EPA 608 Certification Cost: Who Sets the Fee and What It Covers
EPA does not charge for Section 608 certification or issue cards. Each EPA-approved certifying program sets its own fee. Here is one dated example, the extras worth asking about, and how to pick a program from EPA's list.
Short answer
There is no single EPA 608 fee. EPA does not give the test or issue cards; EPA-approved certifying programs do, and Appendix D to 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F lets them charge reasonable fees. As one example, ESCO Institute listed its online-proctored 2026 exam at $85 on October 25, 2026, covering the Core, Type I, Type II and Type III sections, with extra fees to retest a failed section. Other programs, schools and supply houses set their own prices.
Why EPA 608 has no national price
EPA 608 certification costs whatever the certifying program you choose charges. EPA itself does not sell the test: its Section 608 pages say "EPA does not issue certification cards" and that tests "must be administered by an EPA-approved certifying organization." The only federal word on price is in Appendix D to 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F: certifying programs "may charge individuals reasonable fees for the administration of the tests." EPA does not publish a fee schedule, and Appendix D keeps any training or review materials a program offers "completely separate from the administration of the certification test."
So a price you see online belongs to one program, one delivery format and one date. Compare what each price includes before comparing the numbers.
One dated example: ESCO's online-proctored EPA 608 exam
ESCO Institute is on EPA's list of approved programs and posts its remote-exam terms publicly. As checked on October 25, 2026:
| Item | What ESCO's 2026 exam page says |
|---|---|
| Price | $85 |
| Sections included | Core, Type I, Type II and Type III (25 questions each) |
| Delivery | Online, proctored live through ProctorU, available 24 hours a day |
| What you need | A computer with webcam and microphone, a reliable connection, a government-issued photo ID, a quiet private room, and the Guardian browser or ProctorU extension (tablets, iPads and Chromebooks are not supported) |
| Scheduling | At least 72 hours ahead to avoid rush fees |
| Retests | A failed section is retaken alone, passed sections "stay passed," and "additional testing fees apply" |
| Results and card | Same-day results, card mailed the next business day |
Two more notes come with that price. ESCO also still sells its 2018 exam for candidates who studied with its 9th edition manual, and its EPA 608 page says the 2018 exam "remains available until January 1, 2027." For testing in person, ESCO points candidates to its designated proctors by phone, and its exam page does not list an in-person price.
This is one program's offer, not a national rate. Before you settle on a program, it is worth deciding how you will study: you can see Passy's planned EPA 608 prep options and prices, which are separate from any exam fee and marked "At launch" with checkout not yet open.
Costs that sit outside the EPA 608 exam fee
- Retests. EPA sets no waiting period or attempt limit, and programs set their own retest fees. Ask whether you pay per failed section or for the whole test again
- Rush or late scheduling. ESCO's remote page warns of rush fees inside 72 hours. Other proctoring services have their own rules
- In-person sessions. Ask whether the school or business hosting the test adds its own session or proctor fee to the program's price
- Study materials. A program's manual or course can be sold separately from the exam, as ESCO's manual is
- Replacement cards. Ask whether your program charges to replace a lost card
Questions to ask an EPA 608 program before you pay
- Does the fee cover Core plus one type, or Core plus all three types?
- Is the test remote or in person, and what ID and equipment do I need? Appendix D requires proctors to check photo identification.
- Is this the 2018 exam or the new 2026 exam, and does the study material match it? ESCO says the old exam can only be graded through January 1, 2027.
- What does it cost to retest one section, and how soon can I book it?
- Is the test offered in Spanish or another language, or orally? Programs are encouraged to offer other languages or a translator, and a test may be given orally if you ask the program in writing at least 30 days before the test date (40 CFR 82.161(b)(3)).
- When will I get my results and my card? Appendix D caps both at 30 days.
- Will my name be published? Programs other than federally run ones must post an online list of technicians certified since January 1, 2017, with name, city, certification type and date, and must let you opt out (40 CFR 82.161(b)(6)).
If a program is vague on the first question, compare it with one that lists sections, like the table above. The EPA 608 certification types guide helps you decide whether one type is enough before you pay for it. Whatever you book, the content is the same federal material, which is what EPA 608 prep built on EPA's test topics and 40 CFR Part 82 is organized around.
Finding a program on EPA's list
EPA's list of certification programs was last updated October 20, 2026. The notes next to each program answer most logistics questions:
- "Remote testing available" or "Online testing only" marks programs you can take from home
- "Type I mail-in tests available" marks the few programs that offer the mail-in Type I format. EPA notes that most Type I programs test on-site, and a mail-in Type I needs 84% and cannot count toward Universal
- "Spanish available" marks programs that test in Spanish
- An asterisk marks programs intended only for that company's or agency's own employees, so skip those unless you work there
- Addresses are headquarters. EPA says many programs test nationwide and each can tell you its locations
Certifications from programs that no longer offer testing stay valid, according to EPA's list page. That matters if you already hold an older card.
Once you have booked, the free EPA 608 study plan works back from your test date, and the passing score guide shows how many answers each section needs.
Replacing a lost EPA 608 card
EPA cannot replace a card. Its lost-card steps, updated March 19, 2026, go in order:
- If the program that certified you still operates, ask it for a replacement. Programs must keep records of the cards they issue.
- If it does not, but you or an employer have proof that you passed or a copy of the card, send that proof to ESCO Institute or Ferris State University, which EPA lists as willing to issue a new card.
- If your program closed, check EPA's list of closed programs and contact EPA.
- If none of these work, you need to retake the test.
Keep a copy of the card at your place of business, as 40 CFR 82.161(a)(4) requires. Certification does not expire, so there is nothing to renew.
What EPA 608 prep costs compared with the exam
At ESCO, retesting a failed section costs extra on top of the exam fee. What you study beforehand is a separate choice: a program's manual, a course, or free practice. Passy's EPA 608 practice questions are free with no account, five per test. Passy's full prep is listed as one-time access of 30, 90 or 180 days at launch, and you can review the 30-, 90- and 180-day EPA 608 access lengths now, although no payment can be taken until checkout opens.
