How Hard Is the ACE CPT Exam? ACE's 73% Pass Rate and What Trips Candidates Up

ACE's handbook reports that 73% of Personal Trainer certification candidates passed in 2025. Here is what that number does and doesn't mean, the features that make the accredited exam harder than a recall test, and the ones that make it easier than its reputation.

Short answer

The NCCA-accredited ACE Personal Trainer exam is a real test but a passable one. ACE's handbook reports that 73% of the 7,105 Personal Trainer certification candidates in 2025 passed, so roughly one in four did not. What makes it hard is that most questions ask you to apply knowledge to a client situation rather than recall a fact, about 10% show a silent video of a movement to judge, and ACE says the knowledge required isn't contained in any single textbook. It has no practical component, no trick questions and no penalty for guessing.

ACE's own number: 73% passed in 2025

ACE publishes its pass rates. Appendix D of the Certification and Recertification Handbook (revised September 2026) gives these figures for 2025:

ACE certification examCandidates in 2025Pass rate
Personal Trainer7,10573%
Group Fitness Instructor5,52572%
Health Coach88462%
Medical Exercise Specialist9957%

For the Personal Trainer exam, 27% of 7,105 is about 1,900 candidates who didn't pass that year (Passy's arithmetic). That's a meaningful share, but most people who sit the exam pass it.

What the figure doesn't tell you:

  • First attempts vs retakes. ACE gives one combined figure and doesn't split first-time candidates from repeat ones.
  • Your own odds. A group pass rate isn't a personal probability. How you prepare matters far more than the average.
  • Older numbers. Third-party pages still quote ACE pass rates of around 65% or 70% from earlier years. Use the figure in the current handbook.

These rates are for the proctored, NCCA-accredited exams. The open-book certificate exam allows unlimited attempts, and the ACE pages Passy checked publish no pass rate for it.

What makes the ACE CPT harder than a recall test

Most ACE CPT questions are about decisions, not definitions

The handbook says ACE uses "a relatively small number of recall questions" because they test memory "rather than apply it to solve problems." Most items are application questions (a client situation and what to do next) or analysis questions (several pieces of information to combine). Knowing that a test exists isn't enough. You need to know when it's appropriate, what the result means for this client, and what you would change.

Each question has one best answer, and ACE says the wrong options "usually contain common errors" and are often drawn from the same category as the right one. Two choices can both sound reasonable until you read the stem's BEST or MOST closely. Reviewing why each wrong option is wrong teaches more than reviewing the right answer alone, which is why you might see how planned ACE CPT practice explains each option, right or wrong.

ACE CPT video items test what you can see

About 10% of questions show a short video, with no audio, of a person doing a common exercise, and ask you to assess the movement and decide whether to continue or modify it. Reading about a knee caving inward on a squat is not the same as spotting it on a moving clip. The ACE CPT exam format guide explains these items and how to practice for them.

One ACE textbook isn't the whole syllabus

The ACE Personal Trainer Exam Content Outline is direct about it: "the knowledge and skills required to pass these exams are not solely represented in any single text." The handbook says each question must be referenced to an appropriate text or to current guidelines and position papers from bodies such as ACSM, AHA, ACOG and USDA. The outline itself names screening and practice guidelines (PAR-Q+, ACSM), privacy, workplace-safety and labor laws (HIPAA, OSHA, FLSA) and dietary approaches (DASH, vegan, low-carbohydrate).

Domains III and IV cover nearly half of the ACE CPT

Program Modification and Progression (27%) and Risk Management, Professional Conduct, and Ethical Business Practices (19%) together make up 46% of the exam. Candidates who study mostly anatomy and program design can find these the least familiar. ACE's 2023 announcement of the current outline says "the largest change" was in Domain IV, with "an expanded focus on risk management, ethical business practices, and staying current with industry standards and scope of practice." The outline lists, among others:

  • negligence through acts of commission and omission
  • the four risk-management approaches: avoidance, transfer, reduction and retention
  • the components of a business plan and a marketing plan
  • signs of overtraining and criteria for terminating exercise
  • when to refer a client to an allied health professional

Three hours of focus, with no break online

The exam runs three hours. Online, ACE allows no breaks of any kind, and leaving the room ends the session. Stamina is part of the test, especially for people who haven't sat a long exam in years, and the planned ACE CPT mock exam runs the full three hours so you can find out before test day.

What makes the ACE CPT easier than its reputation

  • No practical component. ACE Answers says plainly, "there is no practical component to the exam." You won't demonstrate exercises or run an assessment on a person.
  • No need to memorize every protocol. ACE Answers says you're not expected to memorize each assessment's exact steps or every value in the tables. Know each assessment's purpose, who it suits, its contraindications and what the results mean. A few values do matter: ACE gives the example that a BMI of 30 or more places a client in the obesity category.
  • No tricks. The handbook says there is "no hidden meaning or attempt to be tricky."
  • No guessing penalty. Answer every question.
  • Simple math. ACE Answers says only basic arithmetic and a few formulas appear, and there's an on-screen calculator.
  • A blueprint you can see. The outline lists every task and the knowledge and skills under it. ACE recommends using it as your study map.

Who tends to find the ACE CPT harder

This part is Passy's editorial view, not an ACE statement. Based on how ACE describes its questions, these situations call for extra time:

SituationWhy it can be harderWhat helps
Strong gym experience, little coaching or screening backgroundDomains I and IV test intake, referral, documentation and scope, not lifting knowledgeStudy the onboarding and risk tasks line by line
Studying from one memorized textbookACE draws on current guidelines beyond any one textRead the outline's "knowledge of" lists and check each guideline it names
Practicing only flashcard-style recallMost items are application and analysisPractice with scenario questions and explain each wrong option
Testing online without a long practice sessionThree hours with no breaksDo at least one full timed rehearsal

How to tell if you're ready for the ACE CPT

ACE suggests a few honest checks in ACE Answers: explain each topic out loud as if to a client, practice the assessments on a friend or family member, and use practice tests as a diagnostic rather than retaking them until you remember the answers. ACE warns that repeating the same practice test "may lead to memorization of correct answers, rather than a deeper understanding of the content."

A practical readiness signal is steady accuracy on questions you haven't seen before in all four domains, not just your favorite one, plus one full-length timed sitting. The ACE CPT study time guide shows where to place that rehearsal in an 8-, 12- or 16-week plan.

Your next step for a hard ACE CPT domain

Take the 20 free ACE CPT practice questions and sort your misses into the four domains. If most land in Domains III and IV, give those two more of your weekly time than their weights alone suggest. To see how much material that is, see the planned ACE CPT question counts for Domains III and IV: 297 and 209 questions of the planned 1,100.
