Do You Need Praxis Core for 2027? Check Your Program, State, and Exemptions
Confirm whether your 2027 teacher preparation program requires Praxis Core, which exemptions it accepts, and what evidence to save before registering.
Short answer
Whether you need Praxis Core for 2027 depends on your state, preparation program, and route: ETS says states and licensing organizations set their own requirements. A state licensure rule may not settle a program's admission requirement, and an accepted exemption may remove some or all Core subtests. Confirm the rule for your intended 2027 entry term and obtain written acceptance of any exemption before registering.
Who decides whether you need Core for 2027 entry?
Whether you need Praxis Core for 2027 depends on your state, preparation program, and route. ETS says each state and licensing organization determines its own requirements, so there is no single nationwide answer to whether you must take it.
Start with the ETS state requirements directory, then verify the relevant rule with your state education agency and the preparation program you intend to enter. Treat the directory as a starting point: ETS's bulletin warns that its state information may lag policy changes.
Write down the exact decision you need: “For admission to this program, through this route, in this 2027 term, which basic-skills requirements remain unmet?” That is more useful than asking whether your state “uses Praxis.” It connects the answer to your application instead of to someone else's teaching plans.
The policies below were checked November 3, 2026. They are current examples for planning, not announcements that every rule will remain unchanged throughout 2027.
What must you confirm with your preparation program?
Ask the program's admissions or certification office to confirm the requirement for your specific entry term. Use this worksheet as an editorial planning aid; its rows are questions to resolve, not additional ETS eligibility rules.
| Item to record | What to confirm for your 2027 application |
|---|---|
| Destination | Intended state, institution, program, and credential |
| Entry | Exact term and preparation route |
| Requirement | Whether Praxis Core is required for your admission |
| Remaining tests | Reading 5713, Writing 5723, Mathematics 5733, or none |
| Score rule | Required result for each test and any applicable alternative |
| Exemption evidence | Accepted prior assessment, score, and document format |
| Delivery | Required score recipients and the program's receipt deadline |
| Confirmation | Staff response, policy link, and date checked |
Do not leave a blank field looking like an exemption. Mark it “awaiting confirmation” until the program answers. If you already have assessment results, ask staff to review them before you decide which tests to buy.
Once the required subtests are clear, use the Praxis Core study guide to identify their content. For structured preparation after that decision, full Praxis Core prep planned for launch organizes practice across eight content categories. Choose your study priorities from the requirements you have actually confirmed.
Why can a state license page give only part of the answer?
Tennessee provides a useful example. Its Department of Education says Praxis Core is not required for licensure, but may be required for admission to an educator preparation program. The department directs candidates to their preparation provider to confirm whether it applies.
For a candidate entering a Tennessee program in 2027, finding the phrase “not required for licensure” therefore does not finish the admission check. The next step is to ask the chosen provider whether Core is required for that route and entry term. This distinction comes from Tennessee's published policy, checked November 3, 2026; it should not be copied into advice for another state.
South Carolina shows a different structure. Its Department of Education publishes basic-skills assessment options for undergraduate educator preparation admission, including Praxis Core scores and approved qualifying exemptions. A candidate using that route should check which option the program will accept and which evidence it needs.
These examples are not a two-state ranking or a national exemption list. They show why you need both the relevant state policy and a program-specific answer before paying. Keep score interpretation separate: the Praxis Core passing-score guide explains how to check the applicable thresholds once the requirement is established.
How can a qualifying exemption change the tests you need?
An exemption may cover all three Core tests or only certain subjects. South Carolina's published undergraduate admission policy includes these options, checked November 3, 2026:
| Qualifying assessment result | Core tests covered by the South Carolina exemption |
|---|---|
| SAT composite of at least 1100 | Reading, Writing, and Mathematics |
| SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing of at least 550 | Reading and Writing |
| SAT Mathematics of at least 550 | Mathematics |
| ACT composite of at least 22 | Reading, Writing, and Mathematics |
| ACT English of at least 22 | Reading and Writing |
| ACT Mathematics of at least 22 | Mathematics |
These are South Carolina examples, not national thresholds. Confirm their applicability to your 2027 route and ask your program to accept the supporting record before relying on them.
For example, suppose a South Carolina applicant has an SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score of 550 and the program confirms that exemption. That result covers Reading and Writing under the listed policy. The applicant should then ask whether Mathematics is already satisfied through another accepted result or remains outstanding. The reading-and-writing exemption alone does not settle Mathematics.
If Mathematics is the only remaining subtest, start with the Praxis Core Math 5733 guide. The 450 flashcards in full Praxis Core prep planned for launch provide material for recall practice, alongside focused work on the content you still need.
Before committing to a study schedule, try the 20 free Praxis Core practice questions. Use your mistakes to identify review topics; practice performance does not establish an exemption.
What evidence should you save before registering?
Keep a small admission evidence folder. Save the policy page or document you relied on, your assessment record, the program's response about exemptions, and your completed worksheet. This is practical recordkeeping advice, not an ETS documentation mandate.
A useful written request names your intended 2027 term and asks the program to confirm three things: which Core subtests remain, what result is required, and how the supporting evidence must reach the program. If staff accepts an exemption, save that response with the record it evaluated.
Check that the response addresses your route rather than a general admissions page. If two sources disagree, send both links to the program and ask it to resolve the conflict before registration. Do not infer that a policy for a different credential or entry term answers your case.
Once those points are settled, use the Praxis Core registration guide for 2027 to work backward from your confirmed score-receipt deadline. The requirement decision should come before choosing an appointment.
When should you repeat the check for a later 2027 term?
Repeat the requirement check if you change your state, preparation program, route, or entry term. Ask whether the earlier answer still applies and whether the same exemption evidence remains acceptable. Do this before buying another test or dropping a subtest from your plan.
There is also a testing-policy boundary to watch. The ETS Information Bulletin checked November 3, 2026 covers August 1, 2026 through July 31, 2027, with terms subject to change. If you plan to test in August 2027 or later, read the next applicable bulletin before booking. That boundary does not itself mean your program's admission rule changes on August 1; program requirements need their own confirmation. Earlier appointments still require a current check.
With the required subtests confirmed, build the free Praxis Core study plan around your actual deadline. For additional practice, full Praxis Core prep planned for launch includes 1,200 questions for work on the tested skills.
Your next step is to complete the worksheet for your intended 2027 entry term and obtain the missing answers from your program. Register when you can identify the tests you need, the evidence already accepted, and where the remaining results must go.
