HiSET in Spanish: Availability, Time Limits and Free Practice
Whether you can take the HiSET in Spanish (HiSET en español), how to confirm it for your state, what changes on the Reading clock, which official Spanish materials exist and what PSI's results show.
Short answer
Yes, if your state offers it. PSI, which runs the HiSET, lists English or Spanish among the options that vary by state, and its 2024/2025 report counts 7,510 people tested in Spanish. The one clock difference PSI lists is Reading, which allows 80 minutes in Spanish and 65 in English for 50 questions. Confirm the language with your state page or test center before you book, because an Español link on a state page does not show that the test is offered in Spanish.
Can you take the HiSET in Spanish?
Yes, if your state offers it. PSI, which runs the HiSET, says "HiSET options vary by state" and lists English or Spanish among those options on its About the HiSET page (checked November 6, 2026). So the answer depends on where you plan to test.
These official sources show what is known, and where each one stops:
| Official source | What it shows | What it does not show |
|---|---|---|
| About the HiSET, checked November 6, 2026 | English or Spanish is one of the options that vary by state | Whether your state offers Spanish |
| Maine's state page, checked November 1, 2026 | Maine's HiSET is offered only in English | Anything about other states |
| 2024/2025 statistical report, checked November 6, 2026 | 7,510 people tested in Spanish and 69,751 in English; 4,239 of the Spanish group tested in California | Where Spanish is offered today |
| PSI flyer, copyright 2022 | "In most states, HiSET is offered in English and Spanish" | Which states; it is older, so treat it as background |
A translated web page is not proof either. The state pages for Tennessee, New Mexico, Minnesota and Montana have an Español link, but none of them says the test is offered in Spanish (checked November 6, 2026). That does not mean those states lack a Spanish test. It means the link is a website feature, not a statement about the exam.
To check your own state, open it in the HiSET state requirements directory and read its page for a line that names the test language. If the page says nothing, ask a test center or your state's office, using the questions at the end of this guide. The HiSET test center guide shows how to find one. If your state turns out not to offer the HiSET at all, the HiSET vs GED guide compares the official state lists.
What is different about the Spanish version?
The one clock difference in the two PSI documents we checked is Reading. The Test at a Glance brief (copyright 2025, checked November 3, 2026) and the statistical report both give Reading 50 questions, with 65 minutes in English and 80 in Spanish. No other subtest has a separate Spanish clock in those two documents.
| Subtest (Spanish term) | Questions | Listed time |
|---|---|---|
| Language Arts – Reading (lectura) | 50 | 65 minutes in English, 80 in Spanish |
| Language Arts – Writing (escritura) | 60 multiple choice plus an essay | 120 minutes |
| Mathematics (matemáticas) | 55 | 90 minutes |
| Science (ciencias) | 60 | 80 minutes |
| Social Studies (estudios sociales) | 60 | 70 minutes |
The Spanish words are plain translations, not PSI's official subtest titles.
The extra 15 minutes come to about 96 seconds per Reading question instead of 78, by our arithmetic (80 × 60 ÷ 50 and 65 × 60 ÷ 50). That 96-second pace applies to the live Spanish Reading subtest and to no other subtest. Practice forms follow their own printed time limits.
Added up, the five clocks come to 440 minutes with Reading in Spanish and 425 with Reading in English. That sum is test time, not appointment length: a computer tutorial of up to 15 minutes, for one, falls outside it. The guide to what is on the HiSET test covers each subtest and how scoring works.
We found no separate passing score for Spanish. PSI's scores page lists at least 8 out of 20 on each subtest, 2 out of 6 on the essay and 45 out of 100 in total (checked November 3, 2026), and the statistical report calculates its rates for both languages on the HiSET pass requirement. Your state can add its own requirements for the credential.
This section rests on the English brief. PSI also links a Spanish version of the brief, which we have not reviewed, so read it for anything specific to the Spanish forms.
Which official Spanish materials are free?
PSI says its free practice tests cover all five subtests in English and Spanish, and its HiSET Practice Tests page offers them as PDFs with directions and answer keys (checked November 3, 2026). Not every resource comes in Spanish, though:
| Resource | In Spanish? | Cost or route |
|---|---|---|
| Free practice tests (PDF) | Yes, all five subtests | Free on the HiSET Practice Tests page |
| Free computer practice | No, English only | Free |
| Paid practice tests | Yes | Paid |
| Official practice tests | Not stated in the pages we read | Through approved adult education or literacy programs, so ask the program |
The Test Taker Toolkit on About the HiSET also links Spanish versions of these documents (checked November 6, 2026):
- Test at a Glance brief
- Mathematics formula sheet
- Sample questions
- Writing response scoring guide
- Scored sample writing responses
- Practice test results chart ("Are You Ready")
We list them by title only and have not reviewed what is inside. PSI's preparation page also has a Spanish version.
Two cautions when you practice. Use the time limit printed on the Spanish PDF, because the limits in our practice-test readiness guide come from the English forms. Then look for your subject and exact form in PSI's Spanish chart. We have not opened that file, so do not apply a preparation level unless that exact form is listed. PSI says the preparation levels are indicators only (checked November 3, 2026).
Can you find HiSET classes or online prep in Spanish?
Possibly, but you have to ask. PSI recommends adult education and test preparation classes and says "In most states, these classes are free" (checked November 6, 2026). Ask each program whether it teaches in Spanish. The guide to HiSET classes and prep programs shows how to find one and what else to ask.
We did not verify which prep providers offer Spanish lessons, so confirm the language of any prep before you pay. That includes Passy: full HiSET prep planned for launch is organized by the five subtests, and this guide makes no claim that it will be in Spanish.
What do official results show for Spanish test takers?
In PSI's 2024/2025 report, 38.2% of the 3,351 people who completed all five subtests in Spanish passed on the first attempt, and 67.9% passed on their best attempt. The report covers July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025 (checked November 6, 2026):
| Measure | Completely in Spanish | Completely or partly in English |
|---|---|---|
| Completed all five subtests | 3,351 | 34,657 |
| Completion rate | 49.7% | 53.8% |
| Passed all five, first attempt | 38.2% (1,279) | 54.5% (18,878) |
| Passed all five, best attempt | 67.9% (2,276) | 79.8% (27,652) |
The report also gives first-attempt pass rates for each subtest taken in Spanish or in English. These are a separate set, not limited to completers or to people who took all five subtests in Spanish:
| Subtest | First-attempt pass rate, Spanish | First-attempt pass rate, English |
|---|---|---|
| Reading | 66.8% | 77.1% |
| Writing | 77.7% | 83.1% |
| Math (matemáticas) | 62.6% | 70.9% |
| Science | 76.1% | 87.3% |
| Social Studies (estudios sociales) | 80.3% | 85.7% |
Read these numbers with care:
- The report does not explain the gap. The groups also differ: the English completers include people who tested only partly in English, and 56% of the people tested in Spanish were in California, by our arithmetic. The gap is no judgment on the Spanish form or on you, and no rate predicts your own result.
- The "Passed all five" rows count completers only. A completer finished all five subtests. The completion rate is the share who did so among people tested that year who had not completed in an earlier year.
- A first miss is often not the end. About three in ten Spanish completers passed on a later attempt, by our arithmetic (997 of 3,351).
- Math had the lowest first-attempt rate in both languages. Social Studies had the highest in Spanish.
That makes Math a sensible place to start: take one free Spanish Math PDF under its printed time limit and see where you stand. For more practice afterward, the 1,150 questions planned for launch in full HiSET prep are one option, once you have checked their language.
The guide to how hard the HiSET is reads these rates in more depth. If you are looking for your own scores (resultados) rather than national figures, the HiSET score reports guide explains when they appear and how to read them.
Can you take some subtests in English and others in Spanish?
PSI's report suggests some people have, but we found no count in it, and that does not mean your state allows it. The report counts English completers as tested completely or partially in English, and counts a Spanish completer only if all five subtests were in Spanish. It does not say which states permit mixed sets or on what terms.
Ask your state office or test center before you plan around a mix. If your state does let you choose, here is an editorial tip, not a PSI rule: try a free official PDF in each language for that subject, and note which one lets you focus on the content rather than the wording. Keep in mind that the 80-minute clock is listed only for Reading in Spanish.
What should you confirm before you book?
Take these questions to your state office or test center. The list is Passy's editorial aid, not a PSI form.
| Question | Why ask |
|---|---|
| Is the HiSET offered in Spanish in my state and at this center? | Language is one of the options that vary by state |
| Which subtests can I take in Spanish, and on paper, on computer or at home? | Format also varies by state, and the pages we read do not tie it to language |
| Can I mix languages, or change language on a retake? | The report's categories allow for mixes, but do not give your state's rule |
| If my state requires an official practice test, is it available in Spanish? | Those tests come through approved programs, and we found no statement on their language |
| How is the language set on my appointment, and where can I see it? | You want to catch a mistake before test day |
Your next step is to open your state page today. Once the language is confirmed, follow the HiSET registration checklist, and if you are considering a remote session, read taking the HiSET at home first. These facts are current to the check dates shown, so recheck them close to booking, especially if your test date falls in 2027.
While you wait for an answer, Passy's 20 free HiSET practice questions and free HiSET study plan can help you organize the work. Open them and check that they suit the language you will test in.
For recall practice, full HiSET prep planned for launch includes 500 flashcards, once you have confirmed they come in the language you will study.
