PMHNP-BC Renewal Requirements: CE, Pharmacology, and the New Pathways
Understand the five-year PMHNP-BC renewal cycle, how the 75 CE and 25 pharmacology hours fit together, and which requirements apply before or from February 1, 2027.
Short answer
PMHNP-BC certification renews every five years, with 75 continuing education contact hours, including 25 in pharmacology, plus an additional qualifying professional development activity and an active RN license. ANCC changes the renewal framework for applications submitted on or after February 1, 2027. Your submission date determines which handbook applies; 1,000 practice hours are one option under the new framework, not a requirement for everyone.
When is PMHNP-BC renewal due?
ANCC requires PMHNP-BC renewal every five years, with 75 continuing education contact hours, including 25 in pharmacology, plus an additional qualifying professional development activity and an active RN license. Its renewal rules change for applications submitted on or after February 1, 2027, so identify your submission date before choosing a handbook.
Under ANCC's rules checked November 3, 2026, you may submit renewal up to one year before certification expires. The activities you claim must fall within your current five-year certification period and be complete before you submit. Starting early does not let you count a course or activity you only intend to finish later.
Your first task is to record the certification expiration date and current certification period shown in your ANCC records. Then choose a submission target before expiration that leaves time to resolve documentation questions.
If you have not earned the credential yet, renewal is a future maintenance task. Use the PMHNP-BC eligibility guide for initial requirements and the guide to the five PMHNP-BC exam domains for exam scope. For that initial preparation, full PMHNP-BC prep planned for launch organizes review across five content domains.
Which handbook applies to your application date?
ANCC's renewal page establishes a submission-date cutoff. This is a verified renewal-policy change, checked November 3, 2026, rather than an assumed change to the initial certification exam.
| When you submit your renewal application | Handbook to use | Professional development structure |
|---|---|---|
| Before February 1, 2027 | Current renewal requirements handbook | Mandatory 75 CE hours plus one completed additional category from eight options |
| On or after February 1, 2027 | New renewal handbook | Mandatory 75 approved or accredited CE hours plus one completed activity in a professional development pathway |
For example, a renewal application submitted January 31, 2027 falls under the earlier handbook. An application submitted February 1, 2027 falls under the new one. Use the submission date to select the rules; do not choose a handbook solely from the year your certification expires.
If you are newly certified in 2027, start maintaining records when your certification period begins. That does not mean you need to submit renewal in 2027. Recheck ANCC's rules when your own renewal approaches, because today's handbook does not guarantee the requirements for a later renewal cycle.
Before collecting more hours, open the handbook that applies to your intended submission and check the qualifying criteria for the activity you plan to use.
How do CE and pharmacology hours fit together?
The 25 pharmacology contact hours are included within the mandatory 75 CE hours. They are not an extra 25 added on top.
A simple accounting example is:
| CE recorded | Contact hours |
|---|---|
| Qualifying nonpharmacology CE | 50 |
| Qualifying pharmacology CE | 25 |
| Mandatory CE total | 75 |
If you choose additional continuing education as your professional development option, that adds another 75 hours. The combined CE total is then 150 hours, not 175. The pharmacology requirement is already included in the mandatory first 75.
The approval requirements differ between handbooks. Under the earlier framework, at least 60 of the mandatory 75 hours must be formally approved. Under the new framework, the mandatory 75 hours must be approved or accredited, as must the extra 75 if you choose that pathway. Do not carry the earlier 60-hour rule into an application submitted on or after February 1, 2027.
Keep the certificate or other required evidence showing the credit awarded, including any pharmacology designation. A medication-related title alone is a reason to inspect the credit documentation, not a reason to enter every course hour as pharmacology. Confirm uncertain credit with the provider and the applicable ANCC handbook before counting it.
Exam study and documented renewal credit serve different purposes. If you are preparing for initial certification, full PMHNP-BC prep planned for launch includes 560 flashcards for review. No CE accreditation or renewal credit has been established for that planned resource; do not enter it in a renewal CE total on that assumption.
What additional activity or pathway must you complete?
Completing the mandatory CE alone does not finish the professional development requirements. The earlier handbook requires one fully completed additional category from its eight options. Use that handbook's definitions if submitting before the cutoff.
For submissions on or after February 1, 2027, the new handbook provides three pathway types. You need one complete qualifying activity, not an activity from every pathway.
| New pathway | Examples of the available choices | What to verify before committing |
|---|---|---|
| Additional CE | Another 75 approved or accredited CE contact hours | Approval or accreditation and completion within the current period |
| Practice | 1,000 relevant nursing-practice hours or 120 preceptorship hours or 120 volunteer-service hours | The handbook's definitions, qualifying role or service, and documentation |
| Scholarship | Qualifying evidence-based practice or quality-improvement project, presentation, publication, or research | The full criteria for the specific activity, rather than its name alone |
These are alternatives. The practice pathway does not require 1,000 practice hours plus 120 preceptorship hours plus 120 volunteer hours. Nor does every renewing PMHNP need 1,000 practice hours: another complete qualifying activity can meet the additional requirement.
Choose the activity you can fully document. If you already precept, read the preceptorship criteria before assuming your recorded hours qualify. If you have a presentation or publication, compare it with the scholarship rules before choosing that route. The table is a route map; the new renewal handbook supplies the detailed eligibility and evidence requirements.
What records should you retain from the start?
ANCC requires qualifying activities within the current certification period and supporting evidence. A practical recordkeeping system can use one folder for each certification period and a short log with these fields:
- Completion date and activity title.
- Provider or organization and the certificate or supporting record.
- Total CE contact hours and the pharmacology portion, where applicable.
- Approval or accreditation information.
- The additional category or pathway you intend to claim.
- Any missing documentation to resolve before submission.
This is an organizational suggestion, not a substitute for ANCC's required documents. Use the applicable handbook to decide which evidence each activity needs. Enter completed activities as you go so that, near renewal, you are checking a file rather than reconstructing years of work.
For a newly certified nurse, the useful first step is to save the certification dates and create that folder. If you are still waiting for initial certification, the PMHNP-BC results guide addresses that earlier stage.
Keep an initial exam study schedule separate from the renewal log. The 20 free PMHNP-BC practice questions and free PMHNP-BC study plan are preparation tools; using them is not evidence of qualifying renewal credit.
What should you check before submitting renewal?
Work through these checks against the handbook selected by your actual submission date:
- Confirm the deadline. Verify your expiration date and submit before it. The new handbook provides no grace period or backdating.
- Check your license. Confirm that your RN license meets ANCC's active-license requirement.
- Reconcile the mandatory CE. Verify 75 qualifying hours, including 25 in pharmacology, under the correct approval rules.
- Finish the additional requirement. Check one complete category or pathway activity and its documentation.
- Check the dates. Every claimed activity must fit the current five-year period and be completed before submission.
- Resolve uncertain items. Ask ANCC about an activity that does not clearly meet the handbook rather than relying on a partial summary.
For a 2027 renewal, the practical decision is whether you will submit before February 1 or from that date onward, and whether your completed records meet that framework. Recheck the official renewal page before submitting.
For a 2027 initial exam candidate, the next task is still exam preparation. Return to what the PMHNP-BC exam tests to set study priorities; full PMHNP-BC prep planned for launch includes a 175-question mock exam for timed practice. Start the renewal recordkeeping process once your certification period begins.
