EPA 608 Exam in 2027: New Question Bank, Same Core and Type Structure
Candidates who test in 2027 will get exams drawn from EPA's revised Section 608 question bank, because the old exam cannot be graded after January 1, 2027, according to ESCO Institute. The federal structure and pass marks do not change. Here is what is confirmed, what is not, and how to study for it.
Short answer
If you take the EPA 608 in 2027, your test should come from EPA's revised question bank. ESCO Institute, an EPA-approved certifying program, says EPA told programs on August 18, 2026 that they could start using the new bank immediately and that the old exam may not be graded after January 1, 2027; ESCO allows only the new exam from January 2, 2027. The federal rules in 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F, Appendix D stay the same: 25 Core questions plus 25 per type, 100 for Universal, and 70% to pass (84% for mail-in Type I). Technicians already certified do not retest.
The EPA 608 exam a 2027 candidate will take
Every EPA 608 test given in 2027 should come from EPA's revised question bank. ESCO Institute, one of the certifying programs on EPA's approved list, published its implementation guidance on October 8, 2026: it says EPA's communication of August 18, 2026 let programs start using the new bank immediately and stated that the old exam "may no longer be graded after January 1, 2027." For ESCO's proctors, that means either exam through December 31, 2026, and "Beginning January 2, 2027: Only the new exam may be administered and graded."
What does not change is the frame the regulation sets: the same four certification types, the same 25-question Core and type sections, the same pass marks. If you were certified before 2027, you keep your certification. If you are preparing now, you can see how EPA 608 prep covers all four tests inside that unchanged frame.
Announcement, start and retirement dates for the new EPA 608 bank
Announcements, start dates and retirement dates are easy to blur, so here they are separately, with who says so:
| Date | What happened | Who says so |
|---|---|---|
| December 5, 2025 | Last update of EPA's public Test Topics page (as of October 25, 2026) | EPA |
| August 2026 | ESCO released its updated Section 608 test bank and a 10th edition study manual correlated to it | ESCO |
| August 18, 2026 | EPA communication to certifying programs: the new bank may be used immediately, and the old exam may not be graded after January 1, 2027 | ESCO, describing EPA's communication |
| Through December 31, 2026 | ESCO proctors may give either the old or the new exam | ESCO |
| January 1, 2027 | Last date the old exam can be graded | ESCO |
| January 2, 2027 | Only the new exam may be given and graded, and old testing materials must be destroyed | ESCO |
As checked on October 25, 2026, EPA had not posted the change on its public Section 608 pages. Its certification requirements page (updated July 15, 2026) and its list of approved programs (updated October 20, 2026) do not mention a new question bank, and the Test Topics page still carries its December 5, 2025 date. The dates above therefore rest on ESCO's published account of EPA's instructions, not on an EPA web page. If you test with another program, ask it which bank it uses before you book. The EPA 608 cost guide lists that question among the others worth asking.
What stays the same on the 2027 EPA 608 exam
The structure comes from 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F, and the eCFR text current as of October 22, 2026 shows no change:
- Certification types: Type I (small appliances), Type II (medium-, high- and very high-pressure), Type III (low-pressure) and Universal (40 CFR 82.161(a))
- Questions: 25 from the Core group plus 25 from each type's group, and 100 for Universal (Appendix D)
- Pass marks: 70% on closed-book tests, 84% on mail-in Type I (Appendix D)
- Format: Type II, Type III and Universal closed-book and proctored, with photo ID. A mail-in Type I or an open-book Core cannot count toward Universal
- Results and card: within 30 days of the test (Appendix D)
- Who writes the questions: EPA develops the bank and releases it only to approved programs (40 CFR 82.161(c)), so its exact wording is not public
ESCO's page for its 2026 exam matches that frame: four sections of 25 multiple-choice questions, 70% (18 of 25) on each, and a passing Core required for any type. ESCO's exam page also says its 2026 pressure-temperature chart is allowed during the exam. There is no new Type IV in the regulation for A2L or other newer refrigerants, and ESCO's 2026 exam still has the same four sections. Any A2L course you take is separate from federal Section 608 certification.
Because the structure holds, EPA 608 prep organized around Core and Types I, II and III still lines up with the 2027 test.
What changes inside the new EPA 608 question bank
ESCO's transition FAQ (September 17, 2026) says EPA calls this a "quality of life" revision reflecting updates to refrigerants, technologies and industry best practices, with outdated practices removed. Asked what is changing in the Section 608 regulations, ESCO answers "Nothing." Its October guidance adds that the new bank "reflects current refrigerant technologies."
That is the extent of what is confirmed in writing. EPA has not published a question-by-question list of changes, and because the bank goes only to approved programs, no one outside them can show you its contents. Treat any study product that claims to reproduce the new questions with suspicion.
Already certified, or adding a type in 2027
- Current cards stay valid. EPA's requirements page says Section 608 credentials do not expire, and ESCO's FAQ says technicians who are already certified do not need to retest
- Adding a type later. Any section you take from January 2, 2027 comes from the new bank. A Type II technician adding Type III in 2027 will study for, and sit, the new version
- Retesting soon. ESCO advises proctors with retests after January 1 to use the new exam now, so candidates do not have to study both versions. If you test in November or December 2026 and might need a retest, ask for the new exam
How to prepare for the EPA 608 exam in 2027
- Confirm the version. Through December 31, 2026, ask your program whether it gives the old or the new exam. From January 2, 2027, it should be the new one.
- Match your materials. ESCO pairs its 2026 exam with its 10th edition manual and 2026 pressure-temperature chart, and its 2018 exam with the 9th edition and 2018 chart. ESCO's own warning is to "be sure the materials you study match the exam you plan to take."
- Study the rules, which did not change. Evacuation levels, small-appliance recovery, leak repair, the sales restriction and safety still come from 40 CFR Part 82 and EPA's test topics. The EPA 608 numbers guide lists them with their conditions.
- Expect current equipment in the questions. With outdated practices removed, expect scenarios that describe today's refrigerants and tools.
- Prepare section by section. Core gates every type at ESCO, so give it its own block. The EPA 608 passing score guide turns 70% into counts.
The new bank is about the test. The handling rules you follow on the job in 2027, including the HFC rules in 40 CFR Part 84, are a separate subject, covered in EPA refrigerant rules for 2027.
Planning EPA 608 study time for a 2027 test date
The free EPA 608 study plan takes your test date and daily study time, lets you check Core and the types you are taking, and splits the days across them. The EPA 608 practice questions are original Passy items written from EPA's test topics and 40 CFR Part 82, not from either EPA question bank, so they do not predict a result on the new exam. They show where your reasoning breaks.
Full Passy prep for the EPA 608 is marked "At launch" with no date set and no checkout open, as of October 25, 2026. The full EPA 608 prep planned for launch lists 775 questions across the four tests and 420 flashcards.
