CPC Exam Requirements: Membership, Preparation and Experience
Separate CPC exam entry requirements from recommended preparation and the experience documentation that determines whether you receive CPC-A after passing.
Short answer
You can take the CPC exam without two years of coding experience; AAPC's Exam Agreement says successful candidates who have not submitted proof of that experience before testing receive the apprentice designation, CPC-A. AAPC's registration prerequisites include current membership, a valid unused electronic exam voucher, current contact details, matching government photo ID and review of its exam tutorial. Recommended preparation and training prerequisites are separate from those administrative checks.
What must be in place before you can register?
You can take the CPC exam without two years of coding experience. AAPC's Exam Agreement says that a successful candidate who has not submitted proof of two years of experience before testing receives the apprentice designation, CPC-A. The experience question affects the designation after passing; it is separate from the administrative requirements for entering the exam.
AAPC's registration-prerequisites page lists these checks, checked November 3, 2026:
- Current AAPC membership. Verify your membership status in your account before arranging the exam.
- A valid, unused electronic exam voucher. Confirm that you have the correct voucher and that it remains valid for your intended appointment.
- Current contact information. Review your account details so that the registration information is accurate.
- Government-issued photo ID that matches the exam confirmation. Resolve a mismatch before exam day rather than relying on an explanation at check-in.
- Review of AAPC's exam tutorial. Include the tutorial in your preparation; familiarity with coding content does not replace this check.
The Exam Agreement also says an exam purchase must be used within one year of purchase, checked November 3, 2026. Before buying, compare that window with the time you expect to need for preparation. A voucher is an administrative step, not evidence that your coding knowledge is ready for testing.
Keep a short record of your membership status, voucher validity, ID match and tutorial review. If one item is unclear, settle it with AAPC before committing to an appointment.
Is two years of experience required to sit or to remove the A?
The two-year wording in AAPC's Exam Agreement concerns the apprentice designation. Without the required experience proof submitted before testing, a successful CPC candidate receives CPC-A. It does not mean that a new coder must first find a coding job and work for two years before taking the exam.
Separate two decisions:
- Can you arrange the exam? Check the registration requirements above and prepare for the tested content.
- What designation should you expect after passing? Check whether you have submitted the experience documentation AAPC requires. If not, plan around the apprentice designation rather than assuming it will disappear automatically.
For an experienced coder, having worked in coding and having submitted acceptable proof are different steps. Review your documentation before testing if the designation matters to your immediate plans. For a new coder, do not treat CPC-A as an exam failure: the agreement describes it as the designation for a successful candidate without the prior experience proof.
The later process has its own requirements. Use the guide to CPC-A apprentice removal to compare the current routes and supporting documents. That is a separate task from choosing a test date. Wait for AAPC's official confirmation before representing a credential as awarded.
Do you have to take an AAPC course?
AAPC recommends preparatory training, and its explanation of how to become CPC certified explicitly permits direct exam registration for the experienced coders it describes. Its registration-prerequisites list does not make completion of one particular AAPC course a universal exam-entry condition.
The distinction matters when you read about prerequisites. AAPC identifies anatomy, medical terminology and pathophysiology as foundations for CPC training. Its preparation page discusses prerequisite courses for new CPC students and says relevant knowledge from education or employment can exempt students. Those are training-preparation rules; do not convert them into a claim that every exam candidate must buy the same course.
If you are comparing training providers, ask a precise question: is a stated prerequisite a condition for entering that provider's course, or an AAPC condition for registering for the CPC exam? Keep the answer with the program information so that a school enrollment decision does not get confused with exam eligibility.
Being able to register directly also does not establish readiness. Compare your knowledge with what is on the CPC exam before deciding whether you need foundational instruction, a broader coding course or focused review.
For review organized around the tested areas, full CPC prep planned for launch includes 18 sections. Choose your preparation route according to the gaps you find, rather than treating a practice resource as a substitute for the administrative requirements.
Which foundational subjects should you assess first?
AAPC names anatomy, medical terminology and pathophysiology as foundational knowledge for training. The CPC credential concerns outpatient and physician coding using CPT, ICD-10-CM and HCPCS, together with payer and compliance knowledge. Check both your understanding of medical language and your ability to apply coding resources.
Use the following as an editorial self-assessment, not an AAPC admission test:
- Medical terminology: while reading a practice case, mark words you cannot explain without looking them up.
- Anatomy: note when unfamiliar structures or locations prevent you from understanding the case.
- Pathophysiology: identify passages where you cannot follow the condition being described.
- Coding application: record when you understand the case but cannot decide which coding resource or guideline to consult.
These observations help you choose the next type of study. If you cannot understand the case, spend time on the relevant foundation before doing more coding questions. If the medical wording is clear but the coding decision is not, direct your review toward the coding process involved.
Try the 20 free CPC practice questions and write down why you hesitate. Use the exercise to identify study needs; it does not determine eligibility or certify readiness.
For later review, full CPC prep planned for launch includes 1,100 questions. Keep your own list of knowledge gaps so that additional practice has a clear purpose.
What should a new coder and an experienced coder do next?
A new coder should first assess the foundational subjects, then choose preparation that addresses those gaps. Keep the administrative checklist alongside the study plan, and expect the apprentice designation after passing unless AAPC has accepted the required experience proof. There is no need to turn the two-year wording into a reason to postpone all exam preparation.
An experienced coder should compare everyday work with the exam's scope, check the direct-registration information and review experience documentation before testing. Familiarity with a particular job does not tell you whether you have prepared for every area of the exam. Use the same entry checklist even when the subject matter is familiar.
For either route, finish these three planning steps:
- Write down what remains unresolved. Separate membership, voucher and ID issues from knowledge gaps and experience documentation.
- Choose a preparation timeline. Start with the free CPC study plan. For a future appointment, the CPC study plan for 2027 provides an editorial review schedule you can adapt.
- Confirm the resources for your appointment. Review the existing guide's CPC code-book and code-year explanation before buying books. Recheck AAPC's current instructions before booking, especially if your preparation crosses into another exam year.
As your focus moves from entry requirements to broader practice, full CPC prep planned for launch includes a 100-question mock exam. Your immediate next step is to resolve the first unfinished item on your checklist, then set a study target that reflects your actual starting point.
