MBLEx 2027: What FSMTB Has Confirmed and What Is Still Unknown

As of October 25, 2026, FSMTB has announced no new MBLEx content outline, format, fee or delivery change for 2027. Here is the version a 2027 candidate tests on, the dates behind it, the Job Task Analysis cycle, and what would signal a change.

Short answer

As checked on October 25, 2026, FSMTB has announced no new content outline, Job Task Analysis, format, fee or delivery change for 2027. Unless it announces one, a candidate testing in 2027 takes the 100-question MBLEx on the current content outline (© FSMTB 2023, built from the 2022 Job Task Analysis), under the Candidate Handbook effective September 17, 2026, for the $265 application fee. FSMTB says it runs a Job Task Analysis every five to seven years, but it has not dated the next one or any outline that would follow.

No MBLEx change is announced for 2027

Nothing about the MBLEx is scheduled to change in 2027, as far as FSMTB has said publicly. On October 25, 2026, FSMTB's Exam Content page, Candidate Handbook, FAQ and News & Events page announced no new content outline, Job Task Analysis (JTA), question format, fee or delivery method. If that holds, a 2027 candidate takes the same exam as a 2026 candidate: 100 multiple-choice questions on the © 2023 outline, in 110 minutes, at a Pearson VUE test center.

This page separates what FSMTB has confirmed from what it has not said, so that a plan for 2027 rests only on the first.

Dates behind the current MBLEx outline

FSMTB has dated the steps that led to the current outline, but not its start or end as the exam blueprint. Kept apart, the dates look like this:

StepDateSource
2022 JTA survey openFebruary 22 to July 31, 2022, with 5,440 responses2022 JTA Report
2022 JTA reportDated February 20232022 JTA Report

Retirement of the © 2023 outlineNot announcedNone

The handbook says the JTA is the first stage of exam development and that the content outline is created from the survey results. Question writing against that outline is ongoing.

Will a new MBLEx Job Task Analysis start in 2027?

FSMTB has not said. What it has said is the cadence: the Exam Content page calls a formal JTA "every five to seven years" a fundamental requirement for best practice in testing, and the handbook says FSMTB conducts the survey on that cycle. The 2022 report describes earlier surveys in 2012 and 2017, after the first one developed in 2006, and the 2017 report says that survey ran from July 7 to August 18, 2017.

Counting five to seven years from 2022 gives 2027 to 2029. That is Passy arithmetic, not an FSMTB date.

Even a JTA survey opening in 2027 would not by itself change a 2027 exam. In the last cycle, the survey closed on July 31, 2022, the report is dated February 2023, and the outline carries a 2023 copyright. Every applicant also acknowledges reviewing the content outline when submitting an application, which suggests a new outline would be posted before it applied. FSMTB has not said how much notice it would give.

What is still unknown about the MBLEx in 2027

  • The next JTA. No survey date is announced.
  • Any new outline. Whether content areas or weights would change after the next JTA is unknown, and no effective date exists for an outline that has not been published.
  • The 2027 fee. No change is announced. The handbook says each application pays the fee in effect when it is submitted, so the fee you pay is the one listed on the day you apply.
  • A new handbook edition. The current handbook says it supersedes all earlier policies it addresses, and that FSMTB may modify its other policies at any time, with or without notice. The edition in effect when you apply and test is the one that counts.
  • Spanish-language materials. The Spanish Manual del candidato linked from FSMTB's Requirements & Process page is the edition in effect from July 2023, older than the English handbook of September 17, 2026. If the two differ on a rule that affects you, ask FSMTB at mblex@fsmtb.org which one applies.

Licensure rules are a separate track. FSMTB's Regulated States table notes that some states are in the process of increasing education hours, and those decisions belong to each state board, not to the MBLEx.

None of these unknowns changes what to study today. Full prep is being built on the same seven content areas, so you can check what full MBLEx prep will cover at launch, and the free tools already use them.

How to check for MBLEx changes before a 2027 exam

  1. Exam Content page. A new outline or JTA report would appear on fsmtb.org/exam-content, which today lists the 2022 JTA and the current outline.
  2. The handbook's cover date. The current English handbook reads "Effective September 17, 2026." A new date means a new edition to read before you apply.
  3. News & Events. FSMTB posts exam announcements there. The most recent MBLEx item on October 25, 2026 was the August 1, 2024 start of on-screen pass messages.
  4. Your ATT and Pearson confirmation. These carry your own test window and appointment details.
  5. Your state board. Education hours, language rules and attempt limits come from the state.

Preparing in 2027 against the current MBLEx outline

Some study products are marketed as "2026–2027" or "2027" editions. FSMTB has announced no new content for 2027, so a new edition label tells you nothing about the exam. What matters is that the material follows the seven content areas and their weights.

The MBLEx study guide by content area turns the current outline into a weekly split, and the MBLEx 2027 application timeline covers when to apply. The free MBLEx study plan and 20 free practice questions are built on the © 2023 outline.
