How Long to Study for the SIE: 2-, 4- and 8-Week Plans Built on FINRA's Section Weights
FINRA doesn't set study hours for the SIE. Here is a planning budget by background, how to split your hours across the four official sections, and three week-by-week plans with a timed practice-test checkpoint.
Short answer
FINRA doesn't publish a recommended number of study hours for the SIE. As a planning estimate, Passy suggests about 25 to 35 hours if you have finance coursework or industry experience, 35 to 50 with some exposure, and 50 to 70 if you're new to finance, spread over two to eight weeks. Whatever the total, split it by FINRA's weights: about 44% on Products and Their Risks, 31% on Trading, Customer Accounts and Prohibited Activities, 16% on Capital Markets and 9% on the Regulatory Framework.
Candidate forums report everything from about a week to several months of SIE study. That spread isn't useful until you know your own starting point. FINRA sets the content and the format, not the hours, so the plan has to come from the outline and from you.
What FINRA fixes and what it leaves to you
FINRA publishes three things that shape a study plan, and nothing about hours:
- The content outline (© 2025): four sections with fixed weights and item counts, plus the rules each section draws on
- The format: 80 items, 75 of them scored, in 1 hour 45 minutes, so timed practice is part of the plan
- A 120-day testing window once your enrollment is approved, which caps how long you can spread your study after you pay
FINRA also offers a free 75-question practice test, which this guide uses as a checkpoint.
An SIE planning budget by background
These ranges are Passy's planning assumptions, based on the size of the outline. They are not FINRA figures, and hitting them doesn't predict a pass.
| Your starting point | Planning budget | Typical spread |
|---|---|---|
| Finance or economics coursework, or work at a financial firm | 25–35 hours | 2–3 weeks |
| Some exposure: personal investing, business classes | 35–50 hours | 4–6 weeks |
| New to finance and markets | 50–70 hours | 6–8 weeks |
Adjust after your first week. If the vocabulary is slowing you down (ex-dividend date, yield to call, unit investment trust), move to the next row down. If you're also preparing for the Series 7, remember that FINRA requires both passes for the General Securities registration; the SIE difficulty guide compares the two exams on FINRA's numbers.
Split your SIE hours by FINRA's section weights
Start from the weights, then tilt toward what you find hard. For a 40-hour plan:
| Section | Weight | Scored questions | Hours at 40 total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Understanding Products and Their Risks | 44% | 33 | 17.5 |
| Understanding Trading, Customer Accounts and Prohibited Activities | 31% | 23 | 12.5 |
| Knowledge of Capital Markets | 16% | 12 | 6.5 |
| Overview of the Regulatory Framework | 9% | 7 | 3.5 |
Two adjustments are worth making. Section 3 lists the longest set of rules in the outline, by Passy's count about half of the roughly 150 rule and regulation references, so it may need more than its 31%. Section 4 is small but concrete: Form U4 and U5, outside business activities, private securities transactions, gifts. A few focused hours can cover it. You can see how the planned SIE prep sizes each section, from 275 Products questions to 56 on the Regulatory Framework.
The 2-week SIE plan (about 30 hours)
For candidates with a finance background, at roughly two hours a day.
| Days | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1–3 | Products: equities, debt instruments, municipal securities, options basics |
| 4–5 | Products: investment companies, 529 plans and ABLE accounts, DPPs, REITs, hedge funds, ETFs and ETNs, the risk types |
| 6–8 | Trading, accounts and prohibited activities: orders, settlement, dividend dates, account registrations, AML, manipulation, insider trading |
| 9 | Capital markets: regulators, market types, the Fed and economic indicators, offerings |
| 10 | Regulatory framework: registration, continuing education, U4 and U5, reportable events |
| 11 | FINRA's practice test, timed at 105 minutes. Review every miss and every guess |
| 12–13 | Your weakest section, then mixed timed sets |
| 14 | Light review of your notes. Rest |
Two weeks leaves no slack. With the exam two weeks out, you're already inside FINRA's free-change deadline of 10 business days: changes 3 to 10 business days ahead cost $50, and changes within two business days cost $100. Decide by the end of the first week whether two weeks is realistic, while a change still costs $50 rather than $100.
The 4-week SIE plan (about 40 hours)
Five study days a week, about two hours each.
| Week | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1 | Products, part 1: equities, debt and municipal securities, options. Work through bond price and yield until it's automatic |
| 2 | Products, part 2: packaged products, municipal fund securities, DPPs, REITs, hedge funds, ETPs, risks and how to reduce them. Then capital markets |
| 3 | Trading, accounts and prohibited activities, then the regulatory framework |
| 4 | FINRA's practice test, timed, at the start of the week. Two days on the weakest section, one mixed timed set, a rest day before the exam |
Week 4 is where timing practice pays off. If you want a second full-length rehearsal after FINRA's test, an 80-question timed mock exam is planned for full SIE prep.
The 8-week SIE plan (about 50–60 hours)
For candidates new to finance, at five days a week and 75 to 90 minutes a day. Capital markets comes first here because it builds the vocabulary the other sections use.
| Week | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1 | Capital markets: regulators and market participants, primary and secondary markets, the Fed, the business cycle, offerings |
| 2 | Products: equities and debt instruments, including municipal securities |
| 3 | Products: options, investment companies, variable contracts, municipal fund securities |
| 4 | Products: DPPs, REITs, hedge funds, ETPs, the risk types. A mixed review of weeks 2 to 4 |
| 5 | Trading: orders and strategies, returns, settlement, corporate actions, account types and registrations |
| 6 | Customer accounts and prohibited activities: AML, books and records, privacy, communications, best interest and suitability, manipulation, insider trading |
| 7 | Regulatory framework. FINRA's practice test, timed, at the end of the week |
| 8 | Weak sections first, mixed timed sets, final review |
Checkpoints before you keep the date
FINRA says its practice test score shouldn't be taken as an absolute prediction of your result, and each real exam covers some, but not all, of the outline. So use checkpoints as signals, not verdicts. A practical set, from Passy:
- Every section is moving up, not just your total
- Your misses are scattered, not clustered in one topic you haven't studied
- You finish 80 questions in 105 minutes with a few minutes to review
If one of those is clearly off, more hours on that section tend to help more than more hours overall. The free SIE practice questions give a quick read across all four sections between checkpoints.
Fitting the plan to your SIE window
Book the exam once you've picked a plan length, because FINRA encourages scheduling as far ahead as possible and seats vary by location. Under Regulatory Notice 26-18, your 120-day window normally begins the day after FINRA processes the enrollment, so a 2- to 8-week plan fits inside it with room to move the date once. The SIE registration guide covers the change fees, and the Products and Their Risks guide breaks down the section that takes the largest share of your hours.
To turn your date and daily minutes into a plan you can adjust, use the free SIE study planner. It weights your schedule by the four official sections. When you've settled on a length, you can weigh 30, 90 or 180 days of planned SIE access against your plan, with checkout not yet open.
