ACE Personal Trainer Certification (ACE CPT) guideFormat & scoring
ACE CPT Exam Format: 150 Questions, 3 Hours and About 10% Silent Video Items
The NCCA-accredited ACE Personal Trainer exam has 150 multiple-choice questions in three hours: 125 scored, 25 experimental, and about 10% built around a short silent video. Here is what each question style asks, how to pace it, and how the test-site and online versions differ.
Short answer
The NCCA-accredited ACE Certified Personal Trainer exam has 150 multiple-choice questions and a three-hour limit. Only 125 questions are scored; the other 25 are experimental and don't count. Each question has one correct answer and three incorrect options. About 10% of the questions show a brief video with no audio of someone performing an exercise, then ask you to judge it. You take it at a proctored test site or online with a live remote proctor, with an on-screen four-function calculator, and you see your result as soon as you submit.
The ACE CPT exam format at a glance
This is the format of the NCCA-accredited ACE Certified Personal Trainer Exam, from ACE's Certification and Recertification Handbook (revised September 2026) and its scheduling page, both checked on October 27, 2026. The open-book certificate exam is a different test with 100 questions.

Scored and experimental questions on the ACE CPT
The handbook says the 25 experimental questions "are being evaluated to determine if they perform well enough statistically to be introduced as scored items on a future exam." Only the 125 scored items decide whether you pass. ACE doesn't say that experimental items are marked on screen, so treat every question as if it counts.
The scored items follow the domain weights in the ACE Personal Trainer Exam Content Outline. The outline calls each weight "the approximate percentage of exam questions," so the counts below are Passy's rounding, not a fixed split:
| Domain | Weight | About this many of the 125 scored questions |
|---|---|---|
| I. Client Onboarding and Assessments | 23% | 29 |
| II. Program Design and Implementation | 31% | 39 |
| III. Program Modification and Progression | 27% | 34 |
| IV. Risk Management, Professional Conduct, and Ethical Business Practices | 19% | 24 |
The rounded counts add to 126 rather than 125, which is a reminder that they're estimates. The outline also says "all tasks are assessed on every exam," but not every knowledge and skill statement appears on every form. You can see how planned ACE CPT practice splits its 1,100 questions by domain along the same weights.
Video-based questions on the ACE CPT
ACE's Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Instructor exams include video items. The handbook describes each one as "one brief video (with no audio) of a person performing a common exercise movement followed by a multiple-choice question." They're designed to test practical skills in assessing movement and exercise technique, and in deciding whether to continue or modify an exercise based on what you see.
At about 10% of 150 questions, expect roughly 15 video items. That count is Passy's arithmetic. ACE doesn't say how many are scored or experimental.
Without sound, the clip can't tell you what the trainer said or what the client feels. The decision rests on what you can see: joint alignment, which segment moves first, where the movement compensates. The outline's skill statements point to the same targets: "identifying movement-pattern deviations" and "recognizing and correcting compensatory movement patterns." The foundational patterns it lists are bend-and-lift, single-leg, push, pull and rotation.
Passy's practice questions are text-based and can't reproduce a video item. To practice the skill itself, watch real movement: ACE's free ACE Answers resources include video demonstrations and an exercise library. Watch a clip once without pausing, name the deviation, then decide whether you would continue, cue or regress the exercise. For the terms themselves, planned ACE CPT flashcards cover the five movement patterns and the other frameworks the outline names.
The three ACE CPT question styles
The handbook explains three kinds of multiple-choice question:
- Recall questions test facts and terminology. ACE says only "a relatively small number" appear, because they test memory rather than problem solving.
- Application questions set a job situation and ask what to do. ACE's example gives a sedentary new client's flexibility-test result and asks which stretch matters most in the first program.
- Analysis questions ask how pieces of information fit together. ACE's example asks you to work out total calories and the share from fat in a whole bag of candy from its food label.
Stems come in three shapes: a direct question, an incomplete statement, or a "best answer" question with words such as BEST or MOST. ACE says distractors "usually contain common errors" and are often drawn from the same category as the right answer, so two options can look alike. It also says, "There is no hidden meaning or attempt to be tricky."
Math appears through application. ACE Answers says the exam uses basic arithmetic and "a few formulas," which it collects on a free formulas sheet. The on-screen calculator handles the arithmetic, so know which formula a scenario calls for.
Pacing the ACE CPT: 72 seconds a question
Three hours for 150 questions is 72 seconds each on average. ACE's own tip: "You should be halfway through the exam (or slightly more) when half of your time is up." Three checkpoints follow from that:
| Time used | Aim to be past question |
|---|---|
| 45 minutes | 38 |
| 1 hour 30 minutes | 75 |
| 2 hours 15 minutes | 113 |
The handbook also says to answer every question ("there is no penalty for guessing"), that response options are randomized, and that "first instincts are best," though you should change an answer if you feel strongly about it. A video item may take longer than a recall item, which is one more reason not to let any single question run past two minutes.
Holding that pace for three hours is a skill in itself. To rehearse the 150-question, 3-hour sitting with the mock exam planned for full ACE CPT prep, schedule it two to three weeks before your date.
Test site vs online: ACE CPT rules that change the experience
| Live test site | Online, live remote proctor | |
|---|---|---|
| Breaks | ACE says breaks are permitted at exam sites | None. Leaving the room ends the session |
| Writing | Personal paper and pencils aren't allowed | No scratch paper or pens. The test software has an Open Notes feature |
| Calculator | On-screen four-function | On-screen four-function |
| Room | Other people may be taking different exams with different rules | Alone in a private room, at a desk, with your back to the door |
| What you can wear | Sweaters and jackets without pockets; no watches or jewelry other than engagement and wedding rings | Sweaters and sweatshirts without pockets or hoods; no earbuds, smart watches or smart glasses |
| Clock | 3 hours | 3 hours, starting at the first question, after check-in |
Two gaps in ACE's information are worth knowing. ACE doesn't say whether the clock stops during a live-site break, so assume it keeps running. And ACE Answers says candidates "will also have access to scratch paper and a pencil," while the scheduling page bars personal paper at sites and all scratch paper online. Don't build your method on writing things down. The requirements and registration guide covers booking, ID and equipment for each mode.
ACE CPT languages and extra time
The handbook lists the Personal Trainer exam in English plus Arabic, Finnish, Korean, Simplified Chinese and Thai. Online exams are English only, so a translated exam means a test site. If English isn't your primary language, ACE says you may qualify for extra time (4.5 hours instead of 3) by sending documentation before you register. Online, extra time ("time plus one half") is the only accommodation available.
Will the ACE CPT format change in 2027?
Nothing is announced. ACE's blog post of June 20, 2023 says the current outline went live on August 21, 2023, and the outline says ACE runs a role delineation study every five years. The last one was in July 2022, so a new outline in the next few years is possible, but ACE has given no date as of October 27, 2026. ACE also rotates new questions into its exams every year, so a 2027 form will differ from a 2025 form while following the same blueprint.
