CPC Renewal Requirements: Membership, CEUs and Your First Cycle

How to maintain your CPC with annual AAPC membership, the right CEU total and credit mix, and the reporting dates in your account.

Short answer

Maintaining one CPC credential requires annual AAPC membership and 36 continuing education units (CEUs) every two years. Your account supplies the actual reporting dates and any prorated first-period requirement. At least two-thirds of the required credits must be approved Curriculum A, and excess credits do not carry into the next period.

What does one CPC credential require to stay active?

AAPC requires annual membership and 36 continuing education units (CEUs) every two years to maintain one CPC credential. Your first CEU period may be prorated, so use the dates and required total shown in your AAPC account instead of adding two years to your exam date.

The membership and CEU requirements run on different schedules. Paying dues does not replace earning and reporting approved education, and completing CEUs does not replace renewing membership. These rules were checked November 3, 2026.

  • Membership: keep it active through annual renewal.
  • Education: earn the assigned CEU total, with the required approved content mix, during your reporting period.
  • Reporting: submit credits through AAPC's CEU Tracker within that period and retain the supporting certificates.

If you are planning ahead before taking the test, the CPC exam overview explains the subjects and code resources you will study. Pre-certification CEUs are not accepted toward the later requirement, so do not build a renewal credit balance before certification.

For that earlier exam-preparation stage, full CPC prep planned for launch will organize review across 18 sections. Treat exam preparation and documented CEU completion as separate tasks; a study resource is not evidence of approved credit.

When are dues and CEUs due in your account?

Start with your account, not a generic calendar. Copy the membership renewal date, CEU reporting-period start and end dates, required credits, and credits already recorded into your own checklist. If the dates or total are unclear, ask AAPC to resolve them before buying education to fill a presumed gap.

AAPC lists individual membership at $229 annually, checked November 3, 2026. That is a published membership price, not a guaranteed personal renewal quote or an all-in maintenance budget. Confirm the amount in your account and separately price any education you choose. Membership dues remain annual even in a year when your CEU report is not due.

Use two reminders: one for membership renewal and one for CEU reporting. As an editorial planning suggestion, review your credits every six months during a full reporting period, with an earlier check if your first period is shorter. A reminder is useful only if it leaves time to complete an eligible activity and obtain its evidence.

If you are still budgeting for certification, the CPC cost guide for a 2027 exam separates exam purchases from membership and other expenses. Recheck prices when each payment comes due.

Which activities and credit mix count?

AAPC's CEU policy requires approved education or an activity that fits a listed exception. Before enrolling, check the activity's approval, awarded credit amount, curriculum classification and documentation. A healthcare topic alone does not establish that a course qualifies.

For the standard 36-credit requirement, at least two-thirds must be approved Curriculum A. Curriculum B may supply no more than one-third. The arithmetic is 24 credits from A and a maximum of 12 from B.

Consider this illustrative credit plan:

  1. You complete 24 approved Curriculum A credits during your assigned period.
  2. You complete another 12 approved Curriculum B credits during the same period.
  3. You have 36 total, with A supplying two-thirds and B one-third.

That mix meets the numerical rule only if every activity is eligible, properly documented and reported within the actual period. Curriculum B is a maximum allowance, not a requirement to take 12 B credits. Do not substitute a general certificate of attendance for confirmation of the credit's eligibility and classification.

AAPC says some CMS-sponsored education may qualify subject to its evidence requirements. Check the applicable exception before relying on it; do not assume every CMS session automatically supplies AAPC credit.

When choosing subjects to revisit, the CPC section map can remind you of areas beyond your daily work. Then select eligible education for the identified gap.

What records should you keep in CEU Tracker?

AAPC directs members to submit credits through CEU Tracker and retain approval certificates. Keep the evidence with the corresponding activity instead of waiting until the reporting deadline to reconstruct what you completed.

A useful personal record includes:

  • Activity title and provider.
  • Completion date within the assigned reporting period.
  • Approved CEU amount and Curriculum A or B classification.
  • Approval certificate or the evidence required for an applicable exception.
  • Whether you have entered the credit in CEU Tracker and checked the recorded details.

This is a suggested organization checklist, not a claim that every provider uses the same certificate fields. Resolve missing approval information with the provider or AAPC before counting the activity toward your total.

AAPC does not allow repeated use of the same credit or carryover of excess CEUs. Completing more than your current requirement therefore does not reduce the next period's obligation. Keep each period's records distinct and check the completion date before entering an older certificate.

What changes if your first cycle is prorated or you add a credential?

A newly certified member may have a prorated first reporting period. Do not assume that passing the CPC exam starts a fresh, full two-year window requiring exactly 36 credits. Confirm both the period and the assigned requirement in your account.

Adding another credential also changes the calculation. AAPC's published two-year totals, checked November 3, 2026, are:

  • One credential: 36 CEUs.
  • Two credentials: 40 CEUs.
  • Three credentials: 44 CEUs.
  • Four credentials: 48 CEUs.
  • Five or more credentials: 52 CEUs.

These totals are subject to credential-specific requirements. If you add a certification, check your updated account requirement and any content conditions before assuming your existing credit plan covers it. Multiplying 36 by the number of credentials is not AAPC's published schedule.

If your immediate concern is the apprentice designation, use the separate CPC-A removal guide. Verify that process on its own terms instead of treating CEU accumulation as evidence that the designation has been removed.

What should you check before the deadline?

Compare the account's requirement with your completed, documented credits early enough to act. Check the total, the Curriculum A minimum, the Curriculum B limit, completion dates and reporting status. Confirm membership separately, then resolve any discrepancy with AAPC.

If you expect to miss the CEU deadline, contact AAPC about your situation. Its CEU information page advertises a $50 extension fee, checked November 3, 2026, but that price is not a promise that your request will be approved. Obtain the applicable instructions instead of assuming an extension is automatic.

After certification, your next administrative step is to record the actual membership and CEU dates in your account and choose approved education that fits that period.

What if you are still preparing for the exam?

If you have not taken the exam yet, your immediate task is exam review rather than CEU planning. For recall practice, full CPC prep planned for launch will include 540 flashcards for review.

Start with the 20 free CPC practice questions and the free CPC study plan. Use them for exam preparation while keeping future CEU planning tied to AAPC's approval and reporting rules.

For a larger exam-review set, full CPC prep planned for launch will include 1,100 questions. Study resources are not evidence of approved CEUs, and AAPC does not accept pre-certification CEUs, so plan your credits from the dates in your account once you are certified.
