Testing in 2027? How to Time Your MBLEx Application

The rules that will govern a 2027 MBLEx sitting unless FSMTB changes them: a six-month application, school verification, five business days to process, an authorization window FSMTB's FAQ puts at 120 days, and Pearson's change rules. With a worked 2027 timeline.

Short answer

Time your MBLEx application so that the Authorization to Test (ATT) window covers the date you want in 2027. As checked on October 25, 2026, FSMTB processes a complete application (the form, the $265 fee and your school's education verification) within five business days, its FAQ says the ATT is valid for 120 days, and an application that is never completed expires after six months. You then book with Pearson VUE, with no same-day appointments. FSMTB has announced no change to these rules for 2027.

The MBLEx date that matters is when your application is complete

If you want to sit the MBLEx in 2027, the key date is not the day you click submit but the day your application becomes complete. FSMTB starts processing only when it has all three parts: the application, the $265 fee and your school's education verification. The Authorization to Test (ATT) that follows gives you a fixed window to test. Apply too early and the window can close before you are ready. Apply too late and you are booking against the date you wanted, with no same-day appointments allowed.

MBLEx rules that apply to a 2027 test date

The Candidate Handbook effective September 17, 2026 is the edition in force as checked on October 25, 2026. It supersedes all earlier policies it addresses, and FSMTB has announced no new edition or rule change for 2027, so these are the rules a 2027 candidate should plan on:

StepRule as checked October 25, 2026Where FSMTB says it
EligibilityEnrolled with training in every outline subject area at an approved program, or graduated from one. The school verifies directly with FSMTBEducation Policy, handbook
ApplicationValid for six months from submission. If it is not complete by then, it expires and you apply and pay againHandbook
Education verificationYour school submits it through FSMTB's Education Verification Center (EVC). Documents you send yourself do not count unless FSMTB asksHandbook
ProcessingFive business days once the application is completeHandbook and FAQ
ATT windowTest within the date range on your ATT. The FAQ calls it a 120-day time frameFAQ and handbook
BookingWith Pearson VUE online or at 888.790.4892, using a Pearson account separate from your FSMTB account. No same-day appointments or walk-insHandbook
ChangesUp to 24 hours before the appointment. Pearson charges $50 to cancel or reschedule "within 60 days of your existing appointment"Handbook
Test dayArrive at least 30 minutes early. Late arrival counts as a no-show and the ATT expiresHandbook
ResultsThe state board on your application gets the official result within five business daysHandbook

Plan your study the same way, against a fixed date. Passy is building full prep for this exam, and you can see what full MBLEx prep is planned to include on the prep page. It is not available to buy yet.

Who must apply to the state before the MBLEx

FSMTB's process has you apply to FSMTB, pass the MBLEx, then apply to your state for a license. Two groups must start with the state instead, which adds time to a 2027 plan:

  • Apprenticeship. Before applying, confirm with your state board that it will accept your apprenticeship for licensing. Your mentor or sponsor sends your education records to FSMTB, and you must apply for licensure with the state first. FSMTB checks that the state has your licensing application before it approves you.
  • Education outside the United States. You need an independent equivalency evaluation, with all documents in English, and some states name the agency that must do it. Here too you apply to the state first, and FSMTB verifies it.

Two more cases affect timing. If you are still enrolled, the education policy lets your program verify enrollment plus training in all outline subject areas, but the handbook warns that some states require graduation before issuing a license. If your school has closed, you need its custodian of records, which FSMTB's FAQ says is usually found through your state's department of higher education, to email your transcript to schoolsupport@fsmtb.org. Start that search early.

A worked 2027 MBLEx timeline

This is a fictional example built on the rules above. Dana finishes her coursework in December 2026 and wants to test in late March 2027.

DateWhat happens
Monday, January 4, 2027Dana submits her application and the $265 fee
Friday, January 8, 2027Her school verifies her education through the EVC, so the application is complete
By Friday, January 15, 2027FSMTB processes it within five business days and emails her ATT
Monday, January 18, 2027She books Wednesday, March 24, 2027 with Pearson VUE and gets a confirmation email
Saturday, January 23, 2027From here on, she is within 60 days of her appointment, so a change would cost $50 under the handbook's wording
Wednesday, March 24, 2027Exam day. She arrives at least 30 minutes early with two IDs
By Wednesday, March 31, 2027Her state board receives the official result within five business days
Around May 15, 2027A 120-day window counted from January 15 would end here. Passy arithmetic: the real end date is the one printed on her ATT

Two things the example shows. First, Dana's March date sits well inside her ATT window. If something comes up and she knows at least 24 hours ahead, she can move the exam for the $50 change fee instead of losing her $265 application. Second, if she had applied in October 2026 and her school had verified her in mid-October, a 120-day window would have closed in February 2027 (Passy arithmetic again), before the date she wanted, and missing it would have meant reapplying.

Once you have a date, the free MBLEx study plan builds a schedule from your exam date and daily minutes. For a full-length rehearsal in the last weeks, the prep page lists the timed 100-question mock exam planned for MBLEx prep as coming at launch. The MBLEx cost guide adds up what a change or a retake would cost.

Booking and changing a 2027 MBLEx appointment

  • Your Candidate ID. Pearson VUE's FSMTB page says you need the Candidate ID from your ATT to create a Pearson account and book. Check that the name on the ATT matches your ID exactly before you book, and contact FSMTB first if it does not.
  • Confirmation. Pearson emails a confirmation right away. No email means the booking may have failed, so call Pearson.
  • Changes. A phone change needs a live Pearson representative, not a voicemail. After a change, a confirmation arrives within 24 hours.
  • Missed appointments. If you do not show up for any reason, the ATT expires and you reapply at the fee in effect then.
  • Accommodations. Request them in the application. The ADA Supplement is effective August 2026, approved accommodations cost nothing extra, and test center staff cannot approve them on exam day.

ID rules for a 2027 MBLEx appointment

The September 2026 handbook sets the ID rules that would apply to a 2027 appointment:

  • Two IDs. One primary and one secondary, with first and last names matching your application and ATT exactly. A middle name or initial is not required.
  • Primary ID. An original, physical, valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license, state ID or passport. If it has a signature line, it must be signed.
  • Temporary credentials. A temporary, limited or learner's credential counts only if it is an original physical photo ID card. Paper temporary documents, photocopies and photos of IDs are not accepted.
  • Digital IDs. Not accepted as standard practice. Pearson may accept one only where local law requires it.
  • Secondary ID. Original, valid and unexpired, with your name and signature, such as a signed Social Security card or a signed bank card.

FSMTB's FAQ page still carries older ID wording, including a line that temporary licenses are not acceptable. The FAQ itself says the handbook supersedes it, so follow the handbook and email mblex@fsmtb.org if your ID is borderline.

After a 2027 MBLEx: results and the state license

If you pass, a message appears on screen. If you fail, the test center gives you a diagnostic report by content area, which the MBLEx passing score guide explains. Either way, FSMTB sends the official result to your state board within five business days. Passing lets you apply for a license, but you may not practice or advertise as licensed until the state notifies you.

The MBLEx 2027 changes guide tracks what FSMTB has and has not announced for the exam itself. When you set your date, compare the access periods planned for MBLEx prep, 30, 90 or 180 days with a one-time payment, against your ATT window. Checkout is not open yet, so no payment can be taken today.
