clear the room and desk, and plan a wired connection.
  4. The day before (center or school): plan the trip so you arrive early, and leave watches, earbuds and anything electronic at home.
  5. On the day: bring one current government-issued photo ID, launch remote exams up to 30 minutes early, and settle in for a single 2-hour session with no scheduled breaks.

In your final days, planned Cram and Test Day tools for your last NHA CPT days are meant to organize this list. Until then, the 20 free NHA phlebotomy practice questions are a quick way to rehearse reading questions on screen.
