VTNE Testing Windows in 2027: Exam Dates and Application Cutoffs
The VTNE runs in four two-month windows a year, and each has a completed-application cutoff one month in. Here is AAVSB's recurring schedule projected onto November 2026 through 2027, how the cutoff and the two-week review interact, and the rules for moving to another window.
Short answer
AAVSB offers the VTNE in four recurring windows: February 15–April 15, May 15–July 15, August 15–October 15 and November 15–January 15. To test in a window, your application must be complete by March 15, June 15, September 15 or December 15. AAVSB publishes this schedule without a year and had announced no change as of October 27, 2026. Projected from that recurring schedule, not announced by AAVSB for 2027, the next window runs November 15, 2026 to January 15, 2027 (cutoff December 15, 2026), and the 2027 windows fall on the same dates. Confirm them on AAVSB's application page before you apply.
The VTNE isn't offered on any day you like. You test inside one of four windows, and you can only pick a window once AAVSB has finished reviewing your eligibility. Planning backward from the window you want is the whole game.
The four VTNE windows and their cutoffs
AAVSB's application page and the candidate handbook show the same recurring schedule, checked on October 27, 2026:
| Exam window | Completed application cutoff |
|---|---|
| February 15 – April 15 | March 15 |
| May 15 – July 15 | June 15 |
| August 15 – October 15 | September 15 |
| November 15 – January 15 | December 15 |
Each cutoff falls one month after its window opens. You can apply at any time of year; the cutoff is the last day an application can be complete and still land in that window.
Projected VTNE dates for late 2026 and 2027
AAVSB's schedule carries no year, and AAVSB had announced no change for 2027 on the pages checked on October 27, 2026. The dates below are Passy's projection of that recurring schedule onto the next five windows, not dates AAVSB has announced for 2027. Confirm them on AAVSB's application page before you apply, and recheck before each cutoff.
| Projected window | Completed application by |
|---|---|
| November 15, 2026 – January 15, 2027 | December 15, 2026 |
| February 15 – April 15, 2027 | March 15, 2027 |
| May 15 – July 15, 2027 | June 15, 2027 |
| August 15 – October 15, 2027 | September 15, 2027 |
| November 15, 2027 – January 15, 2028 | December 15, 2027 |
How the VTNE cutoff interacts with eligibility review
The cutoff applies to a completed application, and completion depends on review. The handbook says eligibility review "may take up to two (2) weeks once all documents are received," and that review must finish before you can select a window. So the date that matters is when your last document reaches AAVSB, not when you start the online form.
A worked example: your transcript reaches AAVSB on March 1, 2027, and you're aiming for the February 15–April 15 window. If review takes the full two weeks, it ends on March 15, the cutoff itself, which leaves no room for a missing document or a slow reply. Getting documents in by mid-February would leave a margin. For accredited graduates after January 1, 2025, the same logic applies to your program director's roster: ask when it will be uploaded.
Accommodation requests follow the same cutoff as the application, and the handbook says they can take up to two weeks to review, so start them early too. The review weeks can also be study weeks, because the content doesn't depend on which window you get: planned VTNE prep is organized by the 10 official domains, and the free practice set works today.
Choosing between the next two VTNE windows
Once review is complete, the handbook says you can choose from the next two windows. Within a window, you pick a date, time and PSI test center or live remote proctoring slot, depending on seat availability. Two points to weigh:
- Readiness. Pick the window in which you'll have finished your study plan, not the first one available. The free VTNE study planner counts the weeks to an appointment inside a window
- A retest inside the same window. The handbook allows a retake 31 days after an attempt, "including testing in the same window" if you complete a new application before that window's cutoff. Working through the dates, that only fits if you test early: in the projected February 15–April 15, 2027 window, an attempt on March 10 makes April 10 the earliest retest, and the new application must be complete by March 15. An attempt after the window's cutoff date rules out a same-window retake. This is Passy's reading of the dates, not a separate AAVSB rule
If you're deciding how long to study before a given window, you can compare planned VTNE prep access lengths against the weeks left before your window. Checkout isn't open yet.
Moving your VTNE appointment or window
AAVSB's rescheduling page and the handbook set these rules:
| Change | Rule |
|---|---|
| New date, time or location inside the same window | Reschedule in your PSI portal at least 48 hours before your appointment |
| Move to a different window | Allowed once per application, only to the very next window, for a $90 administrative fee; request it at least 48 hours before your appointment, or before the window ends if you haven't scheduled |
| Any further move | Not allowed: you reapply and pay the full $375 fee |
| Not testing in your window | The fee is forfeited and you submit a new application |
The handbook says to send window-transfer requests to vettech@aavsb.org, while the rescheduling page points you to your MyAAVSB portal. Either way, the 48-hour limit is firm: inside 48 hours you can't change the appointment.
Emergencies and closures
AAVSB recognizes a short list of excused absences: a serious illness of you or an immediate family member, a death in the immediate family, or a disabling traffic accident on the way to the exam. With approved documentation, the appointment can move to the following window at no charge; the rescheduling page asks you to email AAVSB within 48 hours of your scheduled exam time. If bad weather or an emergency closes a test center, PSI contacts you to reschedule within the current window. If the center is open, you're expected to attend.
Why some VTNE dates online don't match
Before 2025, the VTNE ran in three shorter windows. AAVSB's September 17, 2024 announcement, which is no longer on AAVSB's site and survives as an Internet Archive copy, moved all 2025 exams and applications to four two-month windows with an open application, and said the old windows would close on December 15, 2024.
Some pages never caught up. Delaware's Board of Veterinary Medicine exam page, checked on October 27, 2026, still lists March 15–April 15, July 15–August 15 and November 15–December 15, each paired with a state document deadline. AAVSB's page governs the exam windows. If your board sets its own document deadlines, ask it which dates apply to the current four windows rather than guessing.
Planning backward from your VTNE window
- Pick a target window and write down its completed-application cutoff.
- Count back at least two weeks for review, plus the time your school or program director needs to send proof.
- Count back your study weeks from a test date inside the window, aiming for a date before the window's cutoff if you want a same-window retest option.
Full VTNE prep planned for launch adds a timed 170-question mock exam you could sit a week or two before your appointment. For what happens after an attempt that doesn't go your way, the VTNE retake guide covers the 31-day rule and attempt limits, and the guide to applying for the VTNE covers the documents that start the clock.
