CPC Study Plan for 2027: A Twelve-Week Review Schedule

A dated twelve-week CPC review schedule for 2027 candidates, with surgical rotations, recurring diagnosis practice, an exam-year resource transition, and checkpoints for extending your preparation.

Short answer

Build your 2027 CPC study plan around AAPC's 100-question, four-hour exam, with recurring diagnosis practice alongside the six surgical series. The twelve-week schedule below runs from January 18 through April 11, 2027, for an illustrative April 17 target. It is an editorial review plan, not AAPC's required preparation length or a promise of an available appointment. Confirm exam-year resources before timed practice and extend the schedule if foundational knowledge or repeated errors need more work.

What should you check before using a twelve-week plan?

Build your 2027 CPC review around AAPC's 100 multiple-choice questions in one four-hour sitting. The twelve-week plan below gives each surgical series a review rotation while keeping diagnosis coding, guidelines, and mixed cases in the schedule throughout.

This is a review framework for someone with a foundation in coding. AAPC identifies anatomy, medical terminology, and pathophysiology as foundational knowledge. If reading a clinical description or navigating the code books is still unfamiliar, add a foundation phase before week 1. Twelve weeks is an editorial choice, not an official training requirement or evidence that a beginner will become job-ready in that time.

Start with the 20 free CPC practice questions and record why each difficult question slowed you down: an unfamiliar term, a missed instruction, an uncertain code choice, or a slow lookup. They are a small sample for finding study needs, not a full exam, so use them to identify work to investigate rather than to estimate a probability of passing. Compare your notes with the CPC section breakdown before assigning study time.

For a section-based review structure, full CPC prep planned for launch is organized across 18 sections. First decide which foundations need attention and whether the example dates fit your starting point.

How does a 2027 target change your materials and dates?

AAPC's Exam Agreement says U.S. exams update each January 1 to reflect that year's codes and guidelines. Under that standing policy, a U.S. CPC appointment in 2027 uses the 2027 exam code year. The policy and format were checked November 3, 2026; recheck AAPC before purchasing resources or booking. This schedule does not assume an announced 2027 blueprint revision.

Use three resource checkpoints:

  1. Before the review begins: identify the year of every book and practice resource. If earlier-year materials helped you learn the basics, mark those materials clearly so their answers do not become your final authority for 2027.
  2. Before each topic rotation: confirm the relevant instructions in your exam-year resources. Transfer useful concepts from older notes, but check code-specific details again instead of copying an old answer unchanged.
  3. Before timed mixed work: settle the permitted reference editions and the format you intend to use, then rehearse with those resources. The CPC code-book and code-year guide explains the underlying choices; confirm the current rules with AAPC.

Keep the ICD-10-CM guideline period separate from the exam calendar. The published FY 2027 ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines apply from October 1, 2026, through September 30, 2027, as checked November 3, 2026. That fiscal-year effective period does not move AAPC's annual exam update to October.

The example below uses Monday, January 18, through Sunday, April 11, 2027, as twelve study weeks. April 12–16 is an optional final check period before a hypothetical Saturday, April 17 appointment. These are planning dates, not a reserved seat. Use the 2027 CPC registration timeline to handle booking separately; begin from an actual appointment confirmation when you have one.

What should you review in each of the twelve weeks?

AAPC currently assigns six questions to each of the six surgical series: 36 questions altogether. That supports giving surgery sustained attention. It does not mean six equal weeks suit every candidate. Diagnosis questions also appear in CPT sections, so continue diagnosis and guideline practice beyond its first scheduled week.

The dates and assignments below are editorial. Adjust the length of a rotation to your practice log while retaining coverage of every section.

Week and illustrative 2027 datesMain reviewEnd-of-week task
1: January 18–24Terminology, anatomy, and compliance; identify gaps in foundational knowledgeExplain unfamiliar terms from practice and locate the governing rule for each compliance error
2: January 25–31ICD-10-CM, coding guidelines, and HCPCS Level IITrace diagnosis choices from the Index to the Tabular List and record unresolved guideline questions
3: February 1–7CPT 10000 series: skin and related surgeryWork a short mixed set including diagnosis and earlier foundation topics
4: February 8–14CPT 20000 series: musculoskeletal surgeryReview the relevant section instructions before comparing procedure choices
5: February 15–21CPT 30000 series: respiratory, cardiovascular, hemic, and lymphatic surgeryRevisit prior surgical errors and practice identifying the documented procedure
6: February 22–28CPT 40000 series: digestive surgeryComplete a mixed set spanning the surgical series reviewed so far
7: March 1–7CPT 50000 series: urinary, reproductive, and endocrine surgeryPair procedure practice with diagnosis lookups and guideline checks
8: March 8–14CPT 60000 series: nervous-system surgeryRecheck weak areas across all six surgical rotations
9: March 15–21Radiology plus pathology and laboratoryCompare similar choices using the applicable book instructions; keep earlier topics in mixed practice
10: March 22–28Medicine, evaluation and management, and anesthesiaReview each section's instructions and identify which needs an extra block
11: March 29–April 4Mixed questions and integrated casesWork across CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS and separate knowledge errors from timing errors
12: April 5–11A full rehearsal and target-date decision on April 5, followed by targeted repairReview every wrong or uncertain answer and record what still needs repair

For the radiology half of week 9, the CPC radiology questions guide shows how to identify the documented service before comparing answer choices.

Do not postpone all case work until week 11. Add short mixed records as you learn the relevant sections, then make integration the main focus in week 11. The CPC case-study guide develops that record-reading workflow.

For a larger practice pool across these rotations, full CPC prep planned for launch includes 1,100 questions. Choose practice by the task you need to improve, then verify uncertain answers against the applicable reference.

How should you combine book work, recall, and mixed questions?

Repeat a simple study cycle during each rotation:

  • Read and locate: review the relevant book instructions, then practice finding the material again without relying on an old page number.
  • Retrieve: explain a term or rule in your own words before checking it. Record the precise part you forgot.
  • Apply: work questions with the references open and identify the documented fact or instruction that decides the answer.
  • Mix and repair: include earlier topics, review errors, and revisit the underlying rule before trying fresh practice.

For diagnosis coding, the FY 2027 Official Guidelines require locating the term in the Alphabetic Index and verifying the code in the Tabular List. Make that full sequence a habit rather than stopping when the Index produces a plausible answer.

Keep your practice log separate from materials intended for the exam. AAPC's agreement permits book notes concerning daily coding work but prohibits copied practice or exam questions. Summarize the concept you need to learn without copying a question into a reference book.

For the recall portion, full CPC prep planned for launch includes 540 flashcards. Recall supports the rotation; keep book navigation and applied questions in the same week.

What makes CPC practice difficult for your starting point?

The difficulty comes from doing three tasks on one clock: reading the record, applying the rule, and looking up the code. AAPC's exam asks for this across 100 questions in one four-hour sitting, ending with ten cases that combine CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS. As an editorial rule of thumb, unfamiliar anatomy, terminology, or pathophysiology slows the reading, while a coder experienced in one specialty may slow on lookups outside daily work.

No official CPC pass-rate series or universal study length was verified as of November 3, 2026, so this plan does not put a number on difficulty. The CPC passing score guide explains how a pass rate differs from the 70% standard. Use your log to see which task slows you.

When should your practice log change the schedule?

Review progress at the end of weeks 2, 6, and 10. Those checkpoints are suggestions, not AAPC requirements. For each session, log whether the set was new or repeated, whether it was timed or assisted, the error type, and your next action. Timed here means working against the clock with only your intended references; assisted means using explanations, notes, or other help as you go.

The three sessions below are fictional, and the error types are editorial labels, not AAPC categories.

Fictional sessionSet and conditionsWhat the log showsError typeNext action
Week 2New set, assistedMisses trace to terms you cannot explainFoundationsExtend that phase before adding more unfamiliar material
Week 6Repeated set, timedThe score rises, but a fresh set misses the same instructionRuleAdd targeted reading and fresh examples before speed work
Week 10New mixed set, timedAnswers are sound, but lookups use up the sessionPacingKeep the rotation and add navigation practice, with a rehearsal from the CPC time-management guide

The week 6 row shows why conditions belong in the log: a higher score on a repeated set may only mean you remember the items, so test the rule on fresh questions. If single-topic practice is comfortable but mixed work breaks down, redistribute time toward selecting the relevant rule from an unfamiliar record.

Preserve time for later sections when adding a remedial block. If that requires extending beyond April 17, revise the target and check the current appointment-change terms before acting. A completed calendar alone does not establish readiness.

What should your final readiness review include?

Rehearse the current exam's 100-question, four-hour workload using suitable practice materials and your intended references. In this example, sit it on April 5 or the weekend before, so the result is ready for the date decision below. Then review wrong answers, guesses, and unusually slow correct answers, and record the rehearsal in your log. As an editorial rule, a new timed set tells you more than a repeated or assisted one. To choose what to rehearse with, use the CPC practice exams guide for practice sources and the CPC study guide overview for review materials.

AAPC's passing standard is 70% or higher, but reaching 70% on a practice set is not a validated prediction of an official pass.

For that final stage, full CPC prep planned for launch includes a 100-question mock. Reserve enough time afterward to review the reasoning behind each uncertain answer.

Decide on April 5 whether the target date still holds, not at the end of the plan. If major gaps remain, move the appointment and extend the review. The dates below apply AAPC's current rules, checked November 3, 2026, to the April 17 example; recheck them for your own appointment.

  • April 5: twelve days ahead, inside the free testing-center change period of more than ten days. AAPC's table does not clearly define exactly ten days ahead, April 7.
  • April 8–15: testing-center changes, nine to two days ahead, cost $25 paid to Meazure Learning. Remote changes stay free only when made more than 48 hours ahead.
  • April 15, at the appointment time: exactly 48 hours ahead. Your print or eBook selection must be final by then, and the Exam Agreement treats changes less than 48 hours before testing as a no-show with forfeiture.

Use April 12–16 to resolve remaining errors and confirm current exam instructions, checking first that your resources match the confirmed appointment. This optional period is not enough to learn a missing section; if a new major gap appears, check which limit applies to your format before acting. The 2027 CPC registration timeline sets out the change terms, and the 2027 CPC exam-day checklist covers the final week.

Your next step is to choose a provisional target, log your baseline errors, and adapt the free CPC study plan alongside these rotations.
