BCBA Exam Format: 185 Questions, 4 Hours, Nine Domains
The BCBA exam has 185 four-option questions, 175 of them scored, in a 4-hour in-person sitting at Pearson VUE. Here is the domain-by-domain breakdown of the 6th-edition outline, what the 4 hours include, how breaks work, and what you can and can't bring.
Short answer
The BCBA exam has 185 multiple-choice questions: 175 scored and 10 unscored, each with four options and one correct answer. You get 4 hours, and that time also covers the terms and conditions, the tutorial and any breaks you take. The scored questions follow the nine domains of the BCBA Test Content Outline (6th ed.), from 8 questions in Behaviorism and Philosophical Foundations to 25 in Behavior-Change Procedures. You test in person at a Pearson VUE center, in English, and get your pass or fail result before you leave.
The BCBA exam format at a glance
Everything in this table comes from the BCBA Handbook and the BACB's examination information page, checked on October 27, 2026:
| Feature | BCBA exam |
|---|---|
| Questions | 185: 175 scored, 10 unscored |
| Question type | Multiple choice, 4 options, 1 correct answer |
| Weighting | All questions weighted equally |
| Time | 4 hours, including terms and conditions, tutorial and breaks |
| Outline | BCBA Test Content Outline (6th ed.): 104 tasks in 9 domains |
| Delivery | In person, computer-based, at Pearson VUE test centers and some US military bases |
| Language | English only |
| Availability | Continuous, so you choose the date, subject to open seats |
| Result | Pass or fail, shown at the test center |
The exam measures the knowledge of an entry-level behavior analyst, the handbook says. The pass or fail decision rests on your overall performance, not on each domain separately. The BCBA passing score guide explains how that decision is made.
How the 175 scored questions split across the nine domains
The BCBA Test Content Outline (6th ed.) assigns each domain a fixed number of scored questions. The task counts below are Passy's tally of the tasks listed under each domain in the outline:
| Domain | Scored questions | Share | Tasks |
|---|---|---|---|
| A. Behaviorism and Philosophical Foundations | 8 | 5% | 5 |
| B. Concepts and Principles | 24 | 14% | 24 |
| C. Measurement, Data Display, and Interpretation | 21 | 12% | 12 |
| D. Experimental Design | 13 | 7% | 9 |
| E. Ethical and Professional Issues | 22 | 13% | 12 |
| F. Behavior Assessment | 23 | 13% | 8 |
| G. Behavior-Change Procedures | 25 | 14% | 19 |
| H. Selecting and Implementing Interventions | 20 | 11% | 8 |
| I. Personnel Supervision and Management | 19 | 11% | 7 |
| Total | 175 | 100% | 104 |
The BACB rounds the percentages, which is why they look uneven. Two patterns are worth noticing. The four largest domains (B, G, F and E) carry 94 of the 175 scored questions. And question counts don't track task counts: Behavior Assessment has only 8 tasks but 23 questions, an average of almost three questions per task, for tasks such as designing and evaluating functional analyses or preference assessments. The planned question bank tags each question to one of these nine domains, so practice can follow the same split.
What the 4 hours on the BCBA exam include
The clock starts before the first question. The handbook says the 4 hours include reviewing the terms and conditions, the navigation tutorial, a load-time prompt, the exam itself and any review. Refusing the terms and conditions ends the session and forfeits your attempt and fees.
Breaks are allowed but cost time:
- Unscheduled breaks only. Take as many as you need, but the clock keeps running.
- Stay in the building. Leaving the test center ends your exam and forfeits the attempt and fees.
- No phone or notes. During a break you can't use a phone, other devices or study materials, and you can't go to your car. Food, drink and medication are allowed.
Simple arithmetic shows the pace: 240 minutes divided by 185 questions is about 78 seconds per question, before you take out the tutorial or a break. That's a working pace, not a rule; you can spend longer on hard items and less on quick ones. To practice it, plan a rehearsal with the 185-question, four-hour mock exam planned for launch.
The 10 unscored BCBA questions
The outline calls them unscored pilot questions, and they don't count toward your result. The BACB's documents don't say which questions they are, so treat every question as if it counts.
Test center rules: what's provided and what isn't
The BACB delivers the BCBA exam only in person. There is no online, remote-proctored version, and the BACB and Pearson VUE's BACB page both list the delivery as in person. Here is what to expect inside, from the handbook:
- Check-in. Conducted in English, with ID verification, agreement to the rules, a palm vein scan and a digital photo. Arrive about 30 minutes early. Arriving more than 30 minutes late means you can't test.
- ID. One current, original, government-issued ID with your photo and signature, showing your first and last name exactly as in your BACB portal account.
- Provided. A dry-erase board, and earplugs on request. Some centers also have noise-canceling headphones.
- Not allowed. Phones, watches and other electronics, notes, scratch paper, calculators, rulers, food and drinks, bags and visitors. Lockers hold a small number of items.
The handbook also says no translators or interpreters are allowed without an approved accommodation. Pearson VUE offers a demo test of the computer-based format, which is worth trying once before your appointment.
Which outline edition your BCBA exam uses
The BACB's 2027 transition guidance says the exam has been based on the 6th-edition outline since January 1, 2025, and that no changes to the exam or outline are coming. The January 1, 2027 changes affect eligibility, not the test; the BCBA 2027 changes guide covers them.
You may still see "task list" in older study materials. The BACB's February 2026 Newsletter says it no longer uses the term: the exam is defined by the test content outline. Use the 6th-edition outline itself as your checklist, since older task lists were written for earlier versions of the exam.
You won't all see the same questions. The examination information page says the BACB builds many forms from a large question pool, assigns candidates to them at random, and statistically equates them, so it doesn't matter which form you get.
Turning the format into a plan
The format tells you three things to practice: breadth across nine domains, scenario questions with four plausible options, and four hours of sustained focus. Start with the 20 free BCBA practice questions, which cover all nine domains, then use the BCBA study plan guide to split your weeks by the question counts above. If you want recall practice too, flashcards planned for launch are sorted by domain.
Passy is not affiliated with the BACB or Pearson VUE. Its practice questions are original and aren't BACB exam items.
