How to Apply for the BCBA Exam: Pathways, Transcripts, and the 45-Day Review
You apply for the BCBA exam in your BACB portal account after you meet every eligibility requirement. Here is the order that avoids delays, which documents each pathway needs, the 90-day and 45-day clocks, and what happens once you're approved.
Short answer
You apply in your BACB portal account once you meet every eligibility requirement for your pathway. Choose the pathway, upload your documents, such as your Final Fieldwork Verification Form, and pay the $245 application fee. Then ask your university to send official transcripts directly to the BACB. Everything must arrive within 90 days of payment, and review can take up to 45 days after it's all in. Once you're approved, you get Pearson VUE scheduling instructions within 24 to 48 hours and have two years to pass the exam.
The BCBA application, step by step
The BACB doesn't let you register for the exam first and finish requirements later. Per the BCBA Handbook, you apply only once you've met every eligibility requirement, and approval is what unlocks scheduling. The order matters, because two clocks start along the way:
- Finish the requirements. Your degree is conferred, your coursework is complete with passing grades, and your fieldwork hours are done and signed off on the Final Fieldwork Verification Form (F-FVF).
- Complete the BCBA Certification Application in your BACB portal account. Choose your pathway carefully: the handbook warns that picking the wrong one may mean submitting and paying for a new application. Upload your documents as PDF or JPEG.
- Pay the $245 application fee by credit card online or by check. Your status moves to awaiting documents, and the first clock starts: the BACB must receive your supporting documents within 90 days of payment, or you start over with a new application and fee.
- Ask your university to send official transcripts. Do this only after you've submitted the application. The institution sends them by email to applications@bacb.com or in a sealed envelope by mail; you can't upload transcripts yourself.
- Wait for the review. The second clock: up to 45 days from the date your payment and all documents have been received. Applications are reviewed in the order received.
- Watch for the approval email. Within 24 to 48 hours of approval, you get instructions for scheduling with Pearson VUE.
If you want your application reviewed under the 2022 requirements, the BACB says your complete application, including payment and all documents, must be received by December 31, 2026. The BCBA 2027 changes guide explains what applies after that.
Which BCBA eligibility pathway you apply under
Every pathway requires a degree, behavior-analytic content, supervised fieldwork, and a passing exam. These are the handbook's four pathways, as checked on October 27, 2026:
| Pathway | Core requirement | From January 1, 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| 1: Accredited or recognized degree | Master's or higher from an APBA-accredited program, or from an ABAI-accredited or recognized program (Tier 1, 2a or 2b) | Continues |
| 2: Behavior-analytic coursework | Master's or higher in any field from a qualifying institution, plus 315 hours of graduate behavior-analytic coursework | Continues, with new course rules |
| 3: Faculty teaching and research | Master's or higher, three years of full-time behavior-analytic faculty work within five years, graduate teaching and a published experimental article | Ends |
| 4: Postdoctoral experience | Doctorate conferred at least 10 years ago and 10 years of postdoctoral practice | Ends |
Most applicants use Pathway 1 or 2, the handbook says. A few details that trip people up:
- Pathway 1 dates. An ABAI-accredited or recognized degree counts if it was earned in 2015 or later while the program held that status. An APBA degree counts if the program was accredited when you earned it.
- Pathway 2 coursework. Courses must be graduate level, earned with a C or better (or a pass), and completed within 10 years of the year you apply. To apply in 2026, only coursework from 2016 or later counts.
- Pathway 2 attestation. Your institution's Pathway 2 Program Contact must submit a BCBA Pathway 2 Coursework Attestation. The BACB's processing page lists the 7/2026 version as current.
- Fieldwork. Pathways 1 to 3 need 2,000 hours of Supervised Fieldwork or 1,500 hours of Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork, completed within five continuous years. Pathway 4 needs 500 supervised hours.
Whichever pathway you qualify through, everyone sits the same exam, and planned practice for the BCBA exam is organized by the nine outline domains that exam is built on.
Fieldwork paperwork: what you submit and what you keep
Only the signed F-FVF goes into the application, and you can submit several if your hours came from more than one supervisor or setting. The monthly forms (M-FVFs), your supervision contract and your documentation system stay with you and your supervisor for at least seven years.
The BACB may audit your fieldwork during application review. If it does, processing pauses until the audit ends, and you typically have 14 days to send what it asks for. As of October 26, 2026, the BACB's application processing page accepts any version of the monthly and final forms "as long as it is for the 2022 Fieldwork Requirements."
Three checks before you pay the BCBA application fee
- Your name. The name in your portal account, on your application and on your documents must match your government ID. A mismatch can lead to a denied application or to being turned away at the test center. The handbook asks you to allow 2 weeks for a name change request.
- Your residence. You must live in the BACB's jurisdiction: the United States, Canada (Ontario residents could no longer apply for BCBA certification from mid-2026, and Quebec testing isn't available), or Australia until January 1, 2027.
- Your history. The application asks whether you have a physical or mental health condition, or a substance use disorder, that could impair safe and competent practice, and about certain investigations or disciplinary actions. A "yes" means an Ethics Self-Reporting Statement and a hold while staff review it. If you're unsure whether past charges or discipline could affect eligibility, the BACB offers a Prior History Review form for people who haven't yet paid for an exam application.
If you need testing accommodations, request them in the application, with the BACB's request form and documentation from a qualified professional. Review typically takes 10 to 14 days, and you shouldn't schedule until the BACB emails you the result.
What each BCBA application status means
The BACB's post on the life cycle of BCBA and BCaBA applications, updated June 29, 2026, explains the statuses in your Applications widget:
| Status | What it means and what to do |
|---|---|
| Submitted, Awaiting Payment and Documents | Neither payment nor transcripts received. Pay and confirm transcripts were sent |
| Submitted, Awaiting Documents | Transcripts not received. Contact your university |
| Under Review | Complete and paid. Watch your email for document requests |
| Awaiting Applicant Action | Something is missing. Check the Action Items widget |
| Approved, Exam Authorization Confirmed | Approved. Schedule your exam |
| Expired | Created more than 90 days ago and no longer active. Start a new application |
The BACB asks applicants not to resubmit documents, because duplicates slow processing. Its processing page shows the current queue: on October 26, 2026, BCBA and BCaBA applications were being reviewed from submissions of October 20, 2026.
A review of up to 45 days is useful study time. You can see what full prep for the BCBA exam will include at launch, or start now with the 20 free BCBA practice questions.
If the BACB doesn't approve your BCBA application
You get feedback by email and as Action Items in your portal. You then have 90 days from submitting the application to meet the requirements; after that, you need a new application and a new $245 fee. If you think the decision was an error, you can file an administrative appeal within 30 days of the determination. Appeals are limited: BACB standards, requirements, deadlines and fees can't be appealed.
At every stage, describe yourself accurately. The BACB's guidance on representing your certification status says applicants should present themselves as working toward national certification, not as "pending" or as a "BCBA candidate."
After approval: scheduling and the two-year window
The approval email comes with your authorization to test. You schedule, reschedule or cancel through your Pearson VUE account or Pearson VUE customer service; the BACB can't do it for you. Pearson VUE's BACB page says to check your authorization details before booking and to contact the BACB right away if anything is wrong. Pearson VUE collects its $125 appointment fee when you book.
From the approval date, you have two years to pass, with up to 8 attempts at least 30 days apart. The exam is offered continuously, so you pick the date, subject to open seats at your test center. Before you book, read the BCBA exam format guide, which covers the four-hour sitting.
Two years is long enough to plan properly. A practical approach is to choose a target date first, then work backward: the free BCBA study planner turns that date into a weekly outline, and you can see which planned access length fits the months before your exam date, though checkout isn't open yet. For fees beyond the application, including retakes and rescheduling, see the BCBA exam cost guide.
Passy is an independent study site, not part of the BACB or Pearson VUE. Confirm each step in the current BCBA Handbook before you pay.
