CPC-A to CPC: The Three Apprentice-Removal Routes and Proof

Compare AAPC's three CPC-A removal routes, identify the experience or education evidence you need, and prepare an apprentice-removal application.

Short answer

AAPC lists three routes from CPC-A to CPC: two years of coding employment; one year of employment plus either Practicode or an eligible 80-contact-hour coding course; or Practicode plus an eligible 80-contact-hour course. You submit the required evidence through AAPC's Apprentice Removal Application. Most applications are processed within two to four weeks, according to AAPC, but that is an estimate rather than a guaranteed completion date.

Why did your credential include the A?

AAPC lists three ways to remove the apprentice designation: two years of coding employment, one year of employment plus either Practicode or an eligible 80-contact-hour coding course, or Practicode plus an eligible 80-contact-hour course. Its Exam Agreement says successful CPC candidates who have not submitted proof of two years of experience before testing receive the apprentice designation, CPC-A.

The A therefore does not mean that you failed the exam. It identifies the apprentice designation attached to your credential while the experience or accepted alternative requirements remain to be documented. Passing the exam and completing the removal process are separate steps.

These routes and documentation requirements were checked November 3, 2026. Before enrolling in a course or submitting an application, confirm the current instructions on AAPC's apprentice-removal page.

If you have not tested yet, use the CPC exam eligibility guide to separate entry requirements from the designation you can receive after passing. Then compare your preparation with what is on the CPC exam.

For candidates still preparing to test, full CPC prep planned for launch organizes review into 18 sections. Keep that exam preparation plan separate from the evidence you will need for apprentice removal.

Which of the three removal routes fits your experience?

Start with the experience and eligible education you can already document. AAPC says coding experience from before or after certification can count, including qualifying externships. Do not assume the clock begins only on the day you pass.

RouteWhat you needWhat to gather first
Coding employmentTwo years of coding employmentEmployment verification covering the experience you want AAPC to count
Employment plus one accepted alternativeOne year of coding employment and either Practicode or an eligible 80-contact-hour coding courseEmployment verification plus the evidence for your chosen alternative
Practicode plus a coursePracticode and an eligible 80-contact-hour coding courseEvidence for both components

The distinction between either and both matters. In the second route, you combine one year of employment with one of the two alternatives. In the third route, you need both Practicode and the eligible course; completing only one does not satisfy that route.

Consider these illustrations, which assume AAPC accepts the supporting evidence:

  • A coder who can document two years of qualifying coding employment should examine the employment route before purchasing an additional course solely for removal.
  • A coder with one year of employment and an eligible 80-contact-hour course can examine the second route without treating Practicode as another mandatory component.
  • A candidate without the employment component can examine the Practicode-plus-course route. The course alone does not complete it.

Write down one proposed route and the evidence you have for each part. If an externship or previous position might qualify, check its acceptability with AAPC before counting it toward your total. Do not choose a route solely because it has fewer documents on your first reading.

What must employment verification contain?

AAPC's removal instructions require employment verification from an employer, supervisor or human resources contact. The evidence needs employment dates, company letterhead, a handwritten signature and date, current contact information, and a noneditable PDF format.

Use this document check before submitting:

  1. Match the dates to your route. Read the employment dates together and compare the documented period with the one-year or two-year requirement you are using.
  2. Check the letterhead and signer. Make sure the verification identifies the company and comes from the appropriate employer, supervisor or HR contact.
  3. Check the signature, date and contact details. A letter that describes your experience still needs the required verification details.
  4. Check the saved file. Confirm that the submission copy is a readable, noneditable PDF and that the required information remains visible.

Having experience and providing acceptable proof are different tasks. If a document is missing a required detail, ask the person issuing it to correct the document before you submit. Keep your own copy so you can compare it with any follow-up request.

What counts for Practicode and an 80-hour course?

Under the requirements checked November 3, 2026, Practicode requires at least 600 cases and an overall score of 70%. Check completion against both measures. A case count by itself does not establish the required overall score.

AAPC completion may be recognized automatically, but do not assume every completion record will require no action. The removal instructions note that reset cases can require documentation. Review what your application recognizes and what evidence it asks you to supply.

For the course component, the unit is 80 contact hours, not 80 continuing education units. A document showing CEUs is not the same as evidence of the required contact hours. This distinction is especially useful when comparing a course's marketing description with the paperwork you will receive afterward.

For an equivalent non-AAPC course, the evidence may be an instructor letter, a diploma or certificate, or an unofficial transcript showing the 80 contact hours. Before relying on a course, check two things with the provider and AAPC: whether the course qualifies for this route, and which document will show the required hours.

A practical evidence list has three entries: the course name, the document that shows its contact hours, and the route in which you intend to use it. For Practicode, add your completion record and any documentation needed because of case resets. Resolve a missing component before submitting the application.

Keep apprentice removal separate from ongoing credential maintenance. The CPC renewal and CEU guide addresses that separate calendar; it should not be used to convert renewal credits into course contact hours.

How do you submit and confirm the update?

Submit through AAPC's Apprentice Removal Application, linked from its removal page. AAPC says most applications are processed within two to four weeks, checked November 3, 2026. Treat that as a processing expectation, not a promise that your own designation will change by a particular date.

Before submitting, make one final pass through your chosen route:

  • Does the evidence cover every required component, including both components if you chose Practicode plus a course?
  • Does employment verification include the dates, letterhead, signature, date and current contact information?
  • Does the course evidence show contact hours, and does the Practicode record meet both the case and overall-score requirements?
  • Have you saved the documents you are submitting?

After submission, retain any confirmation and respond to any request for additional evidence. If the status is unclear after the stated processing window, follow up with AAPC using your application details. Wait for official confirmation before representing the designation as updated.

If you have not submitted yet, the immediate next step is to choose the route your evidence supports, obtain the first missing document, and check AAPC's current application instructions.

What if you have not taken the exam yet?

If you are collecting evidence before the exam, reserve separate time for knowledge review. Full CPC prep planned for launch includes 540 flashcards for recall practice. Exam practice does not replace employment verification or establish that AAPC has accepted a removal route.

Keep the application checklist alongside the free CPC study plan. Use the 20 free CPC practice questions to identify study needs, and consult the CPC code-book and code-year explanation when choosing exam resources.

For an exam rehearsal, full CPC prep planned for launch includes a 100-question mock exam. If you pass with the apprentice designation, return to the route table above and start with the first missing document.
