BCBA Changes in 2027: New Eligibility Rules, Same Exam
On January 1, 2027, the BACB ends Pathways 3 and 4, tightens Pathway 2 degrees and coursework, and revises supervised fieldwork. The BCBA exam and its 6th-edition outline stay the same. Here is what changes, for whom, and what to do before December 31, 2026.
Short answer
From January 1, 2027, the BACB accepts BCBA applications only through Pathway 1 (an accredited or recognized degree program) or Pathway 2 (a master's degree plus behavior-analytic coursework). Pathways 3 and 4 end. Pathway 2 degrees and coursework can't be completed in less than one calendar year, the coursework moves to six new content areas, and fieldwork rules change, including a 160-hour monthly cap and 7.5% supervision for concentrated fieldwork. The BACB has announced no change to the exam itself. To be reviewed under the 2022 rules, your complete application must reach the BACB by December 31, 2026.
What changes for BCBA applicants on January 1, 2027
The BACB's 2027 rules change who can apply and how fieldwork is counted. They don't change the test. Here is the side-by-side, from the BACB's 2027 BCBA Requirements and its transition guidance, as checked on October 27, 2026:
| Area | 2022 rules (complete applications received by Dec. 31, 2026) | 2027 rules (from Jan. 1, 2027) |
|---|---|---|
| Eligibility pathways | Pathways 1, 2, 3 and 4 | Pathways 1 and 2 only |
| Pathway 2 degree | Master's or higher, any field | Same, but not earned in less than one calendar year |
| Pathway 2 coursework | 315 hours in the 2022 content areas | 315 hours in six new content areas, over at least one calendar year |
| Fieldwork hours per month | 20 to 130 | 20 to 160 |
| Concentrated fieldwork supervision | 10% of hours | 7.5% of hours |
| Client observation per month | 1 observation | 60 minutes (Supervised) or 90 minutes (Concentrated), cumulative |
| Supervision CEUs per recertification cycle | 3 | 4 |
| BCBA exam | 6th-edition outline | Same 6th-edition outline |
The BACB defines "one calendar year" as three consecutive primary semesters, four consecutive primary quarters, or 12 consecutive months under another model.
Whichever rules you apply under, test day is the same. The handbook's two-year testing window runs from your approval date, and the 2027 documents don't shorten it. Full prep planned for launch includes a 185-question timed mock exam on the same outline you'll see in 2027.
The December 31, 2026 cutoff for the 2022 rules
The BACB set the cutoff in an August 11, 2026 post: to be reviewed under the 2022 requirements, your complete application, including payment and all required documents, must be received by December 31, 2026. The transition guidance adds the other half of the rule: if you don't apply and meet the current requirements before January 1, 2027, you must meet the new ones.
Read "complete" literally. Your university sends official transcripts straight to the BACB, and you can't upload them yourself, so their timing isn't fully in your hands. The BCBA Handbook says to request transcripts only after you've submitted the application, and that review can take up to 45 days once payment and every document are in. As the BACB words it, the cutoff is about what it has received by December 31, not about when its review finishes.
Pathways 3 (faculty teaching and research) and 4 (postdoctoral experience) have no fallback after the cutoff. The transition guidance says anyone using them must apply, and meet every requirement, before January 1, 2027.
Pathway 2 coursework: checking 2022 courses against the 2027 areas
Pathway 2 keeps its 315-hour total but regroups the content into six areas, each taught in freestanding courses. A freestanding course is one where the required content makes up most of the course.
| 2027 content area | Hours | Course rule |
|---|---|---|
| Basic Principles of Behavior | 45 | 1 freestanding course |
| Theory and Philosophy in Behavior Analysis | 45 | 1 freestanding course |
| Research Methods in Behavior Analysis | 45 | 1 freestanding course |
| Behavior Assessment and Intervention | 90 | 2 freestanding courses |
| Organizational Behavior Management | 45 | 1 freestanding course |
| Ethics in Behavior Analysis | 45 | 1 freestanding course |
If you took some or all of your coursework under the 2022 structure and will apply in 2027, the transition guidance lists the gaps to check:
- Basic Principles must be its own course. If you haven't taken a standalone Basic Principles course, you'll need one.
- Theory and Philosophy must also be its own course.
- Behavior Assessment and Intervention needs 90 hours across two freestanding courses. Courses that mixed these topics with supervision or philosophy may not count.
- Organizational Behavior Management, formerly Personnel Supervision and Management, rises from 30 to 45 hours in one freestanding course.
- Ethics must be one freestanding 45-hour course. It can no longer be split across several courses.
Two more rules carry over or were added. Coursework must still come from an institution with a Pathway 2 Program Contact and fall within 10 years of the year you apply. And the BACB's February 2026 Newsletter explains the new one-year minimum for degrees and coursework: it had seen master's degrees, and full sets of behavior-analytic courses, finished in a few months. The March 2025 Newsletter set the current course wording: the assessment-and-intervention and OBM content must address client-specific cultural, contextual and personal variables.
The BACB recommends reviewing your transcript with your program advisor to confirm the content hours in each course.
Supervised fieldwork in 2027, and how to qualify under both rule sets
The totals don't change: 2,000 hours of Supervised Fieldwork or 1,500 of Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork. Supervised Fieldwork stays at 5% supervision, at least half of supervision must still be individual, and at least 60% of hours must still be unrestricted activities. The 2027 tables also drop the minimum number of supervisor contacts per month; the March 2022 Newsletter that announced the change called that requirement duplicative of the supervision percentage.
The BACB's rule is that fieldwork must meet the requirements in place when you submit your application, whenever the hours were earned. If you're accruing hours and don't know which side of January 1 you'll apply on, the transition guidance recommends meeting both sets at once:
- Sign both forms. Complete the 2022 and 2027 Monthly Fieldwork Verification Forms each month, and both Final forms at the end.
- Track observations two ways. Log the number of client observations and the minutes of each one, because the 2027 rule counts minutes.
- Watch concentrated supervision. Concentrated hours supervised at 7.5% under the 2027 rules don't count as concentrated under the 2022 rules, which need 10%. Hours supervised at 10% satisfy both.
- Watch the monthly cap. A 160-hour month is fine under 2027 rules, but a 2022 application must reduce it to 130.
- Keep the five-year limit. All qualifying hours must still fall within five continuous years.
As of October 26, 2026, the BACB's application processing page still lists the 2022 versions of the fieldwork forms as the ones to submit. The 2027 requirements say applicants after January 1, 2027 will need the 2027 Monthly and Final forms.
What stays the same: the BCBA exam
The transition guidance is direct: the exam has been based on the BCBA Test Content Outline (6th ed.) since January 1, 2025, and there are no upcoming changes to the exam or the outline. The BACB adds that future exam updates will happen independently of changes to certification requirements.
So a 2027 candidate still faces 185 questions in 4 hours across the same nine domains. There is no "2027 task list": the BACB stopped using the term task list and now publishes test content outlines. One caution from the handbook: if a new outline edition ever takes effect during your authorization period, you test under the new edition, with no exceptions. You can see how planned prep for the BCBA exam covers the unchanged 6th-edition domains, and the BCBA exam format guide lays out the structure.
Recertifying in 2027: one CEU change
BCBAs still need 32 CEUs per two-year cycle, including 4 in ethics. The 2027 requirements raise supervision CEUs, for those who supervise, from 3 to 4. The March 2022 Newsletter said the CEU changes apply to BCBAs recertifying on or after January 1, 2027. The ethics CEU definition, expanded in March 2025, now also covers cultural and contextual responsiveness.
Later BCBA dates: 2028, 2029 and 2032
The BACB's Recent & Upcoming Changes page lists three more milestones:
- January 1, 2028. Pathway 2 Program Contacts must be affiliated with an educational institution in a country within the BACB's jurisdiction.
- January 1, 2029. Pathway 1 applicants must hold a master's degree equivalent to a US master's degree, on top of the accreditation or recognition requirement.
- January 1, 2032. Pathway 1 becomes the only BCBA pathway.
If you are choosing a program now and expect to apply in 2032 or later, the BACB's 2025 university pass-rate report advises verifying the program's accreditation status before you enroll. Residents of Australia can no longer apply for BACB certification from January 1, 2027.
Your next step, by situation
- Ready to apply under the 2022 rules. Submit and pay now, then request transcripts. The BCBA application guide walks through the order, and the BCBA exam cost guide lists every fee.
- Still accruing fieldwork. Agree with your supervisor this month to keep both sets of forms and to log observation minutes.
- Pathway 2 student mid-program. Map each course to the six 2027 areas with your advisor before you register for the next term.
- Approved and testing in 2027. Your exam is the one described above. Set a date and build a free BCBA study plan around it, then line up the planned access periods with your 2027 test date; checkout isn't open yet.
