Should AWS Cloud Practitioner Be Your First AWS Certification? CLF-C02 vs AI Practitioner and Solutions Architect

AWS built Cloud Practitioner for people new to the cloud, including those without an IT background. Compare it with AI Practitioner and Solutions Architect – Associate on length, fee, pass mark and recommended experience, then pick the right first exam.

Short answer

Take AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) first if you are new to the cloud or work alongside technical teams: AWS designed it for candidates who may not have an IT background and says candidates could have up to 6 months of AWS exposure, but that this is not required. Choose AI Practitioner (AIF-C01) first if your goal is AI and generative AI on AWS. Consider going straight to Solutions Architect – Associate if you already have IT or AWS experience; AWS recommends at least a year of hands-on design work for it. No AWS exam has prerequisites.

AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner is the exam AWS points beginners to. Its certification page calls it "a good starting point" for people with no prior IT or cloud experience who are moving into a cloud career, and for line-of-business staff such as sales, marketing, product or project managers who need cloud literacy. AWS's Before Testing page adds that every AWS Certification can be earned without prerequisites, so the question is fit, not permission.

What AWS says CLF-C02 validates, and what it leaves out

The CLF-C02 exam guide lists what a passing candidate can do:

  • Explain the value of the AWS Cloud
  • Understand and explain the AWS shared responsibility model
  • Understand the AWS Well-Architected Framework
  • Understand security best practices
  • Understand AWS Cloud costs, economics and billing practices
  • Describe and position the core services: compute, network, database and storage
  • Identify AWS services for common use cases

The same guide says the target candidate has up to 6 months of exposure to AWS Cloud design, implementation or operations, and the certification page adds that this exposure "is not required." Just as useful is the list of tasks AWS puts out of scope for this candidate: coding, designing cloud architecture, troubleshooting, implementation, and load and performance testing.

That last list is the clearest test of fit. If your job will involve building or fixing things on AWS, CLF-C02 is a vocabulary-and-concepts exam, not proof that you can do that work. If you need to understand, explain, buy, sell or manage cloud work, it matches what you need.

CLF-C02, AI Practitioner and Solutions Architect – Associate side by side

Two details matter more than the table suggests. AI Practitioner's guide lists ordering and matching questions in addition to the two types CLF-C02 uses, and its five domains cover AI and ML fundamentals, generative AI, foundation models, responsible AI, and security, compliance and governance for AI, not cloud fundamentals. And Solutions Architect – Associate is not just a longer version of CLF-C02: AWS describes it as focused on designing cost- and performance-optimized solutions.

If CLF-C02 is your pick, see how the planned CLF-C02 prep covers all four content domains once it launches.

Who should start with Cloud Practitioner

CLF-C02 is the sensible first exam when one of these describes you:

  • You are changing careers into cloud from a non-IT field. This is the group AWS names first on the certification page and in its 2023 CLF-C02 announcement.
  • You work next to technical teams. Sales, marketing, product and project management, customer service and other line-of-business roles are the examples AWS gives.
  • You are in IT but new to AWS and want a structured tour of the service catalog before an Associate exam. AWS's 2023 announcement names entry-level IT professionals as a target group for this reason.
  • You will be asked about cost and support. Billing, Pricing, and Support is one of CLF-C02's four domains (12% of scored content), alongside Cloud Concepts, Security and Compliance, and Cloud Technology and Services.

When AI Practitioner makes a better first exam

AIF-C01 fits better when your work is about using AI on AWS rather than about the cloud platform in general. AWS describes its target candidate as someone who uses, but does not necessarily build, AI/ML solutions on AWS. Length, fee and pass mark are the same as CLF-C02, so neither is the cheaper or "easier-looking" option on paper; the content decides.

If you plan to take both, the order matters less than the fact that the second exam is cheaper once you hold the first (see below).

When to skip ahead to Solutions Architect – Associate

AWS's Solutions Architect – Associate page recommends at least a year of hands-on experience designing cloud solutions on AWS. It also says candidates with 1–3 years of IT experience have prepared for it as a starting point, and that candidates "who do not have any IT work experience would benefit from first earning" Cloud Practitioner.

Read that as a practical rule:

  • Some IT background and a plan to build on AWS: going straight to Solutions Architect – Associate is a reasonable choice, and expect to pick up the CLF-C02 fundamentals along the way.
  • No IT work experience: AWS itself suggests Cloud Practitioner first.
  • Unsure: try AWS's free 20-question Official Practice Question Set for CLF-C02 on Skill Builder, or Passy's free CLF-C02 practice questions. If the vocabulary feels new, start with CLF-C02.

How a first AWS certification lowers the cost of the second

Two official rules make CLF-C02 less of a detour than it looks:

  • A 50% discount voucher after you pass. AWS's benefits page says certified individuals get access to a 50% discount voucher toward recertification or any other exam. A 150 USD Associate exam would then cost 75 USD before taxes (Passy's arithmetic).
  • Higher exams renew Cloud Practitioner. The recertification page lists passing any Associate-level or Professional-level exam as a way to renew the Cloud Practitioner certification for three more years.

So a path of CLF-C02 now and an Associate exam within three years keeps both active without retaking CLF-C02. The exam cost guide covers the voucher's limits, including why it can't pay for your first AWS exam.

When you compare prep options, you can also compare the planned 30-, 90- and 180-day access periods for CLF-C02 prep; checkout isn't open yet.

Your next step if CLF-C02 is the one

Read the CLF-C02 exam format guide so the 65 questions hold no surprises, then decide how many weeks you need with the CLF-C02 study time guide.

When you are ready to rehearse, the 65-question timed mock exam planned for full CLF-C02 prep is built to the same length and time limit as the real exam.
