Failed AWS Cloud Practitioner? The 14-Day Retake Rule and a Two-Week CLF-C02 Comeback Plan

After a failed CLF-C02 attempt, AWS requires a 14-calendar-day wait, charges the full fee again and sets no limit on attempts. Learn what your score report can and can't tell you, what to check before paying again, and a two-week plan aimed at your weakest sections.

Short answer

AWS requires you to wait 14 calendar days after a failed CLF-C02 attempt before you can retake it. There is no limit on attempts, but each one costs the full registration fee, 100 USD plus any taxes. The 50% discount voucher doesn't help unless you already hold another AWS Certification. Use the section classifications on your score report to rank domains for review, knowing they rest on few questions, and spend the two weeks on your weakest domains and on full-length timed practice.

Failing CLF-C02 costs you at least two weeks and another fee, not your chance at the certification: AWS sets no limit on attempts. Because the exam is broad rather than deep, the fix is often targeted review rather than starting over. Here is what AWS's policies say, what your report can tell you, and how to use the two weeks.

AWS's retake rules for CLF-C02

AWS's After Testing page and FAQ set the same rules:

RuleWhat AWS says
Waiting period14 calendar days after a failed exam before you are eligible to retake it
Attempt limitNone
FeeThe full registration fee for each attempt (100 USD for CLF-C02, plus any taxes)
After a passYou can't retake the same exam for two years, unless a new exam version with a new code is released

Planning your retest for day 15 or later keeps you safely outside the waiting period. Book it once you know your two weeks are realistic; AWS lets you reschedule up to 24 hours before the appointment, twice per appointment.

What a CLF-C02 retake costs, and what doesn't count as an attempt

  • The 50% voucher won't cover it unless you already hold another AWS Certification. AWS's benefits page gives that voucher to certified individuals, toward recertification or "any other exam," so a first CLF-C02 pass is what unlocks it.
  • A missed appointment is not a fail. The FAQ says missing an exam forfeits the fee but does not result in a "fail" status, and you can register again 24 hours after the missed time.
  • A problem during the exam is different from a fail. If something went wrong with delivery (a crash, a proctor issue), AWS's General Policies ask you to submit a ticket to AWS Training and Certification Customer Service within 14 calendar days of the exam, describing the issue and its impact. Late tickets may not be reviewed.

The CLF-C02 cost guide covers official ways to lower the second fee, such as GI Bill reimbursement for U.S. veterans. If you plan to buy prep for the retake, compare planned CLF-C02 access lengths with your retest date; checkout isn't open yet.

Reading your CLF-C02 score report after a fail

Your report appears in Exam History in your AWS Certification Account within five business days of the exam, unless the result is under review for security or technical reasons. According to the exam guide, it shows your scaled score (100–1,000; 700 passes) and may include a table classifying your performance in each section.

What you can conclude:

  • Which domains to review first. Rank them by the classification, then by weight: Cloud Technology and Services (34%) and Security and Compliance (30%) carry the most scored questions.
  • That the whole exam is what matters. Scoring is compensatory, so you don't need to "pass" each domain; every extra correct answer counts toward the overall result.

What you can't conclude:

  • How many more correct answers you needed. A scaled score is not a percentage or a count. Claims that a 650 means "three to seven more questions" have no basis in anything AWS publishes.
  • Fine detail inside a domain. AWS warns to "use caution" when you interpret section-level feedback. By Passy's arithmetic from the weights, each domain contributes only about 6 to 17 scored questions.

The CLF-C02 passing score guide explains the scale in full.

Five questions to answer before you pay again

  1. Which two domains does the report rank lowest? Those get most of your time.
  2. Did you study from the current exam guide? Material built on the 2023 guide can miss newly listed services and still use the old AWS Support plan names. Check against the in-scope services list in AWS's CLF-C02 exam guide.
  3. Did you run out of time? At about 83 seconds per question, pacing problems show up as rushed or blank answers at the end. Blank answers count as wrong.
  4. Were you caught by look-alike services or multiple response? If so, practice explaining why each wrong option is wrong.
  5. Did you practice under full exam conditions? If not, plan at least one 65-question, 90-minute run.

Write down topics and service names that felt unfamiliar, not the questions themselves. The AWS Certification Program Agreement makes exam materials, including questions, AWS confidential information, and it forbids disclosing exam content.

A two-week CLF-C02 comeback plan

About 1 to 1.5 hours a day; adjust the domain order to your report:

DaysFocus
1Rest. Then list the topics that felt unfamiliar and read your score report
2–3Reread the exam guide's task statements for your two weakest domains and mark every term you can't explain
4–7Weakest domain first, then the second; for each service, one sentence on what it does and one on what it is confused with
8–9Billing, Pricing, and Support and the in-scope list check, even if Domain 4 was not your weakest; it is short and easy to under-prepare
10A full-length, timed practice test (65 questions, 90 minutes)
11–12Review every miss and every guess; return to the task statements behind them
13Short mixed review of look-alike services; confirm test-day logistics and ID
14Rest
15 or laterRetest

If day 10 shows the same weak spots, move the appointment rather than paying for a hopeful attempt; rescheduling more than 24 hours ahead costs nothing.

The free CLF-C02 retake planner turns your retest date and the domains you found hardest into a week-by-week schedule. Once full prep launches, the planned Redemption challenge that replays the CLF-C02 questions you missed fits days 11 and 12.

Practice that targets your CLF-C02 misses

Rereading notes feels productive but may not fix what the exam exposed. Practice questions with explanations do more, because each miss points to a specific task statement. Passy's free CLF-C02 practice questions are a starting point; they are original questions, not AWS items, and won't predict a score.

Skip "dumps" of supposed real questions. The Program Agreement bars possessing or using unauthorized disclosures of exam content, and AWS lists invalidated results and revoked certifications among the possible sanctions.

When full prep launches, the planned Fix It review keeps every missed CLF-C02 question for another try, which suits a retake built around weak domains.
