AWS Cloud Practitioner Practice Exams: Which Are Official, Which Are Free, and How to Review Your Misses

AWS publishes free and subscription CLF-C02 practice on Skill Builder, and its official practice tests repeat the same questions on every attempt. See what each one includes, an order that gets the most from them, a method for reviewing misses, and why exam dumps can cost you the certification.

Short answer

AWS's official CLF-C02 practice is on AWS Skill Builder. The 20-question Official Practice Question Set and the four Domain Review courses are free. The Official Pretest and Official Practice Exam, each 65 questions in 90 minutes, need a Skill Builder subscription, as do the Domain Practice courses. The Question Set, Pretest and Practice Exam each repeat the same questions in a different order, so your first attempt is the most reliable measure. Avoid dumps of supposed real questions: AWS's program agreement bars using unauthorized exam content, and AWS can invalidate results and revoke certifications.

"Practice exam" covers very different things for CLF-C02: AWS's own sets on Skill Builder, third-party question banks, and "dumps" that claim to contain the real questions. Only the first is official, only some of it is free, and the last kind can cost you more than the exam fee. This guide sorts them out and shows how to turn each practice session into targeted study.

AWS's official CLF-C02 practice, free and paid

AWS's CLF-C02 exam prep page on Skill Builder organizes everything into four steps. The practice-related items, as listed on October 27, 2026:

ResourceLengthAccessWhat you get back
Official Practice Question Set20 questions, about 30 minutesFreeDetailed feedback on every answer choice, with recommended resources
Domain 1–4 Review coursesAbout 1 hour eachFreeInstructor videos on each domain's topics (not a question set)
Domain 1–4 Practice courses40 minutes to 1 hour eachSubscriptionExam-style questions and flashcards for one domain, with feedback
Official Pretest65 questions, 90 minutesSubscriptionPercentage correct overall and number correct per domain, with feedback
Official Practice Exam65 questions, 90 minutesSubscriptionPass or fail on the same scaled scoring method as the real exam, with feedback

Skill Builder also lists AWS SimuLearn domain practice and an AWS Escape Room for CLF-C02, both with a subscription; the Escape Room advertises a free demo. The subscription price shown on the Practice Exam page was $29 a month or $449 a year; the AWS Cloud Practitioner exam cost guide puts that next to the exam fee.

One rule applies to the Question Set, the Pretest and the Practice Exam: AWS says you can take each one multiple times, and "each time will include the same questions in a different order." A second attempt measures memory more than knowledge.

An order that gets the most from one-time attempts

AWS's certification page suggests a sequence: review the exam guide and take the Practice Question Set to understand the style, take the Pretest to find areas to refresh, study, then take the Practice Exam to assess readiness. A practical version, which is Passy's suggestion:

  1. Week 1: the free question set, cold. Take it before studying much. Its value is showing you the style and the kinds of distractors, not your score.
  2. Middle of your plan: the Pretest, if you subscribe. Its per-domain counts tell you where to spend the remaining weeks.
  3. Final week: the Practice Exam, timed. Treat it like test day: 90 minutes, no notes, one sitting. AWS describes it as using the real exam's scaled scoring method and reporting pass or fail.
  4. Between them: new questions, not repeats. Because official sets repeat, fill the gaps with fresh questions from other sources, such as the 550 original questions planned for full CLF-C02 prep once it launches.

If you plan to subscribe for only one month, start it so that it covers steps 2 and 3. What a practice score can and can't predict is covered in the CLF-C02 passing score guide: in short, even an official score is a readiness signal, not a forecast.

How to review a missed CLF-C02 practice question

Most of the value of practice comes after the score. A method suited to this exam's style, offered as Passy's editorial advice:

  1. Write down the topic, not the question. For example, "Savings Plans vs Reserved Instances" rather than the question text.
  2. Name the cause. Use one of four labels: didn't know the fact, misread the question, fell for a close distractor, or ran out of time.
  3. Explain every option. For each wrong option, write one sentence on why it is wrong. AWS describes CLF-C02's distractors as "generally plausible responses that match the content area," so this is the skill the exam tests.
  4. Trace it to a task statement. Find the line in the CLF-C02 exam guide that the question tests, and reread that section of your notes.
  5. Retest on a different question. Answering the same item again only proves you remember it.

After two or three sessions, the cause labels show a pattern. Many "didn't know" misses call for content review. Many "misread" misses call for slower reading of the last line of the stem. Many "ran out of time" misses call for timed practice.

A log kept by hand works well. Once full prep opens, the planned Progress view that names the CLF-C02 domain to study next does the domain-level part of that tracking for you.

A worked review, written by Passy

This is an original example, not an AWS exam item.

Question. A company wants to reduce the cost of a steady workload that runs 24 hours a day on Amazon EC2 for the next three years. The instance family may change next year. Which option should it choose?

  • A. On-Demand Instances
  • B. Spot Instances
  • C. Compute Savings Plans
  • D. Standard Reserved Instances

Keyed answer: C. Compute Savings Plans give a discount for a one- or three-year usage commitment and apply regardless of instance family.

Suppose you chose D. The review log entry would read: Topic: Savings Plans vs Reserved Instances. Cause: close distractor; missed "instance family may change." Why the others are wrong: A has no discount for a steady workload, B can be interrupted, D commits to a specific instance configuration. Task statement: 4.1, compute purchasing options. Next step: a new question on Reserved Instance flexibility. AWS's Savings Plans types page states the rule: Compute Savings Plans apply regardless of instance family, size, Region, operating system or tenancy.

Why "dumps" are a bad bet for CLF-C02

Searches for this exam turn up "dumps" that claim to reproduce real exam questions. AWS's rules on them are explicit:

  • Exam questions are confidential. The AWS Certification Program Agreement says all Credential Assessment Materials, which include assessment questions, are AWS Confidential Information.
  • Possessing or using leaked content is a violation. The agreement bars you from possessing, accessing or using "Unauthorized Content Disclosures," which it defines to include exam materials "listed on third-party websites without the express permission of AWS."
  • AWS analyzes results statistically. AWS's Data Forensics Policy describes continuous statistical analysis of exam results to find unusual patterns that may indicate irregular testing behavior. AWS says it may revoke a certification even after it is issued, gives no refunds for forensically invalidated exams, and, after an invalidation, bars online testing until its security team gives written approval.
  • The sanctions are serious. AWS's General Policies list invalidating results, revoking specific or all AWS Certifications and suspending program participation among the possible sanctions.

There is also a practical problem: memorized answers don't explain why the plausible option is wrong, which is what CLF-C02 tests.

Questions to ask about any third-party CLF-C02 practice

Third-party practice can fill the gap that repeating official sets leaves. Before you rely on a source, check, as Passy's suggested criteria:

  • Does it use current names? The exam guide, as read on October 27, 2026, names AWS Business Support+, AWS Enterprise Support and AWS Unified Operations among support options, and services such as Amazon SageMaker AI and Amazon Quick. Questions built on older plan names, such as Developer Support, are out of date.
  • Does it explain the wrong options, not only the right one?
  • Is it original? A source that advertises "actual exam questions" is describing exactly what AWS's agreement prohibits.
  • Does it follow the four domains and their 24/30/34/12 weighting?
  • Does it include multiple-response questions, which make up part of the real exam?

Passy's free CLF-C02 practice questions are 20 original questions across the four domains, with an explanation for every answer. They are not AWS items and don't predict a score.

Your next practice step for CLF-C02

If you haven't started, take AWS's free question set this week and start a review log. The 2-, 4- and 6-week CLF-C02 study plans show where a baseline set and a full-length timed test fit in each schedule.

If your exam is close, plan one full timed run, using AWS's Practice Exam or the planned 65-question CLF-C02 mock under a 90-minute clock once it launches. In the last few days, switch from new material to your review log.
