How Much Does the PCCN Cost? Exam, Retest, Membership Math and Other AACN Fees
The PCCN costs $260 for AACN members and $375 for nonmembers, with a $185 or $290 retest fee. Here is when a $78 membership pays for itself, the extension and cancellation charges to avoid, group and employer discounts, and what renewal will cost in three years.
Short answer
As of October 27, 2026, AACN charges $260 for the computer-based PCCN exam if you are an AACN member and $375 if you are not. A retest costs $185 for members and $290 for nonmembers. AACN's own application form shows that joining for one year ($78) and paying the member fee totals $338, which is $37 less than the nonmember fee. Membership is not required to take the exam. Extensions of your testing window and application cancellations each cost $100.
The PCCN exam fee is $260 or $375, and which one you pay depends only on whether you are an AACN member when you apply. The bigger budget questions are the ones around it: whether to join AACN first, what a retest would add, and which avoidable fees catch candidates who apply too early. All amounts below are from AACN's current handbooks (July and September 2026) and its web pages, checked October 27, 2026. AACN notes that fees are subject to change without notice.
PCCN fees at a glance
| Fee | AACN member | Nonmember |
|---|---|---|
| PCCN exam (computer-based) | $260 | $375 |
| Retest after not passing | $185 | $290 |
| Renewal by exam (every 3 years) | $185 | $290 |
| Renewal by Synergy CERPs (every 3 years) | $150 | $230 |
| Inactive status at renewal | $95 | $175 |
The same exam and retest fees apply on both PCCN pathways, Direct Care and Knowledge Professional. AACN's FAQ says the discounted retest fee is available to candidates who do not pass, "until the exam is passed."
Does AACN membership pay for itself on the PCCN?
AACN does the first calculation for you. The application form in the PCCN handbook reads: member exam fee ($260) plus one-year membership ($78) equals a saving of $37 over the nonmember fee. AACN's membership page lists the same $78 a year for active RN members, with multi-year options on the paper form at $148 for two years and $200 for three.
The saving grows if you need a retest while your membership is active. Passy's arithmetic:
| Scenario | Nonmember | Member, including $78 dues | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pass on the first attempt | $375 | $338 | $37 |
| One retest within the membership year | $665 | $523 | $142 |
Three points before you join for the discount:
- Membership is optional. The policy handbook states that AACN membership is not an eligibility requirement.
- You can join while applying. The application form lets you join, renew or extend membership at the same time and "select member pricing for my exam fees."
- Think ahead to renewal. If you would also renew three years later, the member/nonmember gap is $80 for renewal by CERPs and $105 for renewal by exam.
Membership also brings AACN's own member pricing on its prep products, covered below. If you are comparing budgets, you can also compare the planned one-time 30-, 90- and 180-day PCCN prices, which are not yet on sale.
PCCN fees that catch candidates out
Most extra costs come from timing, not from the exam itself. From the Certification Exam Policy Handbook (September 2026) and AACN's scheduling page:
| Situation | What AACN charges |
|---|---|
| You can't test within your eligibility window and call before it expires | $100 extension fee |
| You cancel your application through AACN Customer Care | Refund minus a $100 processing fee |
| You miss your appointment | No refund and no extension |
| You don't show up and later reapply, application less than one year old | Reactivation for a fee equal to the retest fee |
| You don't show up, application more than one year old | New application plus a fee equal to the retest fee |
| You can't show acceptable ID for a remote exam | Admission denied; a retest fee is required |
| You are dismissed for a rules violation | Score voided, fees not refunded |
| You want an extra copy of your score report | $25 per copy |
| Your check is returned | $15 |
AACN lists no fee for rescheduling an appointment up to 48 hours before it. The cheapest protection against the first three rows is the one AACN's handbook gives: be ready to test before you apply, because your window (currently 180 days) starts at application. The PCCN eligibility and application guide walks through that timeline.
Group and employer discounts for the PCCN
AACN's certification discounts page lists PCCN among the exams eligible for two programs:
- Group discount. Ten or more candidates who apply together pay less per exam. AACN's example uses the CCRN: $235 for members and $345 for nonmembers. The page shows CCRN figures only, so confirm the PCCN group price with AACN. Joining AACN with a group application gets 10% off membership, and group pricing does not apply to paper exams.
- Organization discount. Employers and AACN chapters that buy 30 or more vouchers pay a further discounted rate (AACN's CCRN example is $210, the same for members and nonmembers), and each voucher recipient gets access to the related AACN review course. Vouchers are valid for retakes too.
Before paying yourself, ask your manager or education department whether your hospital buys AACN vouchers or reimburses certification fees. It can be the largest saving available.
What official PCCN preparation costs
No purchase is required to take the exam, and AACN says it does not approve, endorse or require any prep product. Free official material includes the PCCN Exam Handbook, with the test plan, nine sample questions with answers, and the exam bibliography. AACN's own practice exam, as listed on its practice exams page:
| AACN practice exam tier | Access | What it includes | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free trial | 7 days | 30 questions with rationales | Free, one time |
| Basic | 30 days | 150 questions with rationales | $35 member, $45 nonmember |
| Premium | 180 days | Hundreds of questions, content-area exams | $75 member, $90 nonmember |
Passy's free PCCN practice questions are a no-cost way to sample original questions, and you can see how planned PCCN prep with 850 explained questions compares once checkout opens.
A realistic PCCN budget
For most candidates the total is the exam fee, any prep you choose and, three years on, renewal. If you are a nonmember who passes first time and renews by CERPs as a nonmember, AACN's fees total $605 over the first certification cycle ($375 plus $230). The same path as a member costs $410 in AACN fees ($260 plus $150), before dues.
Next step: price your PCCN attempt
Decide on membership before you apply, since the fee is set at application. Then pick a test month you can prepare for, so you never pay the $100 extension. If a retest is on your mind, the PCCN retake guide covers the rules behind the $185 and $290 fees, and you can check how planned PCCN prep tracks accuracy by category to focus your study time where it counts.
