Is Physics on the HESI A2 in 2027? Only If Your Program Assigns It

Elsevier's current HESI A2 review book dropped its physics chapter, and Elsevier's A2 paper describes seven academic exams without physics. See why some programs still mention physics, how to tell whether yours requires it, and what to study if it does.

Short answer

Physics is not one of the seven academic exams Elsevier describes for the HESI A2, and Elsevier's current review book, the sixth edition published in 2024, has no physics chapter, although the 2020 fifth edition did. Physics still appears as an optional part in some program setups, which is why you'll see it mentioned: Middle Tennessee State University, for example, tells Fall 2027 applicants to take the complete exam except Physics. So for 2027, check your program's list of required exams. If physics isn't on it, don't study it; if it is, plan for basic mechanics, energy, and related concepts.

What Elsevier's own materials say

Two current Elsevier sources point the same way:

SourceWhat it shows
Elsevier's 2022 paper on the A2Seven academic exams in three areas: Reading Comprehension, Grammar, and Vocabulary; Basic Math Skills; Anatomy and Physiology, Biology, and Chemistry. No physics exam is listed
Admission Assessment Exam Review, 6th edition (March 2024)Chapters for Mathematics, Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary, Grammar, Biology, Chemistry, and Anatomy and Physiology. No physics chapter
Admission Assessment Exam Review, 5th edition (2020)The same chapters plus an eighth: Physics

So the physics material you see in older books, flashcards, and forum posts comes from the earlier edition. If you bought a used review book, check its edition before you spend time on its physics chapter.

Why physics still comes up

Physics hasn't vanished from every setup. Some program pages still refer to it as a part of the exam they leave out or include. Middle Tennessee State University's Fall 2027 instructions, for example, say to take the complete HESI exam except Physics, which tells you it exists as an option the school chooses to skip. Indian River State College's 2027 section list, by contrast, doesn't include physics at all.

That's the key point for 2027: programs choose which HESI A2 exams you sit. Whether physics is on your test depends on your program's configuration, not on a national rule. The HESI A2 overview explains how programs assign exams.

How to check whether your program requires physics

  1. Read the program's HESI page for the list of required exams. Look for the word Physics, or for "complete exam" language that names exceptions.
  2. Check the admissions criteria for any physics score requirement. If no physics minimum is listed and the exam isn't named, it almost certainly isn't counted.
  3. Ask the testing center what appears in your registration or exam group in Evolve if the program page is unclear.
  4. Keep the answer in writing, especially if you're applying to several programs with different setups. The 2027 requirements guide shows how much program rules vary.

If physics is on your list

Elsevier doesn't publish a current physics outline for the A2, so build your review from the basics a health-sciences physics section would reasonably test, and check them against your program's materials:

  • motion: speed, velocity, and acceleration
  • Newton's laws and forces, including friction and gravity
  • work, energy, and power
  • simple machines and mechanical advantage
  • heat and temperature, and basic waves and sound
  • basic electricity and magnetism

Keep the math simple and the units consistent; the challenge is usually setting up the problem, not complex algebra. Passy's HESI A2 prep includes a physics section for programs that still assign it, so you can practice HESI A2 physics questions with explanations if yours does.

If physics isn't on your list

Skip it. Time spent on an unassigned exam is time taken from one that counts, such as math and anatomy and physiology for Middle Tennessee State's Fall 2027 applicants. The study guide shows how to prioritize the exams your programs actually use.
