NBRC Exam Day: Identification, Calculator Rules, Breaks, and Results
What to bring to an NBRC test center, how the calculator and break rules work, and when to expect your result and score report.
Short answer
Bring two current forms of identification with your name and signature, including one with a photograph, as required by the NBRC Candidate Handbook. Personal calculators are prohibited, but the examination software provides an on-screen calculator. Breaks use examination time, and arriving more than 15 minutes late prevents admission. NBRC says your pass/fail result appears on screen after you finish and your score report is emailed within 24 hours.
Which two IDs do I need?
For NBRC exam day, bring two current forms of identification with your name and signature, including one with a photograph, according to the NBRC Candidate Handbook. Temporary identification is not acceptable, so check the actual documents you intend to bring before the morning of your appointment.
The handbook lists a driver's license, state identification card, passport, and military identification among the accepted photo-ID examples. Having one of these does not remove the requirement for a second acceptable ID.
Use this check before packing:
- Select both IDs. Do not stop after finding a photo ID.
- Check that each is current and has your name and signature. Confirm that at least one has your photograph.
- Set aside temporary documents. Do not assume a temporary replacement will satisfy the rule.
- Compare your documents with your appointment details. If a name or document raises a question, resolve it with NBRC or PSI before traveling.
These rules come from the handbook revision dated September 3, 2026, checked November 3, 2026. Recheck the current handbook and your appointment instructions before testing, particularly if your appointment is several months away.
What should I do before arriving at the test center?
Confirm the test-center address, appointment date, start time, and examination name from your booking information. Then plan the journey with enough room for traffic, parking, and finding the entrance. An early-arrival buffer is practical advice here, not a stated NBRC check-in requirement.
The official late-arrival rule is consequential: the handbook says that arriving more than 15 minutes late prevents admission. It also says that missing an appointment forfeits the examination fee. Treat the appointment time as the time you must be ready for check-in; do not build a travel plan around the late-arrival threshold.
If you need to change an appointment, follow the instructions in your authorization and contact PSI. Do not assume a cancellation or rescheduling deadline from another examination applies to NBRC. Check the applicable deadline and any charge before making the change.
For RT candidates, NBRC lists the first administration as January 4, 2027, checked November 3, 2026. Make sure your rehearsal matches the examination on your authorization. The existing guide to TMC content and the replacement RT examination explains the format distinction.
Keep your final review manageable. For short recall sessions before your appointment, 500 flashcards are planned for launch as part of full NBRC RT Exam (TMC) prep. Choose a few topics you have already studied instead of treating the trip to the center as another full study session.
What may I bring into the testing room?
Separate what you need for check-in from what you can use while answering questions. The handbook prohibits personal electronics and personal calculators. Do not plan to use your phone as a calculator or bring a familiar handheld model into the examination room.
A simple packing routine helps:
- Pack for check-in: your two acceptable IDs and the appointment information you need to locate the center.
- Minimize personal belongings: bring only what you need for the journey and follow staff instructions about where belongings must go.
- Use the supplied materials: the center provides pencils and scratch paper; the examination software provides the calculator.
- Resolve unusual needs beforehand: if you need an item or arrangement that is not clearly covered by your instructions, ask before exam day rather than assuming it will be permitted.
This is a preparation checklist, not a promise that every test center offers a particular storage arrangement. Read the instructions supplied for your own appointment and ask staff before taking an item into the room.
Can I use a calculator, scratch paper, or a break?
Yes, the examination software has an on-screen calculator. That permission does not extend to a personal calculator. Practicing only with a handheld calculator can leave you unfamiliar with the tool you will actually use, so include the official software tutorial in your preparation.
The center supplies pencils and one sheet of scratch paper at a time. Return the scratch paper; do not treat it as notes you can take home. Ask staff for instructions if you need another sheet during testing.
Breaks consume examination time. For the RT examination, NBRC lists 185 multiple-choice items and four hours, checked November 3, 2026. Of those items, 160 are scored and 25 are pretest items. Plan your pace around all 185 presented items.
As an editorial pacing reference, 240 minutes divided by 185 items is about 78 seconds per item. This is an average, not an official limit for any question. A break comes out of the same four-hour allowance, so that average does not provide separate break time or a guaranteed review period.
Rehearse your own pacing before test day. A 185-question mock examination is planned for launch as part of full NBRC RT Exam (TMC) prep, matching the published RT item count. When using a practice set, track elapsed time and notice whether calculations, rereading, or long pauses slow you down.
How should I use the tutorial and question navigation?
The NBRC handbook says tutorial time is separate from examination time. Use it to understand the controls before starting. The handbook also permits changing and bookmarking multiple-choice responses and states that there is no penalty for guessing.
A practical routine is to identify what the question asks, select your best response, and bookmark an uncertain item if you want to return to it. Before finishing, review unfinished or bookmarked work as your remaining time allows. This is an editorial workflow; it does not guarantee that you will have time to revisit every question.
Try the 20 free NBRC RT Exam (TMC) practice questions to notice where your answering process becomes slow. Use NBRC's own practice resources for familiarity with its examination interface, rather than assuming another practice page reproduces the test software.
If you have time for more question practice, 1,100 questions are planned for launch as part of full NBRC RT Exam (TMC) prep. Focus each session on a specific problem you observed, such as overlooking the requested task or spending too long on an uncertain response.
Put a rehearsal and a brief final review into the free NBRC RT Exam (TMC) study plan. Keep the last preparation step concrete: know your IDs, route, software controls, and timing plan.
When will my result and score report arrive?
NBRC's Resources and FAQs page says your pass/fail result appears on screen after you finish. The score report is emailed within 24 hours, under the process checked November 3, 2026. The screen result and the emailed report are separate steps, so do not expect the email necessarily to arrive before you leave the center.
If the report has not arrived within that period, NBRC directs candidates to PSI at 833.256.1424 or examschedule@psionline.com. Check your email folders and use that contact route to resolve a missing report.
Read the report against the examination you actually took. For the meaning of the credential thresholds and the legacy TMC pathway, use the existing guide to NBRC low and high cut scores. Avoid translating a practice percentage into an assumed official result.
Before your appointment, finish the practical checklist: two acceptable IDs, confirmed location and time, a plan for personal belongings, and familiarity with the supplied tools. Afterward, save the report when it arrives and use the official result to decide your next step.
