SHRM-CP Exam Format: 134 Questions, Two 110-Minute Sections and the 2026 Weights

The SHRM-CP has 134 multiple-choice questions, 24 of them unscored, in two separately timed sections of up to 110 minutes. Here is the item mix, the 2026 content weights turned into approximate question counts, the break and calculator rules, and what changes for candidates outside the U.S.

Short answer

The SHRM-CP has 134 multiple-choice questions: 80 knowledge items and 54 situational judgment items. SHRM's SHRM-CP page says 24 of the 134 are unscored field-test items, so 110 count toward your score. You get two separately timed sections of up to 110 minutes each (3 hours 40 minutes of testing in a roughly 4-hour appointment), at a Prometric test center. Half the content covers the Leadership, Business and Interpersonal clusters, and half the People, Organization and Workplace domains.

These figures come from SHRM's SHRM-CP page, exam details page and the 2026 handbook, checked on October 27, 2026. The SHRM-SCP uses the same structure and the same distribution of content and item types.

How the 134 SHRM-CP questions break down

The handbook says both exams "also include 24 unscored field-test items," which can read as if the 24 come on top of the 134. SHRM's exam details page says each exam "contains" the 24, and its SHRM-CP page settles it: "134 questions (80 knowledge items and 54 situational-judgment items, of which 24 are field-test items)." You answer 134 questions, and 110 count.

SHRM's certification staff gave the scored split in a March 2024 SHRM article: 55 knowledge items from the People, Organization and Workplace domains, and 44 situational judgment items plus 11 foundational knowledge items from the Leadership, Business and Interpersonal clusters. The 24 field-test items are spread proportionally across item types and areas. By Passy's arithmetic, that leaves 14 unscored knowledge-type items and 10 unscored situational judgment items.

You can't tell which items are unscored, so treat every question as if it counts.

The three SHRM-CP item types

Item typeShare of itemsWhat it tests
HR-specific knowledge items (KIs)50%Key concepts in the 14 HR functional areas of the People, Organization and Workplace domains
Situational judgment items (SJIs)40%Judgment and decision-making in realistic work scenarios, tied to the behavioral competencies
Foundational knowledge items (FKIs)10%Key concepts behind the behavioral competencies

Knowledge items have one correct answer. Situational judgment items present several plausible actions, and you earn credit only for the one a panel of experienced HR professionals judged most effective. SHRM's April 2024 SJI article adds that each question has four response options and that A, B, C and D are each the keyed answer about a quarter of the time. The handbook describes credit for the correct answer and no credit otherwise, with no deduction mentioned, so a blank answer can only cost you. The SHRM-CP situational judgment guide covers how SJIs are keyed.

2026 SHRM-CP content weights and approximate question counts

The 2026 handbook sets these weights. SHRM doesn't publish item counts per area; the counts below are Passy's arithmetic (weight × 110 scored items), so read them as approximate.

AreaTypeWeightAbout this many scored items
LeadershipBehavioral competency cluster19%21
BusinessBehavioral competency cluster17.5%19
InterpersonalBehavioral competency cluster13.5%15
PeopleHR knowledge domain19%21
OrganizationHR knowledge domain18%20
WorkplaceHR knowledge domain13%14

These weights are new in the 2026 handbook. The 2025 handbook listed Leadership 17%, Business 16.5%, Interpersonal 16.5%, People 18%, Organization 18% and Workplace 14%, and the graphics on SHRM's own SHRM-CP page still show those older numbers and mention "15 HR functional areas." Rely on the 2026 handbook. The 2026 SHRM BASK changes guide compares the two editions.

SHRM-CP timing on test day

Segment2026 handbookExam details page
Confidentiality reminder2 minutes2 minutes
Introduction and tutorial10 minutes8 minutes
Section 1Up to 110 minutesUp to 110 minutes
Section 2Up to 110 minutesUp to 110 minutes
Survey8 minutes5 minutes

Both sources agree on the parts that matter. Each section has its own countdown timer, unused minutes in Section 1 don't carry into Section 2, and once you move on to Section 2 you can't go back. The exam page adds that minutes saved in the introduction don't roll over either.

SHRM doesn't publish how many questions fall in each section. Across both, you have 220 minutes for 134 questions, about 1 minute 38 seconds per question by Passy's arithmetic. Situational judgment items carry a scenario to read, so a practical approach is to move briskly through knowledge items and bank time for scenarios. Rehearse the two-section SHRM-CP format with the planned timed mock exam, which runs 3 hours 40 minutes like the real one.

SHRM-CP breaks, calculator and test-center rules

  • Breaks. The handbook and Prometric's testing rules say there are no scheduled breaks; you may leave the room, but the clock keeps running and you may not leave the facility. The exam page describes one optional 15-minute break, with the clock still running, and recommends taking it only if needed: before ending Section 1 if time remains, or after Section 2 starts.
  • Calculator. SHRM's March 2024 article says math questions exist in the item bank and an on-screen calculator is provided. Personal calculators and watches are prohibited aids.
  • Storage. Lockers hold your phone, bag, jacket, food and drinks. Phones and study materials are off-limits from arrival, including during breaks.
  • Arrival. Arrive at least 30 minutes early; arriving 30 minutes or more late means you can't test.
  • Noise. Other exams run in the same room; you can ask for headphones or earplugs.

SHRM-CP for candidates outside the U.S.

The exam is the same structure worldwide, with two differences worth knowing:

  • U.S. employment law. SHRM's March 2024 article says content from the U.S. Employment Law & Regulations functional area, part of the Workplace domain, "will not appear to international examinees." SHRM's Choosing the Right HR Certification page adds that international exams "may ask about universal employment law concepts" rather than any one country's laws.
  • Translated forms. Arabic and Korean versions are available at Prometric centers for residents of listed countries, who can request the English version in writing.

Next step on SHRM-CP format

Format surprises cost time, not points, if you have rehearsed. Try the free SHRM-CP practice questions, which mix both item types, then read the SHRM-CP passing score guide to see how those 110 scored items become a result. When you are ready for scale, see how planned SHRM-CP question counts follow the 2026 weights, from 342 Leadership questions to 234 for Workplace.
