How Hard Is the BCBA Exam? What the BACB's Pass Rates Show
The BACB's own data put the 2025 first-time BCBA pass rate at 51%, the first year on the 6th-edition outline, and the retake pass rate at 23%. Here are five years of official pass rates, what the 2025 university report adds, why the exam is hard, and what the numbers can't tell you.
Short answer
By the BACB's own numbers, the BCBA exam is hard. In 2025, the first year on the 6th-edition outline, 51% of first-time candidates passed, and 23% of retake candidates passed. First-time pass rates have ranged from 51% to 60% since 2021. The difficulty comes from breadth (175 scored questions across nine domains), scenario questions that ask for the best or first action, and four hours of sustained focus. Pass rates describe groups of candidates; they can't predict your own result.
BCBA pass rates from 2021 to 2025
The BACB publishes its pass rates every year on its examination information page. As checked on October 27, 2026:
| Year | First-time tested | First-time pass | Retakes tested | Retake pass |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2021 | 12,107 | 60% | 11,301 | 28% |
| 2022 | 7,179 | 55% | 8,575 | 24% |
| 2023 | 8,255 | 56% | 10,450 | 23% |
| 2024 | 9,911 | 54% | 11,780 | 25% |
| 2025 | 9,955 | 51% | 13,196 | 23% |
Three things stand out. The first-time rate has fallen from 60% in 2021 to 51% in 2025, the lowest in this table. The BACB's 2025 university report notes that 2025 was also the first year the exam was based on the 6th-edition outline. And in every year since 2022, the BACB tested more retake candidates than first-time candidates.
What the BACB's 2025 university report adds
The BACB's 2025 pass-rate report for university training programs, published in October 2026, breaks first-time results down by program. It covers 204 programs and 8,558 of the 9,955 first-time candidates: those from ABAI-accredited or Tier 2a or 2b recognized programs, or who completed all Pathway 2 coursework in one program, at programs with more than six first-time candidates.
- Accredited programs did better on average. The mean pass rate was 79.3% across 25 ABAI-accredited programs and 53.2% across the 179 other reported programs.
- A few programs carry most of the volume. The 10 largest programs accounted for 5,446 first-time candidates, 54.7% of the total, and their mean program pass rate was 42.9%. The BACB notes that they had a considerable influence on the overall 51%.
Read these as averages of program rates, not of candidates. The BACB also says pass rates are historical outcomes, not rankings, endorsements or guarantees.
Why the BCBA exam is hard
The pass rates show that it's hard; the format and outline show why.
Breadth. The BCBA Test Content Outline (6th ed.) lists 104 tasks across nine domains, from the philosophy of behaviorism to staff performance management. Every domain is on every exam, so there's nowhere to hide a gap.
Application, not recall. Many tasks ask you to design, evaluate, interpret or apply, not just define. The retired sample questions in the BCBA Handbook are short scenarios: one asks for the most ethical action in a situation outside the behavior analyst's clinical experience, another for what to do first when a client lives in a different state. On items like these, several options sound reasonable, and the skill being tested is picking the best one for that situation.
Four hours of focus. You answer 185 questions in 4 hours, and that time also covers the tutorial and any breaks. That's about 78 seconds per question if you spread the time evenly, which is workable but leaves little room for rereading long scenarios.
An entry-level standard set by experts. The passing score is set by BACB-certified experts against what an entry-level behavior analyst should know, not graded on a curve. The BCBA passing score guide explains how.
Scenario items are where explanations help most. Explanations planned for every answer, right or wrong, are part of full prep at launch.
What BCBA pass rates can and can't tell you
They can tell you the exam deserves structured preparation, and that retakes are common enough that failing once doesn't make you unusual: in 2025, the BACB tested more retake candidates than first-time ones.
They can't tell you your chances. The table counts candidates in a year, across every kind of program and every level of preparation, and the BACB doesn't say whether someone who retook more than once in a year is counted once or for each attempt. The program averages show an association, not a cause: the BACB's report doesn't claim that a given program would change a given person's result. Passy doesn't estimate pass probabilities, and no practice score predicts a BACB result. What you control is the preparation, so see how planned practice for the BCBA exam handles scenario questions alongside the free tools below.
BCBA vs RBT: how the difficulty compares
The same BACB page reports both exams, so the comparison is direct. In 2025, the RBT exam's first-time pass rate was 75% against the BCBA's 51%. The formats differ too: the RBT exam has 85 questions in 90 minutes, the BCBA exam 185 in 4 hours. The BCBA is a graduate-level certification for independent practitioners, and its outline has nine domains to the RBT outline's six, including Experimental Design and Personnel Supervision and Management, which the RBT outline doesn't have.
Making a hard BCBA exam manageable
The BACB recommends preparing with the test content outline, the Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts, and the materials from your training. Around that, a practical approach:
- Find your weak domains early. Try the 20 free BCBA practice questions, which span all nine domains, and note which ones felt uncertain.
- Plan by question count. Give the 25-, 24-, 23- and 22-question domains the most time. The BCBA study plan guide shows the split.
- Practice scenarios, not definitions. For each question, name the principle or Ethics Code standard that decides it, and why each wrong option fails.
- Rehearse the sitting. Do at least one timed run of 185 questions in 4 hours before test day.
To keep practice on your weakest areas once full prep opens, weak-domain drills are planned for launch.
