NHA CCMA for the High School Class of 2027: Provisional Certification, the 12- or 18-Month Clock, and Conversion
High school students graduating in 2027 can take the NHA CCMA before graduation for a provisional certification. Here is which provisional period applies to you, why some NHA documents still say 12 months, and how to convert to a full two-year CCMA.
Short answer
If you graduate from high school or a GED program in 2027, you can take the NHA CCMA before graduating and receive a provisional certification. For exams passed from October 1, 2026, NHA allows testing up to 18 months before graduation, and the provisional certification lasts 18 months from your exam date. If you passed before October 1, 2026, your original 12-month period still applies. Either way, send NHA proof of graduation before the provisional certification expires to convert it to a two-year CCMA, or you'll have to take the exam again.
High school health science programs often end with the CCMA exam, and NHA has a route built for them: you take the exam before you graduate, receive a provisional certification with a "P" in the certification number, and convert it to a standard two-year CCMA once you have your diploma or GED. For the class of 2027, the route changed partway through: NHA lengthened the provisional period on October 1, 2026, and not every NHA document has caught up.
Which provisional clock applies to the class of 2027
NHA's announcement, posted in August 2026 and listed under October 2026 on its update page, extended the CCMA's provisional certification from 12 to 18 months beginning October 1, 2026. Its FAQ on the change settles who gets which period:
| You passed the CCMA | Provisional period | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Before October 1, 2026 | The rules in place on your exam date: 12 months from the exam date | NHA FAQ: candidates who pass before October 1, 2026 "will remain subject to the provisional certification rules that were in place on their exam date" |
| On or after October 1, 2026 | 18 months from the exam date | NHA FAQ: the 18-month period "applies prospectively beginning October 1, 2026" |
The FAQ is explicit that no one already holding a provisional certification gets extra time: the change "will not add time to an existing candidate's provisional period." In every case, the provisional period starts on the date you pass.
Some dates for a student graduating on June 10, 2027 (Passy's arithmetic, using NHA's rules):
| Exam passed | Period | Provisional expires | Time after graduation to convert |
|---|---|---|---|
| September 15, 2026 | 12 months | September 15, 2027 | About 3 months |
| November 10, 2026 | 18 months | May 10, 2028 | About 11 months |
| March 3, 2027 | 18 months | September 3, 2028 | About 15 months |
If you're in the first row, your window is the tight one: plan to send proof of graduation in the first weeks after you graduate. As of October 28, 2026, NHA's Product & Cert Portal Updates page lists no further provisional change, so these rules carry through 2027 unless NHA announces another one.
Why some NHA documents still say 12 months
NHA's own documents disagree, which is why you should check your exact date in your account. As read on October 28, 2026:
- 18 months: the announcement and FAQ above; the Candidate Handbook (updated 10/05/2026) on pages 10, 11 and 38 and in its registration attestations; NHA's high school FAQ; and NHA's eligibility article
- 12 months or one year: the same handbook on page 35 ("Provisional Certifications expire twelve (12) months after the examination date") and page 37 ("valid for only one (1) year"); the Help Center's conversion how-to, which says an affidavit isn't accepted after "your 1-year deadline"; the conversion article for CTE programs, which calls the provisional certification "valid for 12 months"; and NHA's CCMA page as captured on September 30, 2026, before the change took effect
The dated announcement and FAQ are the most specific sources, and the handbook's provisional and conversion sections agree with them. The 12-month passages read like text that hasn't been updated. Still, the safest plan doesn't depend on which one is right: open My Achievements in your NHA account, read the expiration date shown there, and aim to convert within 12 months of your exam date whenever your graduation allows it.
When the class of 2027 can take the CCMA
Under the rule for exams passed from October 1, 2026, you must take and pass the CCMA no more than 18 months before you graduate. NHA's FAQ adds that at registration you're asked whether you've finished high school; if not, you confirm that you expect to graduate within the provisional period, and if you don't expect to, you aren't eligible yet.
Graduating is only one of the requirements. The handbook grants a provisional certification "as long as all certification eligibility requirements are met," so you still need a qualifying pathway, such as your school's medical assistant training program. Three practical rules from NHA:
- You register yourself. The handbook says parents, teachers and other school officials may not register on your behalf
- Use a personal email address. NHA advises one that will still work after you leave school
- School exam dates close early. NHA requires applications at least 8 days before a school's exam date and, since January 1, 2026, can't accommodate later requests
The exam itself is the same CCMA every candidate takes, with 150 scored questions across seven domains, and the update page lists no new CCMA exam as of October 28, 2026. Planned CCMA practice follows those same seven domains.
What a provisional CCMA does and doesn't give you
The handbook calls a provisional certification "a placeholder," meant to let you test close to the end of your training before you hold a diploma. Three limits come with it:
- It can't be renewed or reinstated. It must be converted, or it lapses and you retake the exam
- It carries a "P." NHA's high school FAQ says provisionally certified candidates have a "P" associated with their certification number
- NHA One isn't included. NHA's NHA One article excludes provisional certification holders from automatic enrollment
Whether a provisional CCMA is enough for a particular job is the employer's decision, and state rules may add their own conditions, as the Washington section below shows.
Converting to a two-year CCMA after you graduate
Once you graduate, you apply to convert. NHA's conversion how-to lists the steps:
- Log in to your NHA account, open My Achievements and write down your certification number
- Get one graduation document: a high school transcript, an unofficial transcript that shows the graduation date, a copy of your diploma, GED scores or certificate, or an affidavit from your school confirming graduation. College transcripts aren't accepted
- Email it to info@nhanow.com or fax it to 913-661-6291, with the name on your NHA account and your certification number
- Look for the two-year certification in your account, which NHA says shows within 2 to 3 business days
The handbook also says you must be able to provide written proof of your training or work experience if NHA asks. Your school may handle conversion for you: NHA gives CTE programs a self-service tool to move students from provisional to full certification. Ask your teacher whether your program uses it, and don't assume it does.
After conversion, NHA says the two-year expiration date is based on your original exam date. So a CCMA passed on November 10, 2026 would come up for renewal around November 2028 (Passy's reading of that rule; your account shows the exact date), with 10 continuing education credits due by then. The 2027 renewal guide explains the renewal cycle.
If you're in Washington
Washington adds a state step for anyone who will work as a medical assistant-certified. Its rule, WAC 246-827-0200, accepts, with the secretary's approval, training from a career and technical education program approved by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction that includes at least 720 clock hours and a clinical externship of at least 160 hours. The exam must have been passed within the five years before your initial application, and the Department of Health's credentialing requirements ask applicants to attest to completing high school or its equivalent, so the state application comes after graduation. The CCMA state requirements guide covers Washington's credentials in full.
A 2026–2027 plan for CCMA students
A schedule for a spring 2027 graduate (Passy's suggestion):
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Fall 2026 | Confirm with your teacher which date your school offers the CCMA, and create your own NHA account with a personal email |
| At least 8 days before the school's exam date | Complete your exam application through the school |
| 8 to 10 weeks before the exam | Study by domain from NHA's free test plan; the CCMA study plan guide has an 8-week version |
| Exam day | Pass, and note your exam date: your provisional clock starts there |
| Graduation | Request a transcript or diploma copy right away |
| First weeks after graduating | Send proof of graduation and check that the two-year CCMA appears in your account |
Eight weeks of study fits inside 90 days, and the 90-day CCMA access period planned for launch leaves room for a week-by-week plan.
