CPC Study Guide: What AAPC's Official Book Covers and Who Needs It
What AAPC's CPC study guide includes, how it differs from the three approved code books, how to check the edition for a 2027 exam, and who should buy it, skip it, or start with something else.
Short answer
AAPC's 2026 CPC Study Guide has twenty chapters and more than 200 review questions with answers and rationales, listed at $99.95 for members and $149.95 for non-members as checked November 6, 2026. AAPC describes it as a review rather than an introduction to coding, and it is not among AAPC's listed registration prerequisites, so it suits candidates who already have the foundations and want a structured review. It does not replace your code books: AAPC's testing-center rules keep study guides out of the exam, and the approved list names only the CPT, ICD-10-CM and HCPCS Level II books. We could not verify whether a 2027 edition exists, so check the edition before you buy for a 2027 exam.
What is AAPC's official CPC study guide?
AAPC's 2026 CPC Study Guide has twenty chapters and more than 200 review questions with answers and rationales, listed at $99.95 for members and $149.95 for non-members on AAPC's product page, checked November 6, 2026. AAPC describes it as a review, and a study guide is not among the registration prerequisites AAPC lists, so you need one only if a structured review fits your starting point.
The table gives AAPC's description of its own product. We read the product page, not the book, so we have not tested it.
| Detail | What AAPC's page listed on November 6, 2026 |
|---|---|
| Edition | 2026 CPC Study Guide, ISBN 979-8-89258-106-6 |
| Format | Print or eBook, at the same listed prices |
| Structure | Twenty chapters, with ten Test Your Knowledge questions in each |
| Coverage | Anatomy and terminology, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS Level II, CPT, modifiers, each body system, E/M, anesthesia, radiology, and pathology and laboratory |
Our reading of that page did not show three things: whether a 2027 edition exists, whether the book may be used at the exam, and how it relates to your code books. The sections below answer the last two from AAPC's other pages and tell you how to handle the first. Confirm the price at checkout.
Is it a beginner text or a review?
It is a review. AAPC's product page says the book "is not an introduction to coding but a review of professional fee coding concepts." As we read that, ten questions per chapter can check a topic you already know, but they are not a way to learn it for the first time.
AAPC's other pages point the same way. AAPC names anatomy, terminology, and pathophysiology as foundational knowledge for training, and its CPC Preparation Course page, checked November 6, 2026, presents that course as suited to beginners with no coding experience. Neither fact means every candidate must buy a course; the CPC exam requirements guide separates training from what AAPC requires for registration.
If you are unsure which side you are on, try this editorial check. Work the 20 free CPC practice questions, with your code books open if you have them, and write down why you missed or hesitated on each one. If you know the terms and book instructions but applied them badly, a review fits. If the terms, the anatomy, or the book instructions are new to you, start with foundational instruction and come back to a review later. This is a rough sort of your gaps, not a readiness score.
How is it different from your three code books?
The study guide is for preparation, and the code books are your references during the exam. AAPC's approved code books page, checked November 3, 2026, names three for the CPC: the AMA's CPT Professional Edition, plus ICD-10-CM and HCPCS Level II books from any publisher.
AAPC's exam-day page for testing centers, checked the same day, says study guides cannot come in. That rule comes from the exam-day page, not the product page. The study guide is not on the approved list either, so do not plan on having it at a home exam.
| Material | Its job | On exam day |
|---|---|---|
| AAPC CPC Study Guide | Reviews concepts and checks them with chapter questions | Stays out |
| CPT Professional Edition | Your procedure-coding reference | Approved |
| ICD-10-CM book | Your diagnosis-coding reference | Approved |
| HCPCS Level II book | Your HCPCS Level II reference | Approved |
| AAPC practice exams | Six 50-question exams with feedback, sold in two bundles of three | Not used |
| Free CPC study plan | Organizes your review | Not used |
| 20 free CPC practice questions | A small first sample | Not used |
| Full CPC prep | Practice beyond a book's chapter sets | Not used; not available yet |
The last row is not available yet: 1,100 questions across 18 sections are planned for launch in full CPC prep, for practice beyond a book's chapter sets.
Two habits follow from this table. The first is editorial; the second rests on AAPC's rules.
- Do your lookups in the code books. They are what you will have in front of you, so build speed in them rather than relying on what you remember from a chapter.
- Keep study-guide content out of your code books. AAPC's CPC exam FAQ, checked November 6, 2026, allows highlighting, underlining, tabs for navigation, and brief handwritten notes tied to everyday coding work. It does not allow supplemental pages or copied exam or practice questions, and the proctor checks your materials. We would treat the guide's review questions as practice questions and leave them out.
Which edition should you use for a 2027 exam?
As an editorial rule, use the edition that matches your exam year if AAPC offers one. AAPC's Exam Agreement, checked November 3, 2026, says U.S. exams are updated annually on January 1 for that year's codes and guidelines. The product page listed the 2026 edition on November 6, 2026, and we could not verify whether a 2027 edition exists or when one might appear.
That matters most if you start reviewing now for a 2027 test date, because you may have to decide before you know. This table is our advice, not an AAPC rule.
| Your situation | What we would do |
|---|---|
| Testing in 2026 | Use the listed 2026 edition if you want the book; its year matches your exam year |
| Testing in 2027, and AAPC lists a 2027 edition | Buy that edition if you want the book, and confirm the year at checkout |
| Testing in 2027, and AAPC still lists only the 2026 edition | Ask AAPC whether a newer edition is coming; if you buy the 2026 edition, use it for concepts and confirm anything code-specific in the approved books you will use |
| Offered an older used copy | Treat it as concept review at most, because each January 1 update moves it further from your exam year |
Do not confuse this with the code book rule. AAPC's allowance for previous-year print books covers the references you bring in. It does not make an older study guide current, and study guides stay out either way. Our CPC exam overview explains the book and code-year rules for a 2027 appointment, so settle those first, then read the edition year on AAPC's page before you pay.
What else do you need at your starting point?
What you need next depends on where you start. The table is an editorial buying suggestion, not an AAPC rule and not a prediction of any result.
| Starting point | The study guide | Put first | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| New to coding | Skip it for now | Foundational instruction, then coding training | AAPC calls the book a review, so it is not a substitute for a foundation |
| Finished a coding course | Optional | Your course materials and code books | Check whether you already have this book or similar review questions |
| Experienced coder preparing directly | Optional, if you want a chapter-by-chapter refresher | Your approved books and a list of your weak sections | AAPC says the experienced coders it describes may register directly for the exam |
| Retaker | Only for the chapters you need | The areas AAPC reported at or below 65% | A failed attempt gives you a list of weak areas, which is a better guide than reading the book in order |
New coders can use how to get CPC certified to compare training routes. Retakers should start with the CPC retake guide, which turns the report into priorities.
If you do buy the guide, expect a second recommendation. The product page recommends AAPC's own CPC Online Practice Exams and says they add 150 questions, which matches one bundle of three 50-question exams, not all six. Each bundle was listed at $79.95 for members or $209.85 otherwise on November 6, 2026, so the guide plus one bundle comes to $179.90 for a member or $359.80 for a non-member, by our arithmetic. AAPC lists current membership among its registration prerequisites, so if you plan to register, compare at the member price. Our guide to AAPC's practice exams covers what those bundles include and what the page leaves unstated.
If unfamiliar terms keep slowing your review, 540 flashcards are planned for launch in full CPC prep. Until then, keep your own list of those terms beside your book work.
How should you use it inside a study schedule?
Use the book as one layer of a schedule, not as the schedule. The CPC study plan for 2027 sets the weeks and checkpoints, so this page only places the book inside them. These steps are editorial.
- Assign chapters to weeks. Put each chapter in the plan week that covers the same topic, so reading and lookup practice happen together.
- Weight by the exam, not by the chapter count. Twenty chapters are not twenty equal shares. AAPC's section breakdown gives 36 of 100 questions to the six surgical series and 3 to compliance.
- Work chapter questions with your code books open. Confirm each answer in the approved book you plan to use, and note which instruction decided it.
- Log misses separately. Keep that record outside your code books, in your own words.
- Move to practice beyond the chapters. Chapter questions follow the topic you just read. They cannot show how you handle 100 questions, including 10 final cases, in one four-hour sitting.
For that last step, the CPC practice exam guide helps you choose a source. A 100-question mock is planned for launch in full CPC prep, matching the exam's question count.
Your next step is to choose a test month, find your row in the starting-point table, and check the edition on AAPC's page before you buy anything. Then use the free CPC study plan to organize your preparation around that test month.
