PMBOK 7 or PMBOK 8 for the CAPM? The Outline PMI Still Uses and What Has Changed Around It
The CAPM still follows PMI's 2023 Exam Update outline, whose reference list names the PMBOK Guide Seventh Edition, while PMI's CAPM prep page now lists the Eighth. Here is what each source says, how to use either edition, and how PMI handled the last CAPM change.
Short answer
Study to the CAPM Examination Content Outline, 2023 Exam Update, which is still the outline on PMI's CAPM page as of October 27, 2026. PMI says each question can be found in at least two references from the outline's list, which names the PMBOK Guide Seventh Edition and Process Groups: A Practice Guide, not the Eighth Edition. PMI's CAPM prep page now lists the PMBOK Guide Eighth Edition (2025) as additional study material. PMI has announced no new CAPM outline and no change date.
The CAPM is still built on PMI's CAPM Examination Content Outline, 2023 Exam Update. That outline, not any edition of the PMBOK Guide, defines what's tested. Its reference list names the PMBOK Guide Seventh Edition and Process Groups: A Practice Guide. PMI's CAPM Exam Prep page, meanwhile, now lists the PMBOK Guide Eighth Edition (2025) as additional study material. As of October 27, 2026, PMI has announced no new CAPM outline and no date for one.
Which CAPM outline applies now
PMI's 2023 Exam Update FAQ set the current exam's launch: available from July 25, 2023, with the previous exam retired after July 24, 2023. On October 27, 2026, the CAPM page still linked the outline titled "2023 Exam Update" and showed the same four domain weights: Fundamentals 36%, Predictive 17%, Agile 20%, Business Analysis 27%. None of the CAPM page, the CAPM Exam Prep page, the outline or PMI's Certification Handbook (revised June 2026) mentioned a coming CAPM change.
One detail shows PMI has revised the outline's reference list without changing its title, domains or weights. The April 2023 FAQ listed Business Analysis for Practitioners from 2015; the current outline PDF lists its Second Edition from 2024.
What changed around the CAPM: PMBOK 8 and the 2026 PMP
Two PMI changes are behind most of the "is the CAPM changing?" questions:
| Change | What PMI says | Does it change the CAPM? |
|---|---|---|
| PMBOK Guide Eighth Edition | Published November 2025. Six core principles, seven performance domains, expanded coverage of AI, PMOs and procurement, and process guidance reintroduced "in an evolved, non-prescriptive way." PMI says it keeps the principles-and-domains foundation of the Seventh Edition | Not by itself. The CAPM outline's reference list still names the Seventh Edition |
| New PMP exam | Live from July 9, 2026, on the PMP Examination Content Outline (2026) | No. It's a different exam. PMI's PMP FAQ confirms an active CAPM still covers the PMP's 35-hour training requirement |
For comparison, PMI's 2021 fact sheet on the Seventh Edition describes 12 project management principles and eight project performance domains. So PMBOK 7 and PMBOK 8 organize similar ideas into different lists.
PMI's 2023 FAQ explains the usual rhythm: PMI researches CAPM content every five years, and these updates have historically aligned with PMBOK Guide update cycles. The FAQ gives no date for the next CAPM update, and Passy doesn't predict one.
The CAPM reference lists side by side
PMI's outline says every question is written and reviewed by subject matter experts and "can be found in a minimum of two references" from its list. PMI's CAPM Exam Prep page has a separate list of additional study material. They differ:
| Reference | In the outline's reference list | On the CAPM Exam Prep page |
|---|---|---|
| PMBOK Guide – Seventh Edition | Yes | No |
| PMBOK Guide – Eighth Edition (2025) | No | Yes |
| Process Groups: A Practice Guide (2022) | Yes | No |
| Agile Practice Guide (2017) | Yes | Yes |
| The PMI Guide to Business Analysis (2017) | Yes | Yes |
| Business Analysis for Practitioners, Second Edition (2024) | Yes | Yes |
| The Project Management Answer Book, Second Edition | Yes | Yes |
| Effective Project Management: Traditional, Agile, Extreme, Hybrid, Eighth Edition | Yes | Yes |
The prep page also links PMI's five sample CAPM questions and the CAPM Exam Official Cert Guide from Pearson IT Certification. The outline is the document that describes how questions are written, so when the two lists disagree, Passy's advice is to follow the outline. The outline also says reading every book on its list "is not a requirement." The references share most of their core vocabulary, and for quick recall of it, 540 flashcards sorted by domain are planned for full CAPM prep.
Using PMBOK 7 or PMBOK 8 for CAPM study
A practical approach, given what PMI has published:
- Study the outline's tasks first. Its 19 tasks ask you to apply concepts, such as life cycles, roles, schedules, iterations and requirements. None asks you to recite a PMBOK edition's list of principles or domains.
- For predictive topics, use process-level material. Critical path, work breakdown structures and cost and schedule variance sit in the Predictive domain. PMI's 2023 FAQ says the exam includes concepts from both the PMBOK Guide Seventh Edition, which PMI describes as a move from processes to principles, and Process Groups: A Practice Guide, the process-focused title.
- If you already own PMBOK 8, use it. PMI says it builds on the Seventh Edition's foundation, and it brings back process guidance. Just don't treat its six principles or seven domains as the CAPM's own vocabulary; the outline doesn't use either list.
- Don't buy every book. Agile and business analysis together are 47% of the exam, so the Agile Practice Guide and a business analysis reference often do more for your score than a second PMBOK edition.
If you want questions written to the current outline rather than to a book, full CAPM prep is planned on the 2023 Exam Update outline, across all four domains. The CAPM business analysis guide covers the domain where the business analysis references matter most.
What a CAPM change would look like
The 2023 update gives a precedent for how PMI announced a CAPM change:
- A published FAQ. The version checked for this guide is marked "Updated: April 2023," about three months before launch.
- A new outline describing the domains and tasks, available before launch.
- A fixed switch date. The new exam started July 25, 2023. Candidates who wanted the old exam had to apply, schedule and sit it by July 24, 2023.
- Stated non-changes. The FAQ said eligibility, the scoring method, the price and the 15-PDU maintenance requirement would stay the same.
In 2023, the switch followed your exam date, not your application date. If PMI announces a new CAPM outline, check the switch date PMI gives against your own appointment.
Planning a CAPM attempt in 2027
If you plan to test in 2027, the 2023 Exam Update outline is the one in force as of October 27, 2026, and nothing PMI has published says otherwise. Your one-year eligibility period starts when PMI approves your application, so an application in late 2026 can run well into 2027. Before you book, check the outline title on PMI's CAPM page. Passy's CAPM study time guide builds a plan on the current domain weights, and the free CAPM study planner does the same for your own exam date.
