CCMA Practice Tests: NHA's Official Practice, Focused Review, and How to Use Your Scores
NHA sells the only official CCMA practice: three online practice tests with two attempts each, plus Focused Review after every attempt. Here is what each option includes, how to spread six attempts over your study weeks, how to judge third-party tests, and what practice scores can't tell you.
Short answer
NHA's official CCMA practice is a set of three online practice tests, each allowing up to two attempts, sold alone or in a package with the online study guide; NHA calls the study guide plus practice test its best practice. After each attempt, Focused Review sends you to the content behind the questions you missed. NHA's handbook warns that practice questions aren't exam questions and that a high practice score doesn't guarantee a pass. Use the first attempt as a baseline about 45 days out and the last as a timed rehearsal a week before.
Only NHA publishes official CCMA practice. Everything else, including Passy's practice, is someone's attempt to imitate the exam from the public test plan. That doesn't make other practice useless, but it changes what a practice score means. Here is what NHA offers, how to use it, and how to read any practice result, as checked on October 28, 2026.
NHA's official CCMA practice options
NHA's CCMA page lists three paid products and one free document:
| Product | What NHA says it includes |
|---|---|
| CCMA Online Study Guide | Interactive games, quizzes, flashcards and professionalism tips |
| CCMA Practice Tests | "a set of three different online practice tests," each allowing "up to 2 attempts" |
| CCMA Preparation Package | The study materials and the practice tests together, which NHA labels its best value |
| CCMA Test Plan | Free; NHA calls it a study aid that "maps out key concepts you will see on the CCMA exam" |
Individuals buy them in NHA's online store, under Shop, by choosing the profession and a study package; NHA's purchasing article says its best practice is the online study guide plus the online practice test, and that a printed study guide may add a shipping fee. If you're in a program, ask your school first: schools can enroll students in an NHA course that includes the study guide and practice tests, and an instructor may lock practice tests until a set date, per NHA's course access article. The handbook also says buying them "is not required to become eligible to sit for an NHA exam and does not guarantee a passing score."
Two recent changes affect how NHA practice feels. NHA's Product & Cert Portal Updates say embedded calculators were being added to applicable NHA practice tests in June 2026 to match the exam's built-in calculator, and that Claire AI, an assistant that can summarize, explain, make flashcards and generate a question from NHA's own content, became available in NHA products for learners on June 24, 2026.
Before you open anything: NHA's refund rule
NHA's refund policy allows returns only within 28 days of purchase and only for unused products, and "if you have accessed any online content the Product is deemed Used." Package items can't be refunded one at a time. So decide which product you need before you click in, not after.
Focused Review: NHA's built-in follow-up
NHA describes Focused Review as a complimentary feature of its practice assessments that gives "immediate remediation for questions answered incorrectly." NHA's how-to article explains how it works:
- It appears with your score report as soon as you finish a practice test, and you can reopen it later from My Courses in your NHA account
- Its table of contents takes you to the competencies behind the questions you missed on that attempt
- Choose Topics filters it to subtopics where your percent correct is at or below a level you set
- You can export it to PDF, all of it or chosen topics, to keep or share with your school
- NHA's advice is to "spend time in your Focused Review prior to taking your next practice test"
The filter is the useful part. Setting it to, say, 70% gives you a short list of what to restudy instead of a long reread.
Spreading six CCMA practice attempts across your study weeks
Three tests with two attempts each give you six attempts. NHA's study materials article says that if your options include a Baseline or Final practice test, use the baseline "prior to study to set your study outline" and the final "as the last practice test prior to your NHA exam," with a score review and Focused Review between attempts. NHA's Learner Readiness Checklist (revised 02/26) puts the first practice assessment about 45 days out, practice attempts with Focused Review in between from about 30 days out, and the final practice assessment "in a realistic exam scenario" one week before.
A schedule that follows those dates, in Passy's words:
| When | Attempt | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| About 45 days out | Test 1, attempt 1 | Baseline: find your weakest domains before you plan |
| About 30 days out | Test 2, attempt 1 | First check after targeted study |
| About 3 weeks out | Test 3, attempt 1 | A form you haven't seen, for an honest reading |
| About 2 weeks out | Test 1 or 2, attempt 2 | Recheck the domains Focused Review flagged |
| About 1 week out | Remaining attempt, timed | NHA's final practice "in a realistic exam scenario" |
| Spare | One attempt | Keep for a retake if you need one; check how long your access lasts, which the articles cited here don't say |
NHA doesn't say whether a second attempt on the same test repeats the same questions. If it does, part of a higher second score is memory, so treat a test you haven't seen as the more honest measure.
What a CCMA practice score can and can't tell you
NHA's Candidate Handbook says "achieving a high score on the practice test does not guarantee you will pass the certification exam," that "the items from the practice exam are not the same questions that are on the certification exam," and that, like the exam, practice questions are "linked to the major content areas."
That gives three practical rules:
- Don't convert a percentage into a CCMA score. The exam reports a scaled score from 200 to 500 with 390 to pass, weighted by question difficulty, and no practice percentage maps onto it. The CCMA passing score guide explains why
- Read results by domain, not just overall. A good total can hide a weak domain, and the real score report rates each domain Above, Near or Below the standard
- Watch the trend and the timing. Rising domain scores on forms you haven't seen, at about one minute per question, are better evidence than a single high score
Once NHA's attempts are used, you still need fresh questions to keep that evidence coming, and a bank of 675 CCMA questions is planned for launch.
Checking a third-party CCMA practice test
Practice from other publishers isn't NHA's, so check it against the official documents before you trust its score:
- Does it follow the current plan? NHA's test plan, used since January 10, 2024, has seven domains with 150 scored questions: Clinical Patient Care 84, Foundational Knowledge 15, three domains of 12, Anatomy and Physiology 8, and Medical Law and Ethics 7. NHA's older one-page summary, based on a 2016 job analysis, shows Anatomy and Physiology at 12 and Administrative Assisting at 19 or 20; a practice test built on those numbers is out of date
- Is it full length? The exam is 180 questions in 3 hours, including 30 unscored pretest items
- Does it claim "real" or "recalled" questions? At registration, every candidate attests that exam questions are the copyrighted property of Assessment Technologies Institute and won't be memorized or shared, and the handbook treats any effort to retain exam content as theft. A seller claiming actual exam questions is either wrong or selling something candidates promised not to share
- Do the explanations cite sources? A clinical answer should trace to something you can check, such as CDC, OSHA or CLSI
Passy's own 20 free CCMA practice questions are original, explain every answer, and say plainly that a score on 20 items doesn't predict a pass.
Rehearsing the full CCMA sitting
The final practice should feel like the exam: one sitting, the full time, no phone, and only an on-screen calculator. The handbook's rules make the exam a single continuous session with no stopping and coming back, and a proctor may allow a break in person only by exception, with the clock running; remote exams allow none. NHA's CCMA page doesn't say how many questions each practice test has, so if you want to rehearse the full 180 questions in three hours, the planned CCMA mock exam is one timed 3-hour sitting.
After the rehearsal, review the misses by type: a fact you didn't know, a step out of order, a misread scenario, or a calculation set up wrong. The CCMA test day guide covers what to bring and what to expect on the day itself.
Your next step with CCMA practice
If you haven't taken any practice yet, take a baseline now: at the exam's pace of a minute a question, the 20 free CCMA practice questions take about 20 minutes. Then build your weeks around the attempts above in the free CCMA study planner, and when you know your weakest domains, domain-by-domain accuracy in planned CCMA prep names the one to work on next.
