HiSET Accommodations: Request Support Before Booking

How to request HiSET testing accommodations, prepare supporting documentation, and schedule through the accommodations team after approval.

Short answer

HiSET requires approval before you schedule a test with accommodations such as extended time, a separate room, or supervised extra breaks. Create a myHiSET account, use the online PSI accommodation request form linked from HiSET's accommodations page, and submit the required supporting documentation. Some listed supports need no prior approval at test centers; approved accommodations must be scheduled through the PSI accommodations team.

Which supports can you use without prior approval?

HiSET requires approval before scheduling accommodations such as extended time or a separate room, according to its official accommodations page. Some listed supports need no prior approval at test centers, so first check which process applies to what you need.

The center supports listed without prior approval include:

  • Transparent overlays.
  • Non-electronic earplugs.
  • An unmarked straightedge.
  • A handheld, non-electronic magnifier.
  • Cushions.
  • Service animals.

These examples come from the HiSET accommodations page, checked November 3, 2026. Treat the description carefully: an unmarked straightedge is different from bringing a tool with notes on it, and a handheld magnifier is different from requesting screen magnification. The latter is among the accommodations requiring approval.

This list concerns test centers. Do not assume it authorizes the same items for a test at home. If your item does not clearly match a listed support, ask the accommodations team to clarify before choosing an appointment.

If you are still choosing a test, use the HiSET and GED comparison to check the available paths. Then follow the chosen exam's own accommodation process rather than carrying a rule from one exam into the other.

Which accommodations require approval before booking?

HiSET lists extended time, a separate room, large print, screen magnification, a scribe, a talking calculator, and supervised extra breaks as examples requiring approval. The list describes possible accommodations; it does not establish what a particular candidate will receive.

Write down the adjustment you are requesting and the testing limitation it addresses. For example, if you are requesting extra breaks, describe that request directly rather than assuming it is included with extended time. Your submitted documentation should support the actual adjustment you need.

Before discussing the request with the authority providing your documentation, read the five HiSET subtests and their formats. That gives you a concrete way to describe where an access difficulty occurs, without trying to determine your own eligibility for approval.

You can continue content review while preparing a request. The full HiSET prep planned for launch is organized around the five subtests, so you can plan subject work alongside the separate steps needed to arrange your test.

What documentation should your request include?

HiSET's current instructions call for documentation from the diagnosing medical authority or learning institution. The documentation must describe the disability or testing limitations and the adjustment requested. It must also include the candidate's name and the authority's contact information, title, and original signature on letterhead.

Use this checklist when asking the authority to prepare the documentation:

  1. Identify the candidate. Check that the document includes your name and that it is consistent with your testing account.
  2. Describe the limitation. The documentation should explain the disability or testing limitations relevant to the request.
  3. Name the requested adjustment. Check that the document addresses the support you are asking PSI to approve.
  4. Identify the authority. Confirm that the required title and contact details are present.
  5. Check the document itself. Make sure it uses letterhead and carries the required original signature.

These are preparation checks drawn from HiSET's accommodations instructions, checked November 3, 2026. Read the current form before submitting, and follow any additional instructions it gives for your request. Do not assume that an existing document contains everything required just because it came from a school or medical office.

HiSET warns that incomplete documentation can delay or prevent approval. If something is missing, ask the issuing authority to correct it before you submit. Keep a copy of the final material so you can refer to exactly what you sent.

How do you submit and track the request?

Create your myHiSET account before seeking accommodation approval. Then use the online PSI request form linked from the official HiSET accommodations page. Requests cannot be submitted by phone.

A practical submission sequence is:

  1. Read the current request instructions and identify the support you need.
  2. Gather the supporting documentation and check it against the form.
  3. Submit the online request with the required material.
  4. Save a copy of what you submitted and any confirmation you receive.
  5. Monitor the email address you used and respond to any request for missing information.

The last two steps are organizational advice, not a promised tracking service or response schedule. The sources checked for this guide do not establish a guaranteed review turnaround. Allow room in your personal plans for questions or additional documentation, and avoid treating a preferred test date as confirmed while approval is unresolved.

Use the free HiSET study plan to keep subject preparation moving while the administrative steps are in progress. For additional review, full HiSET prep planned for launch includes 500 flashcards for recall practice. Neither a study plan nor a preparation purchase substitutes for an accommodation request.

How do you schedule after approval?

Your approval email explains how to schedule with accommodations. The HiSET Test Taker Bulletin requires approved accommodations to be scheduled through the PSI accommodations team. Follow that route instead of assuming an ordinary self-service appointment will include the approved adjustments.

Before accepting an appointment, compare the approval with the booking details:

  • Which subtest are you booking?
  • Which approved adjustments will be provided?
  • Does the appointment use the intended location and testing format?
  • What arrival, check-in, and paperwork instructions apply?

If something is unclear or does not match, resolve it through the accommodations team before relying on the appointment. Keep the approval email with the booking confirmation so both are available when you check the arrangements.

The HiSET registration guide covers the wider sequence of account setup and booking. For an accommodated appointment, approval and specialized scheduling remain part of that sequence; a completed account alone does not finish the process.

What should you confirm for your test location?

HiSET's test-day page says to bring approved accommodation paperwork. It also calls for acceptable identification, any required state pretest proof, and any applicable center fees. Check the confirmation for the subtest, date, start time, length, location, identification requirements, and cancellation rules.

For a center appointment, confirm the practical details before traveling. HiSET says lockers are not guaranteed, so ask the center about storing belongings if that affects your plans. Personal electronics, notes, food, and drink are restricted except where an approved accommodation applies; rely on the specific approval and center instructions for your arrangements.

For a remote appointment, use the instructions approved for that testing format. The center's no-prior-approval item list is not a remote-testing checklist. Read the HiSET test-at-home guide and resolve any conflict between general setup instructions and your approved arrangements with the accommodations team.

Your next step is to identify the exact support, check its approval requirements, and gather the right documentation before booking. While you work through that process, try the 20 free HiSET practice questions to identify subjects to review. For a larger pool of study material, full HiSET prep planned for launch includes 1,150 questions across the five subtests.
