PMP Exam 2027: Which Outline Applies and What PMI Has Confirmed

If your PMP exam falls in 2027, you take the 2026 Exam Content Outline. Here are the dates that matter, what PMI has and has not announced, and how to study for that outline.

Short answer

A PMP exam taken in 2027 follows the PMP Examination Content Outline – 2026, which PMI made live on July 9, 2026 for every exam scheduled on or after that date: People 33%, Process 41%, Business Environment 26%, with 180 questions in 240 minutes. As checked on October 25, 2026, PMI has announced no further exam or outline change. The dated changes that reach 2027 candidates sit around the exam: from December 1, 2026, live training for the 35 hours must come from approved providers, and legacy PMI prep bought before the update stays in myPMI only until December 31, 2026.

The PMP outline 2027 candidates will sit

A PMP exam you take in 2027 follows the PMP Examination Content Outline – 2026 (the ECO), the outline every PMP exam has used since PMI launched the updated exam on July 9, 2026. As checked on October 25, 2026, PMI has announced no new outline, no new domain weights, and no change to the 180-question, 240-minute format for 2027. The dated changes that do reach 2027 candidates sit around the exam: who may deliver live training for the 35 hours, and how long legacy PMI prep stays available.

Announcement, effective, and revision dates often get mixed up in PMP coverage, so here they are separately, from PMI's own pages:

DateWhat PMI says happenedWhat it means for a 2027 exam
Not statedAnnouncement of the updated examPMI's PMP page, new-exam page, and launch press release give no announcement date, so none is given here
July 9, 2026The updated exam went live. PMI's FAQ: "All exams scheduled on or after this date use the new PMP certification exam."Every 2027 appointment uses it. The earlier outline, weighted 42/50/8, is no longer the basis of any scheduled exam
August 11, 2026The English ECO PDF linked from PMI's PMP page now reads "revised 11 August 2026"Download the outline from PMI rather than relying on a copy saved before the launch
December 1, 2026Live instructor-led training counts toward the 35 hours only from a PMI Authorized Training Partner, a China Registered Education Provider, or an eligible accredited academic programCovers live courses completed from that date, so it reaches most 2027 applicants who still need hours
December 31, 2026Legacy PMP eLearning and exam prep bought before the update leave the myPMI learning platformFrom 2027 you would need new versions. PMI says learners in ATP instructor-led courses keep access to all available versions

The PMP exam overview with PMI's source links carries the same weights and format, checked against these documents.

What the 2026 outline means on a 2027 PMP exam day

FeatureWhat PMI states for the current PMP
Questions180: 170 scored and 10 unscored pretest questions, placed at random
Time and breaks240 minutes. PMI's FAQ says this includes two 10-minute breaks. Once you review your answers and start a break, you cannot return to the previous section
DomainsPeople 33%, Process 41%, Business Environment 26% (before July 9, 2026: 42%, 50%, and 8%)
Tasks26 in total: 8 People, 10 Process, 8 Business Environment. Every exam includes questions on all tasks in a domain
Delivery approachesAbout 40% predictive and 60% agile or hybrid, spread across all three domains
Question typesCase or scenario sets and graphic-based questions (both marked new), multiple choice, and multiple response in every modality. Four more types appear only on computer at a test center
ScoringPMI's FAQ says the scoring method has not changed. PMI publishes no passing percentage
DeliveryPearson VUE test center, which PMI recommends, or online with a proctor. Paper-based testing in some cases, and paper only in mainland China

The biggest change is the weight of Business Environment, up from 8% to 26%. Its eight tasks cover governance, compliance, change control, impediments and issues, risk, continuous improvement, organizational change, and changes in the outside business environment. Risk and change control alone now sit in a domain that carries about one question in four.

AI and sustainability are where many older materials fall short. The ECO says they were trends fed into the job task analysis behind the outline. Sustainability then appears inside enablers: as a critical information requirement in planning, next to cost of quality, as a compliance requirement, and as a risk. AI is not named in any task or enabler. PMI's July 10, 2026 blog post says scenario questions may include AI tools such as dashboards, and that the exam checks how you evaluate tools, tradeoffs, and implications in a real situation. Expect AI as context inside a scenario, not as a list of tools to memorize. The PMP question types guide shows what case and graphic items ask you to do.

Passy's planned full prep is organized on the same three domains, and the PMP page lists the planned PMP question counts for People, Process, and Business Environment alongside the flashcards for each.

What PMI has not announced for 2027

These points come from PMI's PMP page, the new-exam page and its FAQ, the ECO, and the June 2026 certification handbook, all checked on October 25, 2026:

  • No new outline or weights. Nothing on those pages describes a 2027 exam different from the July 2026 one.
  • No change to length or timing. The FAQ still gives 180 questions and 240 minutes with two 10-minute breaks.
  • No published passing score. PMI's handbook describes a criteria-based standard, not a percentage. The PMP passing score guide explains what PMI does tell you.
  • No date for a future outline update. None of the pages gives one, so any 2027 or 2028 "new PMP" date you see elsewhere is not a PMI date.
  • No fixed mix of question types. The ECO says the number of items of each type and approach may vary by form.

What PMI has shown this year is how it posts changes. The December 1 training rule was posted on the new-exam page as a dated notice, labeled a planned update, ahead of its effective date. If something changes for 2027, that page and the ECO download on the PMP page are the first places to check.

Eligibility and training rules for 2027 PMP applicants

PMI describes the July 2026 update as expanding eligibility "to apprenticeships and training, with a 10-year window for experience." The ECO now has four education tiers, needing 60, 48, 36, or 24 months of non-overlapping project leadership within the 10 years before you apply. The PMP eligibility requirements guide shows how to count your months.

Training is where a 2027 date really differs. From December 1, 2026, live classes, in person or online, count only from an ATP, a China REP, or an eligible accredited academic program, including PMI Global Accreditation Center (GAC) programs. Self-paced courses still count from any provider if they include an end-of-course assessment. PMI's September 25, 2026 blog adds that courses completed before December 1, 2026 stay eligible "even if you apply after the new live-training rules take effect." The guide to the 35 contact hours in 2027 sorts each kind of course.

Your eligibility clock works as before: one year from approval, or from the day PMI tells you that you passed an audit, with up to three attempts. If PMI approves your application on November 16, 2026, for example, your year runs into November 2027, and every attempt in it would be on the 2026 outline unless PMI announces otherwise.

Preparing for a 2027 PMP date against the 2026 outline

PMI tells candidates who are already studying older materials to keep going, because the exam's "core principles and approaches" remain the same. That holds for the fundamentals. The weights did not stay the same, so sort what you own before you plan:

ActionWhat to look for
KeepScheduling, finance, quality, agile roles and events, team leadership, and stakeholder work
Re-weightAny study plan or practice set built on 42/50/8. Move time toward Business Environment
AddGovernance thresholds and escalation, compliance categories, value and benefits tracking, organizational change, and responses to external changes
PracticeReading charts, working through linked case questions, and scenarios where AI tools or data are part of the situation
RetireQuestion banks that mirror only the old weights, and anything sold as real exam questions. PMI's handbook lists access to test questions before the exam among the conduct that can invalidate a score

Then split your study time by the 2026 weights before adjusting for weak spots. With 120 study hours, a straight split is about 40 hours of People, 49 of Process, and 31 of Business Environment (Passy arithmetic: 33%, 41%, and 26% of 120). The free PMP study planner builds a plan from your exam date and daily time and lets you choose a focus domain.

Full PMP prep on Passy is still being built around this outline, with no launch date set. You can see what full PMP prep will include at launch, such as a 180-question timed mock and practice by domain. Until then, the 20 free PMP practice questions follow the 33/41/26 allocation (7 People, 8 Process, 5 Business Environment) with 12 of the 20 set in agile or hybrid projects. They are single-answer items, so pair them with the chart and case reading described in the question types guide.

Before you book a 2027 date, check two things against PMI's pages: the "revised" date on the ECO you are studying from, and the provider of any live course you are counting toward the 35 hours. If both match what PMI shows today, your preparation is aimed at the right exam.
